The Cornish Legacy: Love never dies... (Barbara Whitnell Cornish Novels) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 49 ratings

A heartwarming historical saga set on the Cornish coast! Perfect for fans of Rosamunde Pilcher, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Liz Fenwick and Kate Morton.

As Clare travels into her great-aunt’s past, can she find the key to her own future?

Independent and ambitious,
Clare Chandler is a true Nineties woman. But now she’s thirty-six, her glittering career in banking – and her single and carefree lifestyle – are beginning to lose their shine.

Heartbroken by the death of her free-spirited great-aunt
Verity Ashland, Clare puts her life on hold and travels back to Lemorrick, the lovely old house in Cornwall where she grew up, to settle Verity’s affairs.

Soon Clare is lulled back into the easy rhythms of Lemorrick and the sea, and the stress of her London life begins to melt away.

And when she unexpectedly runs into her old flame
Nick Courtfield, Clare realises that time hasn’t altered her feelings for him.

When Clare finds Verity’s diaries – and uncovers the heartbreaking secret her great-aunt took to her grave – her antipathy towards Nick’s family finally becomes clear.

But the most shocking twist in the tale has yet to reveal itself …

When Nick learns the truth, will their rekindled romance stand a chance? Or are some sins too terrible to ever be forgiven?

Can Clare find a way to right the wrongs of the past and find her own destiny at the same time?

THE CORNISH LEGACY is a compelling dual timeline family saga of simmering passions, secret heartbreak, and enduring love set between the 1990s and the Second World War.

Whitnell adroitly intermingles historical events and romance’Booklist

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Clare Ashland, a successful London businesswoman, receives word that the woman who raised her, Great-Aunt Verity, has died. Clare returns to her aunt's family residence in Cornwall to bury her, only to find that her old flame, Nick Courtfield, is in town and recently divorced. She also notices that the members of this seaside community are deeply wary of Nick. When Clare attempts to find out the reasons behind their distrust, it becomes clear that her aunt Verity is somehow involved. Her aunt's diaries are found, and Clare and the reader are quickly swept up into Verity's fascinating life, at least from 1913 to 1944, when the diaries mysteriously end. So compelling a read is this section that when the final chapters deliver the reader back into the present day, the effect is quite disconcerting. Whether or not Clare can clear the Courtfield name becomes of secondary importance as Aunt Verity steals the show. Maria Hatton

I loved the setting of the house at the sea's edge in Cornwall. The author made it easy to imagine myself there. The family drama that evolved was original, and in the end, satisfying. The characters were many sided and realistic. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Clare a success in London, rushes to an aunt in Cornish. Staying on, she finds a peace, and also secrets that had been keep. A good story of a woman finding what she had been longing for, and maybe an old love, also.

Considering that the story took place in two different lifetimes, I liked the older tale better. The human emotions expressed here were remarkable reading.

Pleased to find another of Rosamunde Pilcher's book shelf authors that fulfill my expectations of a colorful saga from Endgland. I enjoyed the story from beginnig to the end. It was so easy to picture the country side and smell the sea while reading.

Set in lush, fairy tale land of Arthurian legend, Whitnell's book, The Cornish Legacy, seems to have forgotten the rule of authors - having her readers care about her characters.
I don't mind a predictable plot if the author makes me feel the main character's feelings. I kept hoping for the Whitnell of A Charmed Circle, and A Clear Blue Sky. Not until the last 1/8 of the book did she finally appear, but by then I didn't care.
This book was a disappointment. Skip this and read her older works if you want Whitnell at her best.

I enjoyed the book. A bit similar to another of her's, but once again the characters are well defined, there's humor in the narrative, and I found it hard to put down.

Claire inherits a house in Cornwall and also finds secrets. I just couldn't get into this story and thought the diaries detracted from the main story.
