Death at the Duck Pond: A British Female Amateur Sleuth Mystery (The Finch & Fischer Mysteries Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 842 ratings

A New Year and a New Case for mobile librarian Penny Finch and her rescue dog Fischer.

When a much loved pillar of the community is found dead in the duck pond early one morning, the village residents are left reeling with shock.

Initially deemed a tragic accident it’s not until Penny receives a letter from the victim, dated one week before the death, that she begins to suspect a different motive.

But with no clues to work with, and the polite but dismissive attitudes from her friend and the police inspector, she eventually admits to letting her imagination run away with her.

Then a piece of evidence is found, potentially linking the crime to an incident fifty years in the past and Penny has to resort to subterfuge to bring the suspect into the open.

But will she manage to crack the case before they disappear forever?

Death at the Duck Pond is book 2 in the British cozy mystery series featuring mobile librarian Penny Finch and her rescue pup Fischer. Follow as they sniff out clues and dig up red herrings in the six villages and hamlets that make up Hampsworthy Downs.

I had such a good time with this book. A great whoddunit (I thought I'd figured it out and got it completely wrong!), a lovable set of characters (other than Edward!), and of course Fischer! I completely fell in love with Fischer the dog. And J New does such a great job of capturing that wonderful and quaint feel of a British rural village. Reading about this place and these people felt like coming home!

You really can't go wrong with this book. I read it out of sequence, as my first intro to the series, and it worked perfectly - so grab whichever book in the series tickles your fancy, you won't regret it!

    J. New writes such delightful books! I’ve read everything of hers I can find and loved them all. Please write more! Finch and Fischer are both (dog and human) are wonderfully fleshed out just as if they were sitting right there including you in the conversations also. Fischer is an adorable dog...makes me want one just like him. I truly enjoyed all her books and think you will too.

I really liked this story and read it up in about a couple of three days. The love of the owner, Penny, for the dog Fischer was obvious. There was a good pacing to this story. Enough events occurring including events in Penny's personal life that just made the story flow. The characters were believable, there was a bit of romance, and a great village setting. I hope there are a lot more books to come!

I wasn't familiar with this author's work and stumbled across it when looking for something else. I'm glad I did. The characters are endearing, especially the little four legged hero. It's nice to find a true old fashioned cosy.

Death at the Duck Pond, a most entertaining, quick cozy. Penny Finch, along with her family friends, and interesting love life, manages to solve just good old fashion mysteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful mystery series
Reviewed in Australia on May 29, 2019
I love this series already, the characters are great, very detailed and three dimensional. A series that invoked the very idea of a cosy mystery. The stories bring comfort and are intriguing at the same time. Absolutely perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable cosy mystery read...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 7, 2023
The second in this new series of cosy mysteries sees Penny lose one of her favourite customers at her mobile library. She suspects there may have been foul play involved, but she can't find anyone to take her seriously.

Meanwhile, her relationship with Edward seems to be going nowhere, is it time to call it a day.

Fischer continues to delight in this series, a cheeky puppy who is very intuitive!

Whilst each book is a standalone mystery, the books are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and wider storyline.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an interesting, somewhat low-key mystery series
Reviewed in Canada on May 24, 2019
I enjoyed the first book in the series and this second one was quite satisfying, too, though it takes Penny almost the whole book to convince the DI that the old lady's death wasn't accidental. So, not fast-paced or high tension, just life in a quiet English village with a whodunit and a hint of romance thrown in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable read

Love these books, they take me back to a time where people knew all their neighbours.
Easy books to read but interesting with twists and turns to keep you guessing, I was completely wrong about the murderer.
Once you start you have to finish the book.
I would recommend to Agatha Christie
