Doris Flies Solo (Broken Wings Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 265 ratings

Air Transport Auxiliary pilot Doris Johnson is sent on a solo trip, escorting a British general on a secret mission to Scotland, vital to the success of D-Day, the forthcoming invasion of Nazi-occupied France. Her natural inquisitiveness means her life is put in great danger and she'll need more than her superb flying skills to survive. Doris has to trust her own instincts, and those of the new friends she makes, so that everyone comes through their adventures in one piece. Not everything is as it seems, sometimes by design, as she faces whatever is thrown at her with a determined smile and the spirit to stand fast for what is good and right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 28, 2024
Anybody who knows me well, knows that not only am I a book geek but I am also a historical fiction nerd too with a particular interest in stories set during the Second World War. So you can probably imagine why the books in the 'Broken Wings' series, written by M. W. Arnold, appeal so much to me. When I heard that the author was due to release book 6 in the 'Broken Wings' series, I just knew that I had to grab a copy and hibernate until I had read the very last word on the very last page. The sixth book in the series is called 'Doris Flies Solo' and it was released on 23rd September 2024. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Doris Flies Solo' but more about that in a bit.

The fact that I saw the name 'M. W. Arnold' on the cover of a book that I knew I hadn't read yet was enough to grab my attention and draw me in. As soon as I started reading, that was it. I knew that I wouldn't be doing anything other than reading for the rest of the afternoon because I knew that I wouldn't be able to put the book down. I must be psychic because that's exactly what happened. I was drawn into the story from the very beginning and found it nigh on impossible to stop reading. My Kindle wasn't exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn't bear to miss a single second of the story. Besides, I felt as though I had reunited with an old friend in Doris so I had to keep reading to see how the story was going to pan out and to learn what this meant for Doris. The more of the book that I read, the more that I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. I was so wrapped up in the story that I lost all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the book. All too soon I reached the end of 'Doris Flies Solo' and had to say goodbye to the women of the Air Transport Auxiliary and their friends and families. I found 'Doris Flies Solo' to be a gripping and interesting piece of historical fiction, which certainly kept me guessing and held my attention throughout.

'Doris Flies Solo' is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from M. W. Arnold. The author certainly knows how to grab the reader's attention and draw them into what proves to be one heck of a story, whilst at the same time making the reader feel as though they are part of the story themselves and at the heart of the action. That's how I felt anyway. The author clearly cares about his characters and this shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which he describes them. He makes his characters seem just as real as you and I and as mentioned earlier in the review, I felt as though I was reuniting with old friends in the form of Doris and her pals. I grew to love most of the characters and I cared about what happened to them. M. W. Arnold has clearly done an awful lot of research into the time period during which this story takes place and this helps the story seem that bit more authentic. Short of inventing a time machine and travelling back to the Second World War era, reading books such as 'Doris Flies Solo' are the nearest I am going to get to being able to 'experience' that particular era for myself. 'Doris Flies Solo' was a pleasure to read and I look forward to reading much more from M. W. Arnold in the future.

In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Doris Flies Solo' and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to other readers. If you want to read superb historical fiction then look no further because M. W. Arnold is the perfect author for you. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
