"With just the right amount of wit and humour you’d expect from an Ian Slatter novel mixed with a dollop of fancy footwork, Danny Mann Super Fan is a book to get your football-mad children hooked on reading" - The Book Dragon
Danny loves Chadmouth Town Football Club more than anything, but a run of defeats and terrible luck has left them bottom of the table and looking certain to be relegated with time running out.
But then, Danny and his best friend Nelson stumble across a bizarre pre-match ritual that seems to turn their luck around, and his beloved team starts winning again. Is it too little too late though, and can he keep doing everything right before each match, even when he starts finding more and more obstacles in his way and despite the relentless teasing from his classmates? It’s going to come down to the wire.
Does Danny have what it takes to save Chadmouth’s season?
Danny Mann Super Fan is the perfect book for young football / soccer fans (including reluctant readers), and for anyone who’s enjoyed the Charlie Fry or Jamie Johnson series and Tom Palmer’s football books.
Now re-edited and re-published (01/09/2021).

About the author

Ian is the award-winning author of three middle grade fiction books, including the Chadmouth Town football series.
He lives in Somerset with his wife, two children and two crazy black cats and his day-job is far too boring to mention here. He’s also written for the BBC and ITV, for a spoof news website and has published fiction and non-fiction books for adults.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’m reviewing a book for 9-13 year olds about my favorite sport.
Danny’s favorite team, the home team, Chadmouth Town Football Club, is playing poorly and facing relegation. For those who don’t know how the sport works in many countries, relegation is like a death sentence for a sports team. At the end of the season, the teams with the worst records fall into a league below the one they are currently in – and the teams from the league below with the best records come up. It can be extremely challenging for clubs economically. It is a huge loss of revenue.
Danny learns that Chadmouth might not even survive as a club if they are relegated.
Like many sports fans (and players), Danny grows a bit more superstitious on how he can help the club stay up. And enlisting the aide of his friend, Nelson, who is a Liverpool fan, they create a ritual dance to bring the team some good fortune.
Danny customarily attends home matches with his father and grandmother but when grandmother gets ill, Danny brings Nelson. And then in a strange quirk of fate (or luck), the Crabs win the game.
Danny is convinced the ritual dance they performed had something to do with it. Nelson is not so convinced but reluctantly agrees to help Danny as best he can. Danny and Nelson face ridicule at school from the kids who prefer to root for the Big Premier Clubs and not Chadmouth. The ridicule increases when they find out about the ritual dance.
Danny faces several obstacles to his determination to keep doing the rituals that he believes will save the team.
Danny Mann Super Fan is an entertaining story for the young of heart of all ages. Being a Newcastle fan myself, I know the heartache of watching a club that’s constantly battling relegation. The author has done a great job capturing the thoughts, anxieties and joys that go with being a boy who forever remains hopeful.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a very enjoyable read! Fun and lighthearted, it's full of likeable characters and---you got it---football! I purchased this for a little 11 year old football fan and he LOVED it, which says a lot about the engaging nature of this book, as he's not a big reader. But Danny Mann Super Fan is just such a cute story full of positivity that one just can't help but enjoy it. Would definitely recommend for kids 9 and up...especially if they like sports, but I think anyone would enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good book for Reluctant Readers
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen I taught middle-grade students, I found that readers, especially boys, gravitated to books with plenty of action and adventure—and wisecracking too. They hated books that were too long—I’d caught kids checking the page count before choosing a book from the library—and books that had a lot of unnecessary detail. They wanted an interesting plot and likeable characters—of whom they could relate. That was it! Repeatedly, they would choose books like Danny Man Super Fan. Even the title of this novel would appeal to kids, especially kids who’d rather do anything but read.
The book is fast-paced, fun, engaging with many scenes on the football/soccer field. It’s about a diehard fan of the local team, Chadmouth United, which is sinking fast. When the team picks themselves up from the bottom of the league, Danny and his friend Nelson credit the success to the “Lucky Dance,” the boys’ ritual before the game. After all, when something is missing from the ritual, the team gets in trouble.
Although the book could benefit from more proofreading, I think fans wouldn’t notice the minor errors because they would be too busy enjoying the book. Kudos to author Ian Slatter.

5.0 out of 5 stars You don't have to be a kid to love this book
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'm not a kid and I'm not a football fan, but this book is so well written and engaging none of that matters. Young Danny is football mad and without giving too much away, he devises a special ritualistic dance he calls his Lucky Dance that seems to help his team win at each match. All goes swimmingly well, and his friend Nelson is all a part of the ritual. They must eat the same food and wear the same clothes on the day of the dance and match for goals to be guaranteed. They even have to eat pickled onion monster munch and it all goes a bit OCD...but then disaster! Nelson forgets to wear the same underpants one day and the whole future of Danny's team hangs in the balance.
A great little novel for football mad kids. Very humorous and well written.

4.0 out of 5 stars WITTY AND EXCITING
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCharming story centred around young Danny's obsession with his local football team, Chadmouth United, who are at the bottom of the table, and seemingly bound to be relegated. He and his mate Nelson make up a ritual (with chants and dancing) in a vain attempt to construct a 'luck'-dance. And, it seems to work... An amusing series of adventures follows in Danny's quest to rescue his team. The football matches described are full of drama and excitement, and the characters wittily and engagingly drawn. A great read for young football fans.
