Darker Shades (House of Skin) Kindle Edition
I know that better than most men, but I never understood its true face until I let them in my club and struck a deal. The Cortez brothers brought money and allegiance. All I had to do was agree and do as I was told. But Cortez was a monster I hadn't fully understood. And I wasn't prepared for one of the girls. She was spice and ire. Attitude and fire. With a body to kill for. Yeah, my conscience got involved. Or maybe it was my heart.

About the authors
Hailing from the depths of the quiet British countryside, Charlotte likes nothing better than sinking into her characters dark world's. Sometimes they're kinky, sometimes they're twisted, and sometimes they're a serious hold on tight situation, but her stories are always filled with romance and love in some form.
With over 20 books now written under varying names, she's both professional and invested in her books. They've become a huge part of her life and rightly so. Without them, she thinks she might actually die.
Life is a torrent of differences, different needs and wants, and it doesn't always end that well. Yet we strive ..."

Rachel De Lune writes emotionally driven contemporary romance.
She began scribbling her stories in the pages of a notebook several years ago and still can’t resist putting pen to real paper. What ifs are turned into heartfelt stories of love where there will always be a HEA.
Rachel lives in the South West of England and daydreams about shoes with red soles, lingerie and chocolate. If she’s not writing HEAs, she’s probably reading them. She is a wife and has a beautiful daughter.
For every woman who's ever desired more.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2022This is amazing dark twisted read that have you reading in one sitting with this dark steamy read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2023I bought this book because it was only 99 cents and when I started reading When Sinners Fall, I felt like I was missing something. And I was.
I might have considered it a chore but in the end, I was equally satisfied but left wanting more?
I question this because it is probably not the traditional HEA we are used to as readers but it is probably the only ending Jackson and Naja will get.
Would I consider it a dark romance? Not really. They are dark men who are capable of anything if they can so easily trade other humans but this wasn't a very dark romance and the one sex scene was pretty vanilla. All it lacked was words of endearment.
The characters are complicated but I like that. I don't know how bad of a man Jackson is or if he just dabbles in wrongdoing. There is a whole world behind this story that I am not going to try and get caught up on before I read the book that brought me here in the first place.
I guess when you are literally plucked from the street to be sold, you don't get to dwell too much on your back story or the life you left behind. I reckon someone knows they are missing but I don't know much about Naja and Miri. They are Danish. Miri is younger and was about to start college. Maybe she will have a book later in some series?
It's a short book with a lot going on. It's hard for you to settle any one way because everything is up in the air. It's well-written and paced. I don't even know if I want more or if I think I should. Either way, clearly I have found a world to dive into and I look forward to unravelling the pieces.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2023Def stops in a cliffhanger and I know its a prequel novella but I’m hoping to see a full book for Naja and Jackson
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2024Sometimes there is a book that you feel hopeful about. The synopsis is fantastic and you are willing to take a chance on a new author. That was the case when I picked up this book. Although in the end the book was not for me… it is well written. The story is pretty good. I would give it a shot!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2022This is definitely not for the faint hearted. I knew Darker Shades would be a dark romance, but it was so much darker than expected. The story was well written and the characters interesting, but the premise was not my cup of tea. I thought about giving upon it, but I continued reading so I could learn how the main characters would escape the precarious situation they were in. A situation created by the hero because of his insatiable want for money. He was no saint, but the situation he got caught up in, wasn't something he could condone, forcing him to formulate a creative way to to extricate himself from it.
An interesting but disturbing tale.
The next book in the series follows the romantic journey of one of the many villains appearing in Darker Shades.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2022Not for the faint of heart and really well written. I was worried from the get go about what was going on and going to happen to Naja and Miri. Charlotte and Rachel's writing had me dare I say liking Jackson?! Yes, I like him. I NEED to know what's going to happen. I need there to be justice served. But I'm also scared because after all it's a dark romance. Lol!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read. I cannot wait for When Sinners Fall.
I absolutely loved reading Darker Shades. This novella has been written perfectly. Not only do we have a fabulous story that I devoured in one sitting, but also a fantastic introduction to The House of Skin series which I cannot wait to be released!
This short story is gripping, exciting and explosive! The outcome of the situation that Naja and Jackson find themselves in was never a certainty as there are many twists and turns throughout the story that could have led them down multiple different paths – and I loved this. There are moments when my heart hurt for Naja and her sister Miri. However, without the Cortez brothers, Jackson and Naja never would have met and I cannot wait to discover what happens next. The mention of the Canes and Landon Broderick brought out the biggest smile on my face, and if you have read both the Cane and The Broderick Saga series you’ll understand why! If you haven’t, then please do! I highly recommend both to you to read.
Whether Charlotte E. Hart and Rachel De Lune are writing individually or creating incredible stories together as Hart De Lune, I am never disappointed. I know you’ll enjoy reading Darker Shades as much as I have.
5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and powerful
This is a dark story with little happiness, but it paints a powerful picture of the evils of human trafficking. The horrors the women endure and the pure evil of those who perpetrate the horrors. Luckily for Naja and Miri, Jackson still has a conscience. I was captivated by Naja’s strength and the lengths she went to to protect her sister. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the House of Skin Series.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a start to a series!
And boom this is how you start a series off!
This may be a short read but it certainly packs a punch full of darkness right off the bat!
Jackson Reed gets himself involved with a deal that has him changing his mond rather quickly once it all begins, when he first sets his sights on Naja he knows shes different but he cant understand why.
Naja is going through one of the worst things you could ever imagine but all she can think about is protecting her sister.
Explosive, traumatic, a huge page turner im not sure these authors could have packed much more into this short novella!
Onto reading Book one next for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enthralling intro to a new dark romance series
Fantastic introduction to the House of Skins series. This may be a novella but there was so much depth and detail, it kept me glued to the pages from the start.
We met London crime boss Jackson Reed in The Broderick series and let's say he wasn't exactly pleasant! However we see another side to him here as he gets mixed up in a very dangerous contract with the lethal Cortez brothers who deal in a very dark trade.
When Naja catches Jacksons eye, despite the dangerous situation they are in, something cracks his hard outer shell, but will he find his conscience before its too late?
This was action packed, heartbreaking at times with what Naja and her little sister Miri are put through, fast paced, brutal but addictive reading.
These Cortez brothers blow the "not exactly pleasant" out the window! Cruel and cold, I cant wait to see how Hart de Lune show them in a different light. Can they make me love them like they did with Jackson, despite how they make their money? Cant wait to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a shade darker but oh so good!
I didn’t realise this was available to read until I went on to the authors page and saw it live. So I read this after When Sinners Fall.
These books are so good! Although this was just a little taster into the Cortez world. Honestly I’m not sure how I’d feel If I’d read this before WSF, but I did love it. I’d have still carried on just because of sheer curiosity.
We get more side characters from apparently other books… where have I been all this time?
Jackson and Naja. Im really hoping they get their own book. Or at least I can hope. Lol
Again another huge five stars. Charlotte Hart and Rachel De Lune have me hooked. I’m now going to my way through their collection. Looks like saying goodbye to my hard earned cash on paperbacks!
Go grab this now. Personally if I had to recommend which book to start with, I’d definitely say go with When Sinners Fall first.
