Dance on Fire Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

Each May, the Central California town of Kingsburg celebrates its Swedish heritage with the annual Swedish Festival: a weekend event where the town puts on its traditional dress, culminating with a dance around a Maypole on Friday, and a Swedish pancake breakfast and parade on Saturday. The town with a population of over 11,000 residents draws thousands more to the event. This year, two uninvited guests also converged upon the unsuspecting town. Nathaniel is a vampire. He wandered into town, bothering no one; feeding upon stray cats and other vermin, wanting nothing more than to have a place to rest his head. Vincent is a second vampire, and the one responsible for making Nathaniel. He has been searching for his long lost “son” for well over two centuries. Vincent’s goal is to take Nathaniel home or kill him. Nathaniel has often wished for death, wondering why God ever allowed this punishment: to walk the earth undead and unable to be redeemed. Does God remember the little boy from Romania who watched his parents die, was raised by the murdering vampire, only to become one himself? What does God think of Nathaniel and could there yet be redemption for one outside of heaven? Ten days before the start of the Swedish Festival the most tumultuous week in the history of Kingsburg has begun with two vampires leaving death and destruction in their wake. Kingsburg Police Detectives Mark Jackson and Michael Lopez, Barbara and the entire Lopez family find themselves drawn into something that threatens to destroy them all or leave them scarred forever. In a marriage of the classic horror story and the Christian themes of good conquering evil and redemption, Dance on Fire is the account of characters being drawn into the fire and the supernatural forces around them watching as they burn.

I was born in Hanford, California in 1969. In the mid 1970's, my father began a Law Enforcement career just up the road with the Kingsburg Police Department, taking our family there. It was in junior high school when things began to take shape. I discovered horror novels - books by Stephen King, Clive Barker and Michael Slade, to name a few - , as well as hard rock music. These influences began to form a spark of creativity within me. I began to play guitar and pen song lyrics, but soon found myself confined in that tight medium, desiring to do longer works.

After high school, I moved on to the local community college where I met my wife. By this time, I had written a handful of short stories, a couple of novellas and had begun writing the novel that would become, “Dance on Fire”.

Career changes, building a family, and the busyness of life impeded my writing at this point. It wasn’t until I came to the realization near my fortieth birthday, that I didn't want to go to the grave with any regrets, that I plunged headlong into the dust-covered novel in earnest and not only completed it after twenty years, but started and completed its sequel soon after.

My family still makes its home Kingsburg, which is the setting for my vampire series, and perhaps a few other things as well. For my day job, I am an Administrative Manager for Sun-Maid Growers of California.

This is a debut novel 20 years in the making. I am so glad that the author allowed it to come to fruition and to be published. It is a different take on the vampire story but a welcome one. It is amazing that though it has quite a bit of blood and gore, that’s not the center of the story at all. This is a story about humanity, and love, and about redemption. I look forward to reading the sequel. Well done, James Garcia Junior. This is a very fine book.

I became interested in this book after seeing an advertisement for it stating “brings Christianity and vampires on a collision course”, which sounded outside-the-box for sure.

Overall, I liked it. I liked the characters and the idea that there could be a vampire who’s searching for redemption and escape from “the creature of the night” that he’s become. The writing itself kept my interest. It was well paced and reminiscent of 80’s horror – like The Lost Boys. Overall, a good story.

One thing I must mention, although Christianity plays a role in this book, I noticed on Amazon that it isn’t categorized as “Christian fiction”. I think this is accurate. By secular standards, it’s a fairly clean novel. However, there is some language offensive to many Christians, including misuse of the Lord’s name. I state this, not to discourage one from reading it. Like I say, it’s a good read overall, and not categorized as Christian fiction, but wanted to note this as a possible trigger warning.

Ok, so I love books involving vampires, therefore have read quite a few. I've always thought of vampires as sexy & dangerous. Don't think I have ever considered one as an "angel" or a "guardian", like I did in Dance on Fire. What a pleasant, pleasant surprise. I truly enjoyed this book. James gave vampires an entirely different view to me. I immediately fell in love with Nathaniel. Captured as a child, imprisoned, then turned against his will. He has lived his life alone, feeding on stray animals, never on humans. His life changes the day he saves Barbara & her babies lives. This story not only showed how evil & despicable a vampire could be, but how wonderful, God worthy people they also are. You have drama, mystery, horror, & just intense suspense, plus spirituality, nothing over the top, but just enough to make the story work really, really well. Highly recommended, will be thoroughly enjoyed. Can't wait for the sequel, I need to know more about Nathaniel, the man deserves a happily ever after.

The book was pretty good. Christian vampires are sometimes done successfully. The Night Mission and Night Kingdom series by Iris Fields are good and better for animal lovers. No killing stray cats because, "Nobody cares about them." I recall years ago an author, Sue Dent, who wrote some good ones.

I was disappointed this book had foul language in it. Usually, before I buy a book, I look at the samples and reviews to see if it will put words I don't want in my head. But this one I just bought thinking that since it was supposedly geared toward the Christian audience, it wouldn't have the S word and such. At least it wasn't heavy profanity, but why have any?

As for the story, it mostly kept my attention. Sometimes, it seemed over-detailed. I appreciate an introduction to the scene, but I'm not sure why I needed to know so much about the joggers who were just going to find the body and never appear in the story again.

Toward the end, it got hard to keep up with what was going on and why, and I kept going back trying to figure out what I missed. I can't figure out why when some people became vampires, they kept their sense of morals. Others turned into sadistic, giggly girls.

There seemed to be a few mistakes in editing, though not bad for a self-published book.

"Barbara felt as the vampire quickly moved over her ..." I think it should be fell instead of felt.

Overall, I would say worth reading if not for the bad words. I mean, I know the murders aren't really happening, but the bad words are really there. If nothing else, I find them annoying.
