About the author

Angela Marsons is the Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author of the DI Kim Stone series and her books have sold more than 5 million in 7 years.
She lives in Worcestershire with her partner and their 2 cheeky Golden Retrievers.
She first discovered her love of writing at Junior School when actual lessons came second to watching other people and quietly making up her own stories about them. Her report card invariably read "Angela would do well if she minded her own business as well as she minds other people's".
After years of writing relationship based stories (The Forgotten Woman and Dear Mother) Angela turned to Crime, fictionally speaking of course, and developed a character that refused to go away.
She is signed to Bookouture.com for a total of 28 books in the Kim Stone series and her books have been translated into 30 languages.
Many of her books, including Blood Lines, Dead Souls, Broken Bones, Fatal Promise and Dead Memories reached the #1 spot on Amazon on pre-orders alone and the translation of Dead Souls, La Verita Sepolte, recently won the prestigious Primo Bancarella award.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2017Ms. Angela Marsons has penned yet another phenomenal thriller in her brilliant DI Kim Stone series. In Dead Souls, book six of the series, she takes us down a very dark road on a most gripping and intense journey with Kim, Bryant, Kev, and Stacey.
Ms. Marsons has tackled a monster of an issue with this one. Hate crimes. Sickening, appalling, and incomprehensible to most of us; a source of twisted debauchery and depravity for the perpetrators. Sadly, this is a most timely subject for what is happening in our world today. Blacks, Jews, Muslims, Asians, LGBTQs, handicapped persons, any type of “foreigners”—all “fair game.”
This time around, Kim and her team are split up due to circumstances beyond Kim’s control. Kim is paired with a former friend, DI Tom Travis. Travis has not been friendly to Kim for the last 4-5 years for reasons unknown to Kim. This makes for a most difficult work situation as they co-lead Tom’s team, which is assigned to look into the discovery of decades old human bones buried in a field. We are privy to their struggles to come to terms with not only the case matter but with each other. I thought the DI Stone/DI Travis thread was terrific. We see Kim not always having the upper hand and how she handles that. This is more about further developing Kim’s character “in the now”, and not so much because of what happened to her as a child. The author does not change Kim’s personality, but at the same time allows Kim personal growth. So very well done.
While their boss is away, DS Bryant and DS Kevin Dawson are teamed up and assigned several assault cases. These two have never worked side by side before and their efforts to mesh with each other are illuminating. And we finally get a major story thread for DC Stacey Wood. Stacey’s backstory now comes to light as we see her trying to deal with lifelong struggles stemming from childhood experiences. She goes “off grid” in this one and finds herself in deep trouble. This “split up” of the team (practically family) could have been disastrous, but Ms. Marsons pulls it off beautifully. We are presented sides of these individuals that have not been evident before, and I found it all very revealing.
The plot has a myriad of threads. We have one assault/murder after another, time and again. To see all these lines come together at the end was remarkable. The early part of the book is loaded with intrigue. Some of the scenes are downright wicked, so less resilient readers beware. The last 30% consists of palpable high wattage suspense that screams, “You will not stop reading till you finish this book!” Whew!! What a ride!!
There is only one thing I wish had been done differently. Though there are some wonderful flashback scenes for a couple of the threads, I would have loved to have had more of Stacey’s younger days played out in full flashback mode (perhaps in future books?) or perhaps some full flashback scenes of the Kim/Travis breakdown that occurred five years previously. A bit more show, less tell in those particular areas.
I don’t want to forget kudos for Ms. Marsons’ research efforts into hate crimes. Chapter 70 in particular was most enlightening. This author does her research as well as anyone.
I think Dead Souls is a real feather in Ms. Marsons’ cap. I see her steadily growing as an author (though she started out pretty darn great five books ago). There is no hint of staleness to the series. I feel confident she will continue to stretch and reach new heights in her writing. In my opinion, Angela Marsons has earned the title of Queen (and King, for that matter) of Thrillers for the last two years. I give her books my highest recommendation.
I love you, Angela. Thank you for giving me so many hours of pure reading pleasure. XO
I would like to thank Net Galley, Bookouture, and Ms. Angela Marsons for the privilege of reading an advanced copy of Dead Souls. Opinions in the above review are mine alone and are not biased in any way.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2018This was a hard read. I like her writing style in most ways, but this one seemed to veer too much and try to get into the headlines more than the story line and I found it disjointed. Hate crimes are a hard sell no matter what format. We ALL try to think we are not racist or that we can not be hateful, but in a way this showed how EVERYONE can be without even realizing it....that hits home for all of us...so it made it very real work.
I did not like the "italics" portions of the book. It was hard to comprehend why it was there until too far into the book and then I did not see where it added anything because it was not a good part of the story, more of a distraction to me.
SPOILERS...
I did not feel the breakup of her team was believable at all. AND while she solves cases, it is starting to feel repetitive and redundant as to her attitude to people. There were times here that her breaking did not suit what we have been made to feel her character is at all. THAT SAID, I do like her becoming a tad more human.....while people have bad childhoods, living in the real world with real people day in and day out you can not help but become a PERSON along the way and not a robot so I like that the author is showing her growth...it helps to stay with a character when we see and feel positive with there and I like her more each book. This was just played too much to fit the story line and not to fit the characters.
I also forgot to mention early on in reviewing her books - since I have read all so far - that the TOKEN gay and a black gay character disappointed me early on....too much like trying to be politically correct out there with a lead BLACK character but oh yeah and lets make her gay too...so now all bases are covered. Could have just been yet another strong and smart female black cop...
It seemed out of character for Stacy to run amok like she did...she was already thrown out into the field more than once so her seeming to suddenly feel she had to PROVE something was just to pat to fit the story the author wanted to tell...did not feel smoothly incorporated, more like messed up Stacy to fit where she needed the story to go.
I can not say exactly what is so great with the story lines, how they are written, the characters etc, but her writing STYLE just grabs from the get go and you come to love the quirky twists and turns.
I hope it continues along a good line because this one has me feeling more iffy...but onto book 7

4.0 out of 5 stars Dinâmica diferente na narrativa e nos personagens.

Such a disturbing topic, yet it must be explored. One would think that racism was overcome years ago, but it has quietly, behind the scenes, been steadily intensifying. I was riveted by the subject of the investigation in Kim's lastest (mis)adventures. I felt as though I learned much as I was relaxing with an excellent book. Anticipation increases for each subsequent thriller from Ms. Marsons. She is very much in-tune with her readers, and finds a variety of subject matters to be investigated by her engaging team of detectives. I now feel as though they are part of my sordid family members and would welcome each one of them to a Sunday night dinner at my home.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another DI Kim Stone thriller
I've loved the first 5 in this series of novels from Angela Marsons but this the 6th was a little disappointing. There was just something missing. It's still a good read but not up to the previous standards. I look forward to number 7 hoping it's as good as the first 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm definitely a fan!
Great story, well written and on the top of what's going on worldwide. Sad reality shown as a fiction in a gripping plot. Looking forward to the 7th book. Kim appeared under another light here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dead Souls
Really Good, probably the best of the six books in the Kim Stone saga which I strongly advise the detective story fans to enjoy
