Crewel Work (The Tapestry Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.7 3.7 out of 5 stars 60 ratings

The key to a successful horse farm is the trainer. At Bridgeton Pass, J. P. Ryan is that key. William Becker is determined to protect his farm and keep Ryan on the job.
That goal is threatened by two things – a sinister act by another employee and the fact that his only daughter has fallen head-over-heels in love with J. P.
Becker can’t allow either of those things to threaten his legacy.
Audra grew up around the handsome trainer and fell in love with him at a distance, enchanted by his kindness and honesty. When they began stealing private but innocent moments, she found that she didn’t want to live without him. Audra is heartbroken when she has to choose between honoring her father and pursuing love.
J.P. wants Audra by his side, but he finds himself with a hard decision.
He is forced to choose between his career and the love of his life. Between the problem caused by the troublemaking barn hand and the frustration caused by his desire for Audra, J.P.’s job has become a ‘crewel’ work.
The story of the Becker family is woven as an intricate Tapestry. It is beautiful as a whole, but like any tapestry, you have to turn it over and look at the back side to see how the threads of love and family relationships are woven together into one intricate whole.
Welcome to the Tapestry series.

Five Star Review Reviewed by Tracy A. Fischer for Readers' Favorite

When twelve-year-old Audra Becker first sets eyes on hunky horse trainer J.P. Ryan, it's definitely love at first sight. The gorgeous cowboy works with his shirt off, and he's great with horses to boot. But he's five years older than her, and employed by her father, so she knows she doesn't have a chance with him. So starts the intriguing relationship between Audra and J.P. in Crewel Work, the first book in The Tapestry Series by author Natalie Alder. But when Audra grows up and develops into a stunning sixteen-year-old, she realizes that the thing she's desired for so long, a relationship with J.P. just might be within her grasp. And when he kisses her on her birthday, it seems possible that both of their dreams might come true.

In a sweet, fun and very romantic tale, author Natalie Alder has done a fantastic job in writing a book that will keep you turning the pages from the start all the way to the finish. Audra's crush on J.P. is one that almost any woman can relate to, and the realization of that crush is what most people have daydreamed about at one time or another. Author Alder's characters are ones that the reader will definitely relate to, and will think about long after they've finished the book. If that isn't the hallmark of a great author, I don't know what is. Crewel Work is a book that would appeal to any reader who loves romance, a fun and sweet story, or just a good work of fiction. I am pleased to recommend this book, and can't wait to read the next in this very promising series by Natalie Alder.

About the Author

I write stories about romance. They center on learning about the characters backgrounds, personalities and life circumstances that mold them into who they are and how they love. I am a sassy 40-something year old. I live in a quiet farming town in New England with my husband of fifteen years and our three rescued cats. After college I facilitated improvement in the physical abilities of children and the elderly then took the opportunity to enjoy my creative side. I love to sew, knit, write...sing and drink martinis (not necessarily at the same time).

I am not usually a reader of romance novels (Natalie is a good friend and I wanted to read her first book) but I have to say this story has so much more to offer than mere titillation. It has a very entertaining and complex plot with well developed characters you grow to care about. The book is very well written and professionally edited and was a great read. She did an awesome job and I hope you give her and her Tapestry Series the chance they deserve.

The premise was nice enough, but the story as a whole didn't work for me. Much of the dialogue was unbelievable; more likely to be internal commentary or narrative than real life conversation. One thing that really bugged me was the event at the fair. For her to be upset that her crush comes to her rescue made no sense to me. Add in my personal bias against crass language and you get a book I'm glad to be done with.

Is there anything like your first love? Young love that last through time that grows from a crush into friendship with love and respect for each other. This story brought back a few fond memories and gave me a few smiles as I took my own walk down memory lane. I felt the author gives a great plot with some wonderful characters. You first love can be so painful when the odds are stacked against you with a very protective father who really only wants what is best for you.

J.P maybe a young man in his early 20’s but he is more adult for his years in giving a 16 year old time to grow up. He was very patient even when he really wanted to give in to his wants and needs. He knew how to show respect to women and to her father. I felt like he really cared for her and didn’t care about what her father had, yes he was concerned about his job but I never felt like it was more important. I felt he wanted to do what was best for Audra when most men his age would have taken what they wanted while being sneaky.

Audra was a sweetie young girl who fell for the trainer who broke her heart. She wanted to be an adult but still had those little girl feelings. She is your normal everyday girl who gets confused about how emotions get mixed up with adult feelings. I thought she was cute and enjoyed watching her grow up to be an outstanding woman.

Her father and brothers were a delight one being over protective why the others gave her the support that she needed. The author gave you a few twists and turns. I thought it was a great read however I did feel at time a little too much information was given and at other times not enough. For me the ending was cut off I would have liked to have known a few things one being what happen to Eddie the other seeing a little more about their future. However since this is a series we might find the answers as we go along. I give this a 3.75 rounding it up to a 4.

This is the first time I have read anything by this author it was a story I did enjoy with great characters. I do not usually read books about characters at such young ages. At times I did find my mind wondering but the author did bring me back. I thought the author did a great job with the plot and found the story could have happen in real life. If you like a story about very young first love than give this author a try you might just fall in love with her writing style and find a new favorite author.

Massachusetts author, Natalie Alder, must have secret dreams to be the designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox as she absolutely knocks it out of the ballpark with her debut novel Crewel Work in The Tapestry Series. Set against the background of the Bridgeton Pass horse farm in Carnegie, South Carolina, Audra Becker and the farm's horse trainer J.P. Ryan are drawn to each other in a story of forbidden love. Audra is not allowed to date the farm's employees and J.P. doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize his career. It's a story of strong-willed characters, close family bonds, forbidden love, and a character named Eddie Fisher that is such a jerk in his attitude toward Audra and his determination to hurt and destroy those at Bridgeton Pass; I literally wanted to reach into the pages of the book and jerk a knot in his tail. Natalie Alder keeps you turning the pages in an emotional roller-coaster ride. It's one of those rare books where you feel the pain for the characters, and rejoice in their happiness when good things happen. The characters are believable, and the dialogue is riveting. I have already bought the second book in the series, Trouble Looming, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for the Becker Family.

This book was pretty good, but some of it didn't flow as well as I would've liked. J.P. kept trying to do the right thing, but some things you can't fight. I think the father was doing too much to intervene and Audra was doing her best to be with J.P. even though it was risking his job.

It may be a good book, I just couldn't get into it. I'm not saying it was the author, only that it wasn't a book for me. I didn't make it past the first chapter.
