The Dead of Sled Run: A Piper Blackwell Mystery Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 67 ratings

It is almost Christmas and yards glow with twinkling lights.
But more than chestnuts are roasting.

A raging fire sweeps through the decorated landscape of Sled Run, destroying the home of Chief Deputy Oren Rosenberg and killing two.

An accident? Or did something toxic fuel the flames?

Sheriff Piper Blackwell and Detective Basil Meredith believe Oren was targeted and are tasked with finding motive and means before more than the holiday burns bright.

With many clues reduced to ashes, can Piper and Basil catch the culprits before they strike again? Or is this blaze just the start of the most murder-filled time of the year?

Jean Rabe returns with another installment in her highly addictive Piper Blackwell series. As masterfully plotted as the previous five volumes, THE DEAD OF SLED RUN is a compelling page-turner that opens with a harrowing scene sure to have readers on the edge of their seats, and only escalates from there. The only flaw I can find in Rabe’s mysteries is they are over too soon, but that’s my fault for being unable to put the book down.” —Brian A. Hopkins, Four-time Bram Stoker Award Winning Author

My home is filled with dogs and books. Lots of dogs and books. I am surrounded by both as I type this.

I wear twenty-some-year-old sandals or fraying tennis shoes to work everyday, and my wardrobe is often convention t-shirts or Green Bay Packer sweats.

I'm a mystery writer living in a tiny Midwestern town that has a gas station, a Dollar General, and a marvelous pizza place with exceedingly slow service.

Always working on a new project or three.

I have more than fifty books published in the fantasy, science fiction, urban fantasy and mystery genres, and more than one hundred short stories. I've lost count of the number of anthologies and magazine issues I've edited. Yeah, I've been around a while.

I'm concentrating on writing mysteries now and have a series set in Spencer County, Indiana. Piper Blackwell.

In my spare time I dabble in roleplaying games and boardgames, toss tennis balls for my cadre of dogs, and attempt to put a dent in my to-be-read stack of novels.

I have loved this Piper Blackwell series by Jean Rabe. Her newest, "The Dead of Sled Run" did not disappoint. I may have stayed up too late for a couple nights to keep reading. (until my eyes closed on me)
Her characters are well described and you can picture them in your mind. Like some characters in the book, i too have moved from the big city to rural small town. She gets that spot on. Fast paced, well written, I can't wait for the next one! There is going to be a next , right Jean?

Jean Rabe;s The Dead of Sled Run has one of the best opening chapters I've ever read. And the suspense is maintained throughout the book. This is number six in Rabe's Piper Blackwell series and with it she delivers another outstanding entry to the series. The book is both a mystery and police procedural populated by realistic characters that you'll find yourself rooting for as they search for a serial arsonist and killer during the Christmas season in Santa Claus, Indiana. I was amazed at how accurately she portrays the police work and procedures, and, as I said, the characters are so real they practically jump off the page. The book has that "can't put it down" quality.

The Dead of Sled Run is the sixth book in the Piper Blackwell series by noted author Jean Rabe. It is the sixth time I have finished a Piper Blackwell book and immediately wanted to read the next one. I hope Rabe is working on number seven already, because I can’t wait!

As with the first five books in this series, Rabe has fashioned real characters with real emotions, real motives, real strengths, real foibles; there’s never a two-dimensional cardboard cutout in the bunch.

Rabe has also created so much tension and suspense in the book that it practically explodes off the page. To say this book is a page-turner would be an understatement.

Kudos to Rabe for a fantastic read, and here’s hoping for many, many more.

Jean Rabe’s The Dead of Sled Run is my first Piper Blackwell Mystery. It is a gripping police procedural set during the holiday season. While I might have missed something in terms of character development, I had no issue jumping into this sixth book in the series. I appreciated the setting in rural America, the red-herrings from the author and the perpetrator, and the characterization made me want to meet these “people”.

Jean Rabe writes a good police procedural mystery. She is a storyteller who I will be following and reading more of her books.

This is #6 of 6 Piper Blackwell mysteries, and the best one yet. If you haven't discovered this series, or anything else Jean writes, start now! After the first 5, I knew I had to block out a good part of my day to read this from cover to cover. The characters are so real, so deep, and the action sneaks up on you almost without warning. Her books are also very easy to read - there's a comfort level here that I promptly lose when I'm struck by another surprise or well-turned phrase. I'll never look at snow hitting my windshield the same way again. What does that mean? Read this and find out!

I love Piper Blackwell. I have known her since Jean brought her to life. SLED RUN breathes life into her and excitement into her department and staff. Jean paints great characters with the eye of an artist. It is clear in this work that her attention to detail is one of her keys to success.

I love her work and this possibly best. I was driven to complete it quickly because I wanted to know. I almost sent an email at 3AM to whine about a detail.

So let Piper, Nang, Paul, Oren, Millie, Basil, Tug and even the K9 bring you some honor and laughter.

    FRUITCAKE can be great.

The Piper Blackwell mysteries are SO good, and so much fun. I have all of them and am looking forward to the next one. These books are interesting for adults, and appropriate for teens (little or no language, sex, etc) And if you are familiar with the area the stories are set in, as I am, the vivid scenes unfold before your eyes. I thoroughly enjoyed each of the Piper books, and hope the author keeps churning them out.

This mystery keeps you guessing till the last minute. It is well written and the action keeps going. I really enjoyed it. Don’t start reading it late at night or you will stay up to finish reading it and figure out “who done it”.

5.0 out of 5 stars It been quite a year for Sherriff Piper Blackwell and she hasn't yet reached her first anniversary.

Piper Blackwell the 24 year old Sheriff of Spencer County Indiana is after an arsonist in days leading up to Christmas, and the compelling opening simply grabs the reader.

As with the previous books there is great sense of place (the descriptions of the locations and the weather, the various holiday songs playing in the background, scents of the various foods, and the unique Christmas decorations) - it feels very real. There is a wonderful cast of returning characters that are so well developed through the previous stories. Several of the characters are further fleshed out as are the interrelationships between them.

The story maintains a great pace and has a frantic and suspenseful conclusion.
