Monkey Magic: The Curse of Mukada Kindle Edition
The animal world is in peril. Can 11-year-old Romy Alexander use her mysterious power to save the day?
"A beautifully written tale of good vs evil that will inspire its readers to join the fight to save the orangutan and help save the earth, too." NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC KIDS
On a trip of a lifetime with her scientist dad to the lush rainforests of Borneo, Romy awakens on a steamy night to discover a secret about herself — and to learn that she alone can help break a curse that has brought misery to generations of orangutans.
"Cleverly woven with delicious subplots. A real page-turner." KIDS' BOOK REVIEW
Nominated for the Hedwig Anuar children's book of the year award, The Curse of Mukada has been enjoyed in classrooms and homes around the world prior to its release in Europe and the U.S. in 2021. The Monkey Magic series both entertains kids and informs about the plight of endangered species.
Children love the book because it's thrilling, fun and they have a close affinity to the natural world; teachers love it because it helps to explain conservation, rainforests and how humans impact the planet.
"A fantastic novel!" THE MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW
"A super book! Please buy it, treasure it in your library and share its message." DAVID BELLAMY, late TV presenter and conservationist
In part II of the series — The Great Wall Mystery — Romy embarks on another captivating adventure when dozens of South American monkeys are found stranded on China's most famous landmark. Part III follows the London girl to America in The Ghostly Thieves of New York for another page-turner-with-a-message that begins with a series of ghoulish break-ins at Manhattan's famous galleries and museums.
“My son loved this book and is even more inspired to become a Wildlife Warrior!” TERRI IRWIN, naturalist
“A wonderful, magical story. I’m sure children will both benefit from it and love it.” ZAC GOLDSMITH, environmentalist
“A gripping adventure with an important message.” JEREMY STRONG, bestselling author
“This delightful, magical tale shows us how greed can harm wildlife, and why we need to take immediate action to try to stop it. I highly recommend this enjoyable story with a great environmental message.”
ALICE BERGER, Bergers Reviews
"I’ve always loved an engaging story that also teaches – parents, teachers and librarians will be similarly enthralled, for this very reason – but I’m also happy to say that kids won’t become bogged down in a plot full of preaching. The messages are well done, the plot is well-crafted and the storyline is full of enough action, adventure, magic, baddies and goodies to make it a real page-turner.” KIDS' BOOK REVIEW
"Highly recommended as a story telling resource for primary aged children - one which takes them on an adventure to the jungles of Borneo to meet the orangutans and also one that inspires thought regarding the current conservation issues of illegal logging in Indonesia and protection of the jungles and the orangutans natural habitat." JULIE NEWNHAM, Australian author and teacher

About the author

Grant is the author of the Monkey Magic series of Romy Alexander adventures, and more.
He is a British journalist and children's author who has reported on Olympic Games and World Cups and whose assignments have taken him to far-flung places from North Korea to Clapham North. He now lives in London with his family and is represented by the British agent Catherine Pellegrino at Marjacq. His website is grantsclark.com.
Children and teachers have enjoyed the Monkey Magic series the world over for years - many schools have included it in their curriculum because not only do the books entertain but they educate.
Now, in 2021, the series has been released in the U.S. and Britain.
Monkey Magic: The Curse of Mukada was Grant's first novel, a page-turner of a book that has as its backdrop the heart-breaking destruction of the rainforests and the plight of the orangutan. Part of the royalties has gone to orangutan charities.
The second part of the Monkey Magic series - The Great Wall Mystery - unfolds on China's most famous monument and centres on the illegal trade in endangered species. The third book takes Romy Alexander to America in Monkey Magic: The Ghostly Thieves of New York. Most people who read the books agree: the series gets better with every book.
The novels have received critical acclaim - the first was a nominee for the Hedwig Anuar children's book of the year - and have been published globally by the likes of Hachette and Monsoon Books.
Grant has many other writing projects, including picture books that include humorous verse - Uncle Bill's Missing Tooth was released in the summer of 2021. Ahead of its release, his latest novel for middle grade readers (Horse and Ox) has been described by Harry Potter publisher Barry Cunningham as "truly special."
Further praise for Grant's books:
“Cleverly woven with delicious subplots, Monkey Magic is also strewn with environmental references and information that are played upon in a subtle but vital way. I’ve always loved an engaging story that also teaches – parents, teachers and librarians will be similarly enthralled, for this very reason – but I’m also happy to say that kids won’t become bogged down in a plot full of preaching. The messages are well done, the plot is well-crafted and the storyline is full of enough action, adventure, magic, baddies and goodies to make it a real page-turner.”

- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEleven year old Romy gets to go to Borneo with her father to help the Orangutans. But someone who is supposed to be an ally is an enemy. The Orangutans help save Romy and her father, and catch the bad guy.
There are supernatural aspects to this story that make it fun and exciting. But the Orangutans have lost a great deal of habitat, along with many endangered species. Only Human Beings can make the changes that will either save the planet, or destroy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2021Loved this book! Happily coincided with an orangutan conservation drive at my daughter's school. Not only was it a brilliant read but fueled her passions around wildlife conservation. Perfect for any child thirsty for animal stories, travel and adventure and any parent wanting to raise their child with some awareness of endangered species and a world soon to be in their care.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2010Orangutans of the Mukada Nature Reserve are getting sick and heading to the coast. But what's causing this unusual phenomenon? Is it overpopulation, as suggested by the park warden? Romy and her scientist father plan a visit to investigate, since something doesn't feel quite right.
Soon after their arrival, Romy hears of the curse of Mukada - and she also discovers Monkey Magic. This magic helps her to communicate with the orangutans, with surprising results. Armed with new information, she and her father are able to solve the mystery and save the orangutans.
Monkey Magic also provides facts about orangutans, and how their habitats are being threatened by human encroachment. This delightful, magical tale shows us how greed can harm wildlife, and why we need to take immediate action to try to stop it. I highly recommend this enjoyable story with a great environmental message.
