Dangerous Ground (Fiona Carver Book 1) Kindle Edition
In the remote and unpredictable Aleutians, danger comes without warning in an adrenaline rush of a novel by USA Today bestselling author Rachel Grant.
Archaeologist Fiona Carver has unfinished business in the Aleutian Islands. After an emergency evacuation cut her first expedition short, she’s finally back. But time is not on her side as she races to finish documenting the remnants of a prehistoric village, recover missing artifacts, and track down missing volcanologist Dylan Slater.
Having bluffed his way onto Fiona’s team with fake credentials, wildlife photographer Dean Slater is willing to risk more than federal prison to find his missing brother, but he needs Fiona’s help. She knows the inhospitable terrain better than anyone.
When the two set out together on a perilous journey, it becomes more than a recovery mission. In their fight for survival, nature isn’t the only threat. They aren’t the only ones on the hunt. Mile by dangerous mile, someone is hunting them.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis hot suspenseful romance is intrigue, danger, excitement, mystery, and romance strapped onto roller coaster pacing. Dean and Fiona are real, relatable people who have flaws, but are really trying to just do their best as messy fallible humans while also trying not to die. Fiona is an archeologist who works for the US Navy on a special project on the Aleutian Islands. She left a historic site exposed five weeks ago when the team was evacuated because of weather. She also does not do flings. Dean is a renowned wildlife photographer who’s twin brother, Dylan, a vulcanologist, disappeared from after the evacuation 5 weeks ago. So he impersonates an ornithologist to get on the island to find him. He does not do relationships and he believes Dylan and Fiona are dating. As soon as Dean and Fiona meet on the plane the chemistry ignites. Then, shortly after their arrival, strange coincidences begin to happen, the mystery of Dylan’s disappearance deepens, and the danger kicks into high gear. The suspenseful adventure of Dean and Fiona will give you all the feels - laughing, crying, swooning, gasping, cringing, teeth gritting, and cheering. The book has a little bit of everything just like you would expect from romantic suspense - sweet moments, strong bonds, real life issues, imperfect characters, dangerous heart stopping moments, mystery, uber protective men, secrets, painful pasts, evil actors, coincidences, and love. The story included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and an engaging storyline. I love when romantic suspense keeps me guessing who the bad guys are and this story did that so well. While the mystery of Dylan’s disappearance and what was happening on the island were resolved, be prepared, the romance in this story was not resolved by the end. I am looking forward to the next book and hoping for more growth for Dean.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoy nature survival romance for some reason as well as archeological suspense romance. Neither genre is plentiful. This was both and really well done. Slow-burn but always present romance. Paired up to fight the elements to survive. A setting made more mysterious by the ancient culture underneath and around them that the FMC was exploring. Intelligent, resilient, capable main characters. It's not an HEA, but as I'm about to read the sequel, I'm hopeful I'll get more of the same genre tropes in the new setting and plot and, perhaps a Happy for Right Now at thr end of it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhile the story was interesting the book was overloaded with facts that detracted from story. The ending left me dissatisfied because with all that Dean, the main character, went through, he did not show any emotional growth. I don’t get how he could be so caught up on a marriage that was so brief that he could not have another meaningful relationship. I’ve never left a book review so it says a lot that I’m leaving one.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis review is for both the ebook and the Audible. This is the first book in a series about Fiona Carver, an archaeologist based in the Northwest. The premise for the book seems simple enough, a volcano expert, Dylan Slater, that was working with Fiona at a remote island in the Aleutian Islands is missing. His brother, Dean Slater, a wildlife photographer has joined the expedition, borrowing the identity of a real bird expert, in order to find his missing brother. Then everything goes haywire. There is so much lying among the members of the expedition that it's impossible to know who to trust.
In addition, the backstories of Fiona and Dean is also shrouded for most of the book. But they are constantly fighting their attraction to each other. That was the only part I found irritating. Dean kept fighting the attraction to Fiona because he believed Fiona was Dylan's girlfriend. Even when she denied it, he still believed Dylan was interested in her. Other than that, I found the book very intriguing. I also would read about something in the book that sounded interesting enough so that I would go online to check it out. There was so much going on in the background that at times it was too much but luckily the issues became clearer in a few pages. Beware of claustrophobia during some parts of the book.
I did not like the voice of the narrator for the men. Not sure why. But I loved the female narrators, especially the one for Fiona. Unfortunately the Audible for the second ebook has the same narrator. Maybe he will grow on me. One can only hope. In which case I will revise that section of my review.
He grew on me. Revised rating to 5 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFirst off, the narrators did a wonderful job. I always enjoy having both a male and female narrator.
The storyline was compelling and easily kept my attention. The characters were relatable and interesting… to the point I wanted to smack Dean upside the head a few times.
I wasn’t thrilled with the ending. Since this is a two book series I am trusting that this isn’t the end but a “not so happy for now” pause with the promise of an eventual happy ending. We shall see. I’m off to read the next book.
I did like that I was able to listen and follow along with the book at the same time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great adventure and romance combined...
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the first of the series and I loved this book. I was immediately transported into the wilderness of the Aleutian islands, with unforgiving storms, volcanoes and archeological sites. I also enjoyed getting to know the characters and reading about the passion building between Fiona, an archeologist and Dean who is part of the scientific expedition. Great read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Like volcanoes?
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBe warned - this is a continuing story! I'm a bit miffed because although I saw book two and three for sale, I didn't realise there wasn't a complete ending for book one. But I do want to know the motive behind the bad guys and how Dean and Fiona get on. Maybe there's someone for Dylan a bit later? Lots of detail about volcanoes and history in the people of the island. Not too much on archeology. Good story of becoming friends first. Not just going at it like bunnies from the start and a bit of story around that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI normally love all books this author writes - they usually feature smart, badass heroines. Fiona is sort of written like that, too, but she is more two dimensional. She definitely doesn’t get as much air time as the male character, and we definitely don’t get as much of her back story, despite being the titular character.
The biggest issue with this book, and the most disappointing, is the way that the male character continually (over and over again, it’s exhausting) reduces Fiona to an object and does not recognise her autonomy. He keeps thinking he needs to ‘give’ Fiona to his brother. There is zero regard for Fiona’s thoughts, feelings or desires. For an author that to date has written some great feminist characters, I was deeply disappointed and this attitude further promotes problematic and patriarchal ways of thinking. Very surprised that this attitude and this type of writing would be reflective of the authors beliefs.
Further, it’s an unsatisfactory ending which I think should be noted in the summary before customers purchase the book.
