Dead Lake (Tricky's Tales Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

An eviction. A stolen object. A hidden network. Will retrieving her precious gemstone get Tricky killed?

Sometimes it pays to be Tricky

Damn and blast! Tricky's been kicked out of the district, thanks to that scheming, pompous, turd, Carter!

Tricky returns to her cottage to find it turned upside down. An action called ransacking that means she has three days to leave or face punishment. Randolf Carter, head of the district, is spreading lies and suspicion about her kind, making life difficult. But it wasn’t just an ordinary ransacking – they were searching for something.

Using her gifts, Tricky traces the energy left by the men and spies another creature’s among it: a jackdaw. Swift and wily, it’s pinched her precious gemstone, a piece of black obsidian. But at whose bidding? Communicating with birds is a rare ability and she knows all who possess it.

Tricky wants her stone back, but coming up against Carter and his corrupt network won’t be easy, especially when he’s got one of her kind in his employ. But she’ll handle it, oh yes she will. She'll just have to be careful and a little bit tricky. Good thing she is then, isn’t it?

Tricky is lured into something bigger than ownership of a gemstone, unearthing her mother’s murderers and putting her own life at risk. To survive she’s going to have to remember that sometimes it pays to be a little bit tricky.

Dead Lake is the first book in a new thrilling paranormal fantasy series, set a few hundred years from now in a post-apocalyptic world. For fans of new-age witches, strong female characters and dark dealings in a dystopian world, Tricky’s high-pace adventures will capture the imagination.

"Miranda Kate has crafted a thoroughly believable magical world, and a protagonist that you'll want to be your best mate." Michael Wombat, Author of The Raven's Wing

"You'll be bewitched and beguiled by Tricky and left wanting to spend more time with her. An elemental, paranormal fantasy with bite and attitude. I can't wait for more." Lisa Shambrook, Author of The Seren Stone Chronicles

Review

Tricky is sassy, intriguing, and brazen, and when she's ransacked out of her home and out of her town, she won't take it sitting down. She realises one of her precious belongings is missing and she'll do everything to hunt it down and get it back, no matter who gets in her way.

Dead Lake, which I was privileged to read as an advance copy, see's its protagonist move through its flora and fauna with natural ease and at a pace that kept me riveted. There's energy and a feisty spirit to the author's writing that makes you want to run through the mossy pines with Tricky and be part of her story as she fights to clear her name. She fits perfectly into this magical world, which let me escape and slip into a great read.

You'll be bewitched and beguiled by Tricky and left wanting to spend more time with her. An elemental fantasy with bite and attitude, and I can't wait for more. - Lisa Shambrook, Author of The Seren Stone Chronicles

    I like this one!
It has a very intriguing blend of past and future in the backdrop of some sort of widespread disaster. Or some kind of large event that sets about a reordering of society where the catalyst takes us forward to a sort of feudal type society in place of a dystopian bleak vision. The author doesn't really talk too much about it . It was only eluded to in places where it became a plot point of something that lingered on the minds of the characters.
I thought that was a great touch because it presented a vision for a sort of do over. Amid this there is a witch who is caught in a well built web of power struggles as the local political scene has produced a man with a lust for more power and ambition. This is the character known as Carter and he doesn't have any sort of moral limit to the lengths he will go to to achieve and hold on to that power.
Our main character is a witch named Tricky who has no real political power of her own, or any ambition to that end. She is just trying to survive it but has her abilities and her wits to survive as the noose obviously tightens around her neck as the story progresses.
What I really liked were the private agendas of the characters. Probably very true to life, each person had their own motivations and each one played a part in the twists and subterfuge that leads to, what was for me, an unexpected outcome.
I'm hoping there will be more of this.

A very compelling read! Set in a time hundreds of years after an apocalypse,Tricky is a witch with great powers. She makes the story exciting with just enough sexual innuendo to keep you wondering what will happen next! You’ll be waiting for Book 2 before you finish this! I don’t want the story to end!

I read this book with some iffy feelings about it because it wasn’t a genre that I would normally read. I am so glad that I read it!!! I loved the story line and how alive the characters were for me. I highly recommend this book even if it is not your normal genre.

The story line is simple. What it takes to tell it is a vivid imagination. What an adventure it is!
I love all the little details that make Tricky come to life. She will forever be one of my most favorite heroines.

If you like fantasy novels you will love Dead Lake! It’s about a witch named ‘Tricky’ who deals in energies and treasures, set in a futuristic world. The thing I love about fantasy is the ability to escape, and you will definitely do that with Tricky!
