Darkest Moon (Shadow Guild: Wolf Queen Book 1) Kindle Edition
I’m supposed to be the Alpha's mate. Screw that.
Since I was born, I was destined to be one thing—the Alpha’s Mate. It should be every girl’s dream. Not mine, though. He’s too dark and damaged, and I’ve got a secret he can never know: I’m not a true wolf.
Instead of waiting for him to figure out I’m an abomination, I left on my fifteenth birthday. But I didn’t go far. No way in hell would I let fate drive me from the town I love.
Ten years later, I’m still hiding in plain sight. When I occasionally see him on the street—deadly, sexy, powerful--I just walk by. Keep my head down.
Until that night. Wrong place, wrong time, and suddenly I’m accused of murdering someone from my old pack. And he’s there. Blaming me. I’ve got one chance to prove my innocence and find the real killer, or I'm dead by shifter law.
Fortunately, the Alpha doesn't recognize me because I'm no longer the same ugly duckling. He senses I'm special though, and he won’t stop until he figures out the truth. But when he does, I’ll be in danger from more than just the murderer.

About the author

Before becoming a writer, Linsey was an archaeologist who studied shipwrecks in all kinds of water, from the tropics to muddy rivers (and she has a distinct preference for one over the other). After a decade of tromping around in search of old bits of stuff, she settled down to start penning her own adventure novels and is freaking delighted that people seem to like them. Since life is better with a little (or a lot of) magic, she writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2021I had the privilege of reading this book through Kindle Unlimited. I freely confess I should have been working, but was unwilling to pull myself out of this detailed and engrossing read. The magic, mystery, shifter culture, world building, and plot twists blended into my favorite kind of read: one full of the unexpected. I will be
reading more from this author and buying her books when my budget allows.
I also confess, as much as I enjoyed all of the well-developed characters, Ralph was my favorite.
And...happy dance...it's a clean read! Only a very few F-bombs. There was plenty of steam, but no porn. *Happy sigh.* (I am just not into watching people have sex or make love.) There is violence, but it's not detailed and it fits. Two guys genuinely want to fight? I get it. The anger and rage of someone who is losing his mind? Understandable, and none of the violence is glorified.
Some might call the ending a cliffhanger. I do not. The story arc for this book was completed very well; the pacing was exactly right. Were there unexpected revelations at the end? Of course! It has me looking forward to seeing how they play out in the next book, but with this book's story told in full, I am a satisfied reader.
This book was well worth my time--and rearranging my work schedule!
Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2023I confess to enjoying fated mate stories, & this one is a thwarted desire version, as there's a curse for each member of the lucky couple forcing them to keep apart!
The author doesn't work the angst so much as the forbidden desire, while the questions of how long before our hero figures out who the heroine is & how will he react keeps you reading.
It's not a great story - it's full of stereotypes & predictable turns - but it's well enough done that it's a pretty good one. Entertaining enough to keep me reading without getting bored or annoyed.
The ending is what I call a chapter or episode type ending. It's not an actual cliffhanger in the sense that something big happens, & then cuts off immediately after, so you have to wait for the next book to find out. Rather, the mystery is solved but reveals a new, bigger mystery in the process, & the heroine's relationship with the hero is left in question. Tune in for the next episode! Which I will. Happily, the whole series is out.
*Romance: sexual attraction & passionate kissing but nothing graphic
*Language: moderate - approximately 3 dozen each of the common swears - plus 7 f-bombs
*Religion: I had hope when the author started out using made up swears in her world of gods & goddesses, but sadly it didn't last. A half dozen careless uses of the Lord's Name plus 3 as curses. (Dear author, you lose NO readers for respecting the beliefs of a sizable portion of your audience, but you will definitely lose some for not)
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2021Daggum, not going to lie I'm pretty excited for this series. First off I absolutely love how Lindsey halls series tie into each other and you get to keep seeing all the characters we have come to love.
This particular book just flies right on into the story and I love that! We have had the world building throughout this series so no need for the usual intros. ( But if you are starting here you won't be that lost I don't think)
Eve has run from a painful past and is now put in a situation where her survival and secrets are harder to keep than ever. She's strong and won't be pushed around and Lachlan is a pusher!
I really like the dual pov, it's awesome knowing both sides and thier motivations! Although because of that I have no idea as to how this will play out. Some secrets are pretty massive and hard to see how they can be resolved, and things may become a whooooole lot bigger than we all thought. Giant plus is I only have to wait a month for book two!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2025Very good story line with the magic, action, witches, developing romance runs the the whole potion together. Definitely recommend giving it a try
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2025The denial, constant relationship road blocks & needlessly prolonged suspense meant that I couldn’t even get through book 3 to find out “what” type of shifter she was or if they ever get to fight the “boss”. Apparently this is a 5 book series. It could’ve been great b’cus the FMC is scrappy with her potions, genuinely interesting with a GREAT inner circle of girls (& their guys) but the story line & relationship angst just drug on for 1 or maybe 2 books too many. I would rate this a 🫑 or 1/2-🌶️.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2021Darkest Moon is the first book in the third Shadow Guild series. It follows Eve, first met in Once Bitten (Shadow Guild: The Rebel). Eve gets tangled up with the Shifter Guild’s Alpha, Lachlan, when she is accused of a heinous crime. Like all of Hall’s heroine’s, Eve carries a secret from a past she wishes to keep hidden. Eve and Lachlan have their own problems but those problems are intertwined and they must work together to solve the crimes while also confronting their unpleasant past/s.
While Eve is a character from a previous series, a reader could pick up Darkest Moon and follow along without feeling like part of the story is missing. New readers aren’t bombarded with awkward and/or tedious information dumps. At the same time, the book isn’t bogged down in recaps.
This was a quick and enjoyable read filled with magic, mystery, and a side of slow burn chemistry. The characters are likable. Their strife is relatable. The pace is quick but steady. The world building is on point, giving readers great visuals of the various settings without turning into filler. Having read nearly all of Linsey Hall’s works, this one is my favorite.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2024I loved this book!
I am really enjoying all the tension between Eve and Lachlan.
I love Eve and her friends and Ralph!
This book threw out some twists and I can’t wait for the next book!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2024Love this slow burn of a story. Moves at a great pace. Love the characters. Love George.

5.0 out of 5 stars potions
What a incredible start to this series.
Not only is it written so well but the story itself is amazing.
There’s a lot of mystery in book 1. A lot of Agatha Christie Vibes, Sherlock Holmes’s and Nancy drew.
A murder mystery with some twists and surprises.
It’s a slow burner but that’s to be expected with the plot and reasons with the characters. Expect some famous characters in this series and how the author has introduced them into the story with her own twist. I think it’s made a pretty good impression on the series too. Love anything unique and quirky.
I’m already hooked and can’t wait to carry on the series, it’s definitely addicting and binge worthy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice read
Enjoyed the storyline, book was over before I knew. Lots of action and not much time for character depth. I am unsure for now about the need for powerful friends or why MC has a familiar. That part was not explained properly. Many bits and pieces missing. Looking forward to next book to fill the gaps hopefully

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommend - a good read
Recommend; original story line, good character development, strong male and female characters. A bit of a twist on the Normal shifter story line. Can wait for the next book in the series :)

5.0 out of 5 stars happy dance
Do you ever get stuck in a reading rutt? You read too many books of the same genre and can't seem to find something satisfying? That was me for the last month so I'm doing a happy dance after finishing Darkest Moon.
It's such a smooth journey into this series and I can't leave myself hanging on this cliff. I'm diving right off for more.
