The Daughter of Paradiso: Absolutely beautiful and gripping historical fiction (The Paradiso Novels Book 3) Kindle Edition
A TERRIFIED CHILD. A DESPERATE MOTHER. THE PROMISE OF A NEW LIFE...
Italy, 1963. Graziella Bianchi returns to Paradiso, barely able to believe she has been gifted her childhood home by an old friend.
The beautiful house has fallen into a state of disrepair, but Graziella is determined to restore it to its former glory.
Although one dream has come true, life is far from perfect. She and her daughter, Lucia, are nearly penniless and the pair are on the run from Graziella’s violent husband.
With divorce not yet legal and the law still giving husbands ultimate control over their wives, Graziella must fight not only to gain her independence, but also to keep her daughter.
The villagers of Pieve Santa Clara, with their long and loyal memories, step in, and gradually a good life becomes a possibility for Graziella and Lucia.
But when her estranged husband turns up, drunk and angry, everything Graziella has worked so hard for is under threat.
The Daughter of Paradiso is a compelling and emotionally-charged historical novel perfect for fans of Dinah Jeffries, Lucinda Riley, Angela Petch and Rhys Bowen.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2023Totally enjoyed this trilogy. The stories were woven together like silk threads in a scarf! Graziella was a strong woman who had many friends who helped her through one struggle after another. When I thought about the time in which these stories were told I realized that it was not so long ago. The reality that once you were married, everything you had was suddenly no longer yours but belonged to your husband , he had complete control over everything!
No one took your side for fear of retribution. What a terrible situation to live with! With the help of all her close friends and family her life became very different, and even in a fictional story there was a good ending.
Fortunately many things have improved, but unfortunately, others have still a long way to go.
I would recommend this series of books as well worth the time to read!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2023This book was occasionally confusing with so many characters, it ultimately a wonderful story of friendship and family. I look forward to reading more by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2023I loved this series and was so moved by this final book. Graziella is a fighter and, against all odds, survived the hardship of divorcing an abusive, drunken husband in 1960s Italy and losing all of her money to him. Because of the laws at the time, she is also in danger of losing custody of her daughter, Lucia. It is only through the love and support of her friends, family and neighbors that Graziella maintained custody of her child and provided a home for herself and Lucia and began a new life in her family home in Paradiso.
The characters are real and likeable with the story unfolding smoothly and seamlessly. Italy is so richly drawn that it feels as though the reader is there immersed in the culture.
Though this is a stand alone book, I believe that the reader will find it more rewarding if he/she reads the entire series. I look forward to reading more books by Francesca Scanacapra who is an excellent writer.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2024Everything goes wrong for Graciella on the tree books except having Lucia and a party at Paradiso at the end. Paradiso should be a very special place where lots of happiness happens.
The author is good. i have read other books, but this one is depressing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great mini-saga.
Daughter of Paradiso by Francesca Scanacapra is the last novel of her Paradiso trilogy. It is definitely as good as the other two with one added ingredient : optimism !
It is set in Italy in the fifties and sixties, but not the Italy of Venice, Rome or luxury racing cars ; it’s the Italy of Giovani Guareschi and his Don Camillo : life in a village in the middle of a flat landscape drained by canals and riddled with mosquitoes. We are dealing with ordinary people here. There is even a priest who believes in acting rather than preaching and, like Don Camillo, is not against punching a control freak on the nose…
Graziella’ inheritance is stolen, then frittered away by an utterly selfish moron whose specialty is to ruin other people’s lives.
When that particular problem is solved, we are confronted by the detailed description of a home-made abortion.
The novel is written in the first person, which, as always, brings the reader in close contact with the narrator.
Village life, as in real life, is a succession of ups and downs and, in the end, the ups win out. In spite of mishaps, tragedies and nasty deeds, there is an undeniable feel-good atmosphere which increases as the story unfolds. Generosity wins out over selfishness. It’s invigorating. One cannot help loving it.
The style, as usual with Francesca Scanacapra, is clear, fluid and almost invisible, which is a great quality : we are not aware of it ; it is not “in your face” but it’s extremely effective. It is also evocative. The reader becomes an accomplice of the writer’s feelings and sensations.
One word sticks to mind : unforgettable !

2.0 out of 5 stars Hohum
A long story, of life in a small Italian community, not much happens there except infidelity and abuse. Slow moving, no plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Daughter of Paradiso
Francesca never disappoints! Another book of family, friends and the love shared amongst them despite the traumas they endure along the way. A real page turner!
