Deck the Fire Halls Kindle Edition
Doctor Robinson O’Reilly is burned out. Exhausted, jaded, and disillusioned with the bureaucracy of his profession, he’s ready to throw away his entire career. Convinced to take a part-time position in a small town instead, he packs his medical bag for Hartbridge, Montana.
Who knows, maybe the change of pace and mountain air will do him good.
Firefighter Captain Soren De Silva moved to Hartbridge two years ago. He loves the town, the people, his job. What he doesn’t like is the lack of queer men. Well, the lack of available queer men. There are a few queer couples in town whom Soren can only look at with envy.
He wants what they have.
There’s a new doctor in town; not Soren’s usual type, but there’s something about him that Soren can’t ignore. A friendship sparks between them and Soren can’t help but wonder if that Hartbridge Christmas magic the others joke about is real.
Because a spark leads to flames, and this is not a fire Soren wants to extinguish.

Dr. Robinson O'Reilly, of 'Deck the Fire Halls' by N.R. Walker, has been working in a big city E.R. for years, but when the pressure becomes unbearable, Rob knows that he has to find a way to ease the tension, or he will have to give up medicine altogether. A colleague, who is also a friend, suggests a solution; the doctor in Hartbridge, Oregon, is retiring and needs a part-time doctor to help him. Rob faces a weighty decision – to leave his current life behind and start anew in Oregon. He is unsure about this move, but it will give him time to sort things out.
Firefighter Captain Soren DeSilva loves Hartbridge but mourns that he doesn't have someone to share his life with. It doesn't help that it has a close-knit group of gay men, all of whom are couples. Being a fifth wheel is not easy. While starting his motorcycle one morning, his new next-door neighbor rushes out to vehemently scold him about the noise. It would have been considerably more intimidating if said neighbor hadn't worn pink flamingo and rainbow pajamas.
Rob, looking forward to getting some much-needed rest in this sleepy little town, is startled by the roar of a motorcycle outside his house! He leaps out of bed and rushes to the door to give the rider a piece of his mind. Instead, he becomes flustered to discover the culprit is his new next-door neighbor, who looks incredibly sexy on his Harley. Instead of delivering the rant Rob had planned, he mumbles something unintelligible and runs back into the house, leaving Soren bemused and confused.
Soren is intrigued by the doctor, and he sees a sadness in his eyes that belays his jovial demeanor; he tries to get to know him. He wants to get to know him better but tries to move slowly.
It's been a long time since Rob has even entertained the idea of a relationship with anyone, but Soren's compassion and caring make him want to try. He, too, doesn't want to rush into a relationship. They both know about the Christmas Cupid who “haunts” Hartbridge but try to disregard it. Yet, the more they try, the more feasible it seems.
It was good to be back in Hartbridge for Christmas and watch it work its magic on yet another couple. Catching up with all the guys from the other books in the series was a treat. Thanks, N.R., for the enjoyable Christmas story. Originally reviewed at Rainbow Book Reviews.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2025I’ve lived this series, but I love all of Walker’s books. They’re so romantic and the steamy scenes are always so well-written.
There were a few Australian-isms here and there - a mistake this author usually doesn’t make when the books are set in America. But I noticed she referred to the Secret Santa gift exchange as “Kris Kringle” which no American would call it, but her characters didn’t blink an eye. They also order meat pies for dinner, which aren’t a thing in America. Of course you could find one at a British or Irish pub, but at a small-town diner in America? The closest you would get would be a chicken pot pie, but never a steak and Guinness pie or Australian sausage roll.
It’s super nit-picky but those little things always take me out of the story a bit. She has a multi-national cast of characters here, though, so when the Canadian refers to a beanie as a toque that just makes sense. It’s if the Americans do the same that bugs me.
But I’ll never get tired of this author’s stories. I always want to live in the scenes she creates. They’re just really lovely. And we got to see all our favorite men again. While it’s not obvious that these books are part of a series since they’re released as stand-alone, you would do well to read them in the order that they were released so that you get to know this whole, fun cast of characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2025When Rob left the high powered, non-stop world of the big city hospital life behind, he had no idea what to expect moving to a tiny, rural town where everyone seems to know everyone's business. Helping in the clinic a few days a week left him wondering how to fill his suddenly open schedule. Getting to know the sexy fireman next door might keep him busy. Too bad he parks his very loud Harley right under Rob's bedroom window!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2025I have very mixed feelings about this book. Walker is a decent writer, and I do appreciate the attention to detail. However, at the end of the story, I found myself wondering … Where was the plot???
The characters are fully developed. The spicy scenes are plenty spicy (although Soren does come off as a bit of a selfish top, Rob is a bit too subservient, and I occasionally found myself thinking this book would have been better as a M/F romance). And while I did enjoy reading the book for the most part, near the end I kept thinking, “I’ll be glad when I’m done with this one.”
Walker took a great deal of time building the relationship between Soren and Rob, almost too much time. Unfortunately, that proved to be detrimental to an actual storyline. For this reason, I’m giving DECK THE FIRE HALLS three stars only, and I can safely say that I will not be diving into any other of her books.

A super sweet and romantic holiday story!
I probably shouldn’t have jumped straight into book five in this series, as the past characters were quite present and I felt like I was missing some context... But anyways, Deck the Fire Halls was a very sweet and charming story, pretty much exactly what one can expect from a small town holiday romance.
Rob and Soren had a bit of a rough start, but it wasn’t long before Soren had managed to charm his way into Rob’s life. Soren was a total golden retriever character, and it was fun to see how he tried to get Rob to notice and like him. I really liked their communication and how there wasn’t any unnecessary drama - just two mature men falling in love. There were lots of lighthearted, fun and steamy moments with these two!
Overall a sweet, no angst holiday story with some grumpy / sunshine, small town vibes, meddling friends, and a lot of cosy Christmas feels!

5.0 out of 5 stars So eine schöne Geschichte! 😍

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this return to Hartbridge
I loved so much how Soren and Rob first encounter each other. This book has all the Christmassy goodness, awesome characters and loved seeing the returning characters again. Feel-good story. 5 flamingo pajama pants! Also loved seeing the word toque!

4.0 out of 5 stars vraie romance, à l'image de la saison
j'ai aimé les personnages bien qu'ils soient un peu fades, par rapport à d'autres romans de l'auteure. J'aime beaucoup lire ses livres et j'en rate rarement un.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simplesmente amando Rob e Soren
N.R. Walker nos apresenta mais uma história de amor acontecendo na pequena cidade de Harthbridge na época de Natal, ou seja, o cupido ataca novamente.
Dessa vez é a história do bombeiro gato e o médico lindo e prestativo.
Recomendo.
