Don't Cry for Me: A Lesbian Romance (Midnight in Manhattan Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,243 ratings

A frosty television host, a bubbly bar owner, and a litter of abandoned kittens. The recipe for ratings gold…or heartbreak?

Eve Marlow has her eyes on the prize: a third season of her popular business makeover show,
Do Over. But when her ratings take an unexpected dive, Eve needs a blockbuster new client, or she can kiss season three goodbye. She has her work cut out for her, and that’s before she discovers a litter of newborn kittens in a trash can. Now she’s desperate to find someone to take them so she can concentrate on reviving her career.

Josie Swanson had to put her kitten rescue on the back burner when she inherited her father’s bar two years ago. Since then, she’s invested all her time and energy into keeping it afloat, but despite her best efforts, Swanson’s is going under. When she gets a phone call from Eve Marlow, host of the television show Josie applied to earlier that year, the woman she’s convinced can save her bar, Josie hopes her luck has finally turned.

Eve knows what she needs to succeed, and it isn’t Josie—or her bar. There’s no denying the chemistry sizzling between them, though. Josie’s personality is as vibrant as her turquoise-tipped hair. She stirs things in Eve that haven’t been stirred in a long time, but there’s a reason she keeps her heart under lock and key. Eve stands to lose a lot more than her TV show if she lets her guard down, no matter how tempted she is to see if Josie’s love would be worth the risk.

I don’t know what it is with Rachel Lacey’s books that somehow seem to hook my emotions and then drag them along for the ride. I thoroughly enjoyed the pacing of this story and Eve’s pain resonated deeply with me even though I’ve never experienced the same. I fell in love with Eve, her icy exterior and marshmallow insides made me swoon. I also wish I had Josie’s hair game, I was jealous AF practically all the time. Fantastic story, highly recommend it.

It took me a while to get through this book, because I was so anxious about the pain Eve's character had been through, but it was well worth the effort after picking it up and putting it down several times.

The characters are well developed and their chemistry leaps off the page. The opposites attract thing they have going on is well-balanced with enough common ground, and all of it feels both natural and engaging.

I liked that the author allowed all of her characters to operate with empathy even in the midst of conflict rather than cranking up drama unnecessarily.

There's enough supporting character development to tee up the rest of the series, and now that I'm through this one, I'm looking forward to picking up the next book.

I have been reading a lot of just so-so books recently. I wasn't sure if it was because of the quality of books or if maybe my head has been in a funny space as a result of quarantine during this pandemic.

After reading this, I have to assume it was the books I was reading. Because this one had me hooked and invested. It was one of those where it is really inconvenient when you have to do things like sleep, eat, or log into work.

Eve owns her own marketing company and also has a television show that focuses on saving businesses from going under. She learns that her ratings are not where they should be and she is in jeopardy of not getting a third season. On the way home one night, she finds some abandoned newborn kittens.

Josie rescues pets and does animal related YouTube videos. She gets a call from Eve asking her to take the kittens but she can't do it because she is working night and day at a bar she inherited. She gives Eve tips on how to get them through the night and promises to try and find someone who can take them in.

What follows is a beautiful story of two women tainted with sadness who find a bit of contentedness in each other's company. And despite their attempts at casual, the intensity of their attraction and depth of their connection, creates something bigger than they ever could have anticipated.

The characters were rich with unique personalities and backstory. I loved both Eve and Josie for all of their endearing qualities and heartbreaking faults. Eve was a sexy, petite, impenetrable business woman throwing herself into work to avoid her own thoughts and memories. Josie was a quirky, full-of-life, altruistic gal working herself into the ground out of obligation.

There is something so satisfying in witnessing someone's walls crumbling despite all of their attempts at resisting.

I could find no faults in this. It was a deeply moving love story.

I recommend this to anyone who loves to read about romance, reality television, bars, strong chemistry, meaningful history, striving for success, and Broadway kittens.

I enjoyed this book so much. It touched certain parts of me called nostalgia, hope and love. Inevitable tears poured as I got swept away into Eve's and Josie's journey. This novel was the first I read from this writer but certainly won't be the last.
    Well done Rachel!

This is my first book from Ms. Lacey, but it won't be my last. Filled with great writing and storytelling, I really didn't want the book to end. Eve is a marketing guru and tv host who helps businesses from going under. One night she finds a bag of newborn kittens in the trash near her home. Having no prior experience, she calls Josie who runs a pet rescue and does animal related YouTube videos to see if she can drop off the kittens. Josie can't take them because she just inherited a bar from her dad and she's working non-stop trying to keep it from going under. Well, the two meet and the story is beautiful.

I really liked both characters who had suffered a great deal of loss in their pasts. It's a slow burning story of two people who found real contentment with each other, no matter how they tried to keep their relationship casual. The friendships of Adam and Kaia added so much support and fun to the story. And the litter of kittens? Well, they opened up Eve's soul and helped her make room for Josie in her heart! I loved it!

It opens in a somewhat ordinary way, and hearts ignite in the usual way but the fireworks that follow are simply fantastic. I laughed, I smirked, and I cried a lot. This story will draw you in and unravel you in the most wonderful and raw "true feels" kinda way. Thank you Rachel.

The first book in the “Midnight in Manhattan” series and it certainly won’t be the only one I’ll read. I’ve read a lot of Rachel’s other books and I’m going to race through the other three in this series as I’m keen to keep up with the lives of the different characters that crop up in each book. The slow burn romance between Josie and Eve was sublime. Two people so different, yet totally made for each other. The patience displayed by Josie while she waited for Eve to catch up was heartbreaking but so rewarding. Rachel’s expert writing keeps the momentum going throughout and I loved the kitten care sharing. I really enjoyed this one and now it’s straight on to Book #2…
