Deadly Thanksgiving: Hilarious & Heartwarming Romantic Cozy Mystery with Animals and Senior Sleuths Kindle Edition
“I had a number of laugh-out-loud moments and once actually, truly, spit out some tea.”
“Loved your scenic descriptions, I felt I was at the lodge, the places you described were familiar.”
Hi, I’m Clara Foster, events manager at Alberta’s Grizzly Gulch Guest Ranch. My two sisters and I inherited the property at an age when most sensible women contemplated retirement. No one ever called us sensible.
Due to a rogue summer tornado, the only way to avoid bankruptcy was to win a lucrative hospitality contest. Too bad a coachload of geriatric guests, one of them a corpse and another our family drama queen, cousin Minnie, launched our Thanksgiving event off to a shaky start.
It soon became apparent that the cause of death was poison. Everyone on board the mini-coach had a motive, especially Minnie. Worse, the Mountie assigned to the case was an old boyfriend I’d dumped via text message (not my proudest moment). To compound matters, this was our second murder of the year. Our slogan should be, “Try Grizzly Gulch getaways—they’re to die for.” If our guests learned of another murder, we might as well file for bankruptcy.
Tensions mounted when several “accidents” nearly took out Minnie.
The only way to smoke out the killer was for me to join forces—and possibly a whole lot more—with my ex, while hiding the murder and attempted murders from our guests.
Enjoy non-stop action with a perilous nature walk, a Lothario wannabe, a messy goat yoga catastrophe, a mechanical bull incident, a kidnapping, and an attack-cat named Snuggles, a frustrating power outage, all culminating in a memorable Thanksgiving feast our guests are unlikely to forget.
Warning: This book may contain nuggets of naughty boomer humor.

About the author

I'm an author of funny & furry adventures & misadventures, guaranteed to tickle the funny bone, lift the spirits, & warm the heart! All my books contain characters you can relate to, an animal or two, and always romance of varying quantities and heat levels along with tons of humor. As Charlie Chaplin once said, “A day without humor is a day wasted.”
Transplanted from Scotland to Canada at the tender age of seven, I'm a voracious reader, community volunteer, bridge player, yoga enthusiast, seeker of personal and spiritual growth, pickleball enthusiast, and infrequent but avid gourmet cook. As an escapee from the I.T. arena, I love to hike, bike, and travel, mostly with my husband and, occasionally, alone. I have swum with sharks in the Galapagos, walked with Bushmen in the Serengeti, sampled lamb criadillas (don’t ask!!!) in Iguazu Falls, snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef, ridden an elephant in Thailand, watched the sun rise over Machu Picchu, and bounced from Johannesburg to Cape Town on a bus called ‘Marula’.
Some quotes:
“You are a great writer, scratch that you are phenomenal. The way you have projected each and every character is remarkable. Vivid description make you visualize the book like a movie. For me it’s a must read. And yes, last but not the least, I will surely buy your other books after I finish my exams.”
"Maureen combines action, adventure, romance, mystery, and an often LOL sense of humor in her page-turning novels. They are the perfect additions to your electronic libraries, like da rum and da coconut in your piña coladas."

and her sisters
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2022Format: KindleVery cute read. Lots of humor and sarcasm which I loved. The match ups and the love hungry residents coming from Lifestyle Manor make for some interesting tete-a-tetes. Nonetheless this is as clean as can be.
Author Maureen Fisher made me feel as if I were there participating in goat yoga, on a hike, or even living in a rather rustic atmosphere at Grizzly Gulch. She didn’t just make me feel I was there; she made me wish I was there having fun. I even enjoyed the new temperamental Chef Armand and his showy culinary delights. I especially enjoyed his alternative choices for a dark Thanksgiving.
A light but very enjoyable read.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen it comes to reading cozy mysteries I must admit that I am very fussy. The majority of them I don't like at all. But this one I had absolutely loved!! The writing style is just the perfect mix of action, zany characters, humor plus animals. Plus there were enough clues for me to correctly guess who the killer was too! I actually figured it out a tad early and nothing is better than the satisfaction of knowing you had guessed correctly.
This story takes place on a dude ranch. I haven't read the first book in this series yet but instead jumped right into this one because of the Thanksgiving theme. Yes, today is Thanksgiving. But the book features a Canadian Thanksgiving that seems to be in October? Anyway it still involves cooking turkey.
I must say the opening of this book, when the sisters were first introduced, had confused me. Because of how they were dressed. One was wearing a pant suit. The other some dress with high heels. I certainly never heard of anyone having a horse ranch dressing like that... Just sounds bizarre! Who is going to be going out into the pasture or into the stables in high heel shoes?! Or into mud?? But these sisters are more into running a hotel. Horses are only very briefly mentioned in here. Now goats and one particular llama play a much bigger role.
What I really loved about this one is the plot is constantly moving. Other cozy mysteries have huge sections of just socialising - chapters of just talk where virtually nothing happens. This book does not have that. Yes, the characters talk but there is action too. Lots of action. There are scary scenes with murder attempts and there are zany scenes as well. The stuff with the goat yoga is outrageous!! The book has the characters facing one problem after another. Its always something going on. Plus there is a bull too!
I will definitely have to check out more books from this author. Its just the perfect combination of the things I love in a cozy mystery.
Very glad I picked this one up!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLooked forward to this book after enjoying the lst one and was certainly not disappointed! A cousin added to the story was brilliant with all of her charms and outspoken ways! This story will have you guessing to the end. Hope there will be a 3rd book and more!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2022Format: KindleI truly enjoyed this book. The suspense mixed with humor was a great combination. I loved Clara and Hawk's rekindled relationship. Clara and Minnie made a great pair of sleuths. And who could forget Snuggles. I was so happy to see that everything worked out for Clara in the end. Looking forward to reading another book by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this book. Set in Canada, Maureen Fisher's "Deadly Thanksgiving" offers up both some serious moments and fast-paced action and humor. I mean, an attack cat named Snuggles? A rogue goat during a goat yoga class, a guard llama, a drunker wannabe beau who shows up in only a robe one night, power outages, raucous guests, murderous guests, and, oh, yeah, one particularly hunky retired Mountie are just part of the fun. We learn more about Carla and her sisters, however, that isn't so much fun, including Carla's abusive father and physically abusive former husband. Kudos to Fisher for tackling such events in an otherwise relatively hilarious book. As a result, we get to see Carla's growth and slow acceptance of ex-Mountie Hawk's efforts to break down the barriers she's erected for self-protection. He has his own ghosts, of course, that color his behavior.
Yet, it's the humor and fast paced action that dominate "Deadly Thanksgiving". Guest Roland's wannabe Lothario is an early example and things only pick up from there. Bottom line, if you love humor with a touch of seriousness, seriousness that doesn't disrupt the good feeling, give "Deadly Thanksgiving" a read. It put a smile on my face.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMy my things do get crazy on the ranch. The girls have inherited the ranch and work to keep it running, but that isn't easy with murder in the background.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a great romp, A bus of seniors arrives at Grizzly Gulch with only one dead body! Whatever can go wrong does times two or three. Add an old love and Clara, the youngest of the three sisters has more than anyone needs to handle. As an older woman, I can absolutely place myself in Clara's place, trying to do her best to save their business and wrangle a wild cast of characters. A unique, thrilling, fun read.

3.0 out of 5 stars The story is good
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe story itself is quite good. I also like the protagonists. I have some problems with Clara though, as she really behaves rather silly sometimes and more than a teenager than a woman of 60+. Whenever she comes near Hawk, she has to tell how weak and lusty she feels and how she would like to have sex with him. Puleeeeaaaase! This woman is not a teenager, she is 60+. Also I just don't seem to get the "American" (or Canadian) humor. For me it is just not so funny, if somebody behaves silly, embarrassing or like a spoilt child. It doesn't make me laugh out loud. So, yes, I miss the dry and witty British humor here. That said, I quite enjoyed the story, as it was different from other cozy mysteries, although there are too many jealous and criminal women around.
