The Dead of Jerusalem Ridge: A Piper Blackwell Mystery Kindle Edition
"Piper Blackwell is a smart and capable small-town sheriff, a thoroughly modern woman who leads a colorful cast of characters in this entertaining read. Well-crafted and suspenseful, THE DEAD OF JERUSALEM RIDGE adroitly threads the needle between Cozy, Procedural, and Action-Thriller. Jean Rabe's fans⸺both old and new⸺won't want to miss this one.⸺ Baron R. Birtcher, multi-award winner, and LA Times Bestselling author
“Rabe once again mixes the most colorful parts of a cozy mystery with the grittiness of suspense in THE DEAD OF JERUSALEM RIDGE, launching Piper Blackwell into the most personal, and potentially heartbreaking, intrigue of her career. Don’t start this story if you need to be up early the next morning!”⸺Janet Walden-West, GRW Maggie winner and author of The South Beach series
“Jean Rabe weaves a deceptively staid tempo of a tale in this new Sheriff Piper Blackwell novel that barrels into a starkly taut murder mystery. The main plot, supported by a riveting subplot, is masterly crafted with an intriguing cast of characters, a unique setting, and an ending that feels like a double sucker punch!”⸺Khaled Talib, author of the highly praised thriller, Gun Kiss
THE DEAD OF JERUSALEM RIDGE had me hooked from page 1. The characters were so real it felt like they could walk right off the page. Warning, once you start it’s next to impossible to stop reading until you reach the perfectly-crafted ending.⸺Angela Crook, author of Fat Chance and Chasing Navah

About the author

My home is filled with dogs and books. Lots of dogs and books. I am surrounded by both as I type this.
I wear twenty-some-year-old sandals or fraying tennis shoes to work everyday, and my wardrobe is often convention t-shirts or Green Bay Packer sweats.
I'm a mystery writer living in a tiny Midwestern town that has a gas station, a Dollar General, and a marvelous pizza place with exceedingly slow service.
Always working on a new project or three.
I have more than fifty books published in the fantasy, science fiction, urban fantasy and mystery genres, and more than one hundred short stories. I've lost count of the number of anthologies and magazine issues I've edited. Yeah, I've been around a while.
I'm concentrating on writing mysteries now and have a series set in Spencer County, Indiana. Piper Blackwell.
In my spare time I dabble in roleplaying games and boardgames, toss tennis balls for my cadre of dogs, and attempt to put a dent in my to-be-read stack of novels.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2020The Dead of Jerusalem Ridge is the fourth installment in award-winning author Jean Rabe’s fantastic Piper Blackwell series, and it hits its mark squarely.
The series follows the efforts of the young and inexperienced, but very capable, rural sheriff, Piper Blackwell, and her impressive team as they go about solving gruesome crimes. The action, which rarely slows for the reader to catch a breath, is at times heart-stopping and jaw-dropping.
The series is populated by rich, multi-dimensional, and sometimes quirky characters so well written that the reader will feel as if they could strike up a conversation with them. Readers will never suffer a two-dimensional, cardboard cutout character in one of Rabe’s books, and it is her inclusion of details from both the professional and personal lives of her characters that makes them feel so real. Rabe’s meticulous eye for detail, and her use of language that sings, brings the rural settings to life as well.
As The Dead of Jerusalem Ridge opens, main character Piper is taking a few days off to enjoy the company of some old army buddies and engage in the extreme sport of paintball in the eponymous Jerusalem Ridge, Kentucky. As often happens in Piper’s life, things go wrong . . . horribly wrong. The young sheriff finds herself in the middle of a mystery while dealing with serious injury and tragic personal loss.
Upon her return to the rural Indiana county where she lives and works, Piper finds her department investigating a hate crime which is dividing the usually close-knit community . . . a hate crime that takes a deadly turn. Piper immerses herself in both investigations while trying to recover from her injuries and deal with events in her personal life.
The pacing of the story, with its various twists and turns along the way, will keep the reader on the edge of their seat. The details of the crimes will draw the reader into trying to solve the mysteries of whodunit and why. The Dead of Jerusalem Ridge, like all Jean Rabe’s Piper Blackwell books, is a wonderful weave of cozy mystery, police procedural, and suspense. And the ending delivers a delightful surprise.
I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2020The very day THE DEAD OF JERUSALEM RIDGE came out, author Jean Rabe was awarded the title of GRAND MASTER by the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers for a lifetime of writing great tie-in books. So, it's not surprise she's written a lot of great books in famous properties such as DRAGONLANCE and ROGUE ANGEL and many more.
I'm here to tell you her work on her own Piper Blackwell series is probably EVEN BETTER!
This is the fourth book in the series and the best, which is saying a lot considering how good the previous three are. The characters are bright, lively, and deep. The settings are richly detailed, well researched, and convincing. The mysteries (because there's more than one) are intriguing and satisfyingly paid off. And the writing? Well, Jean is a GRAND MASTER now, so you know the writing is top notch!
I read at bedtime, and this mystery kept me up WAY too late every night until I was finished (which because it was a fast read, wasn't very long). Once I started, I couldn't put the book down -- and I think you'll find it just as thrilling, whether you're a first-time reader or a return visitor to the world of Sheriff Piper Blackwell and her officers, friends, and foes. Jump right in, the action, suspense, and yes, murder, are just fine!
The only trouble I had with this book is that now that I'm done reading it, I have to wait until Jean Rabe writes another Piper Blackwell mystery. Hopefully, that wait won't be very long!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2022A master storyteller, Jean Rabe hits all the marks in Dead of Jerusalem Ridge. From a tight, page-turning storyline, to memorable characters, Rabe creates spellbinding mysteries in Spencer County, Indiana.
Sheriff Piper Blackwell was elected sheriff after leaving the military when her dad was forced to resign due to illness. Five books later, she’s, unfortunately, still gaining experience through a series of gruesome murder mysteries in rural Southern Indiana. She thought a short vacation with some army buddies would be a nice diversion. Not so. Mystery and crime follows deep into the woods. Add a hate crime and Piper must forego any hope of relaxation.
While the author’s previous residence near the series setting creates an advantage, her writing puts the reader smack-dab into neighboring towns and rolling countryside.
I’ve read every Piper Blackwell mysteries and enjoyed them from start to finish. You won’t find more engaging characters, and perfectly paced story, anywhere. I’m SO looking forward to the next book!
Mary Cunningham, mystery author
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2020What can I say? The Piper Blackwell series is one of my "must buy as soon as a new title comes out". Ms. Rabe hooked me with the first book in the series, presenting lead characters who are human and relatable. Piper is not only young and capable, she is vulnerable and fallible. In other words, while she can be kick-ass when necessary, she also doubts herself and what she's doing from time to time. That makes her more relatable than so many othe characters today.
This book presents Piper with her greatest challenge since the series' start: survivor's guilt. Why is she alive when her friends aren't? Add in the death of a local troublemaker that might or might not be suicide as well as a growing romance tha scares her a little and she has her hands full.
If you are looking for a book or a series where you have good mystery, solid characters and really good character growth and development, try this series out. As another reviewer said, each book is "the best" until the next book comes out. The Dead of Jerusalem Ridge deserves six-stars, but Amazon limits me to five.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2024It's getting to the point that I don't want these books to end. I haven't read this much this short a span in a long time. I can't wait to read the next one.
