Review

Susan Sewell - Readers FavouriteDeath on Tyneside (Agnes Lockwood Mysteries Book 2) by Eileen Thornton is an irresistible sleuth murder mystery set on the banks of the River Tyne in Newcastle, England. With memorable characters and an intriguing plot, the story is composed in a competent and entertaining style, which captures and maintains the reader's interest from start to finish. The protagonist, Agnes Lockwood, is a fan of Agatha Christie, and as such, does a superb job following in the footsteps of the great writer's famous character, Miss Marple. Like her heroine, Agnes uses her keen sense of awareness and observations to answer the age-old question of "whodunit?" This is a delightful murder mystery and if you are a fan of Ms. Christie, you will not be able to resist this riveting novel!

From the Author

I was so pleased with the way the character, Agnes Lockwood, played outin my novel Murder on Tyneside, I felt I needed to give her another case towork on. Well, I think she insisted if the truth is known.
Now she is back on Tyneside afterspending a few months with her sons in Australia. It is while she is taking astroll through a local park on the day of her return that she finds a body halfhidden in some bushes. Naturally, after reporting it to the police, she wantsto be involved in the investigation. However, DCI Alan Johnson, who has alwaysloved her since they were at school together, is not so keen - especially asshe was very nearly murdered a few months earlier. Nevertheless, Agnes is awoman you can't keep down and she is as determined as ever to be included inthe inquiry - despite his strong opposition.
Again, I have included somelandmarks of the Tyneside area into the tale. I couldn't resist doing that, as theywhisk me back through the years to when I was growing up. Besides, anyone wholived in the area, but now lives further afield might like being reminded oftheir past.
Yet, at the end of the day, neverforget, the story is really about Agnes Lockwood and how alert andstrong-minded a woman she is.

Though I now live in Kelso in the Scottish Borders, I was born and brought up on Tyneside; the setting for my last four novels. Once a Geordie, always a Geordie, as the saying goes.

Though I only began writing in 2001, many of my short stories and articles have been published in national magazines here in the UK. But then I felt the urge to move on and write something with a little more grit.

My first novel, The Trojan Project, is an all-action thriller. During the writing process, I felt I was on the ride of my life, as I added so many spine-chilling incidents. I was determined to grab the readers' attention from the very beginning and give them the roller-coaster read of their lives.

Since then, I turned to writing women's fiction. Divorcees.Biz, a novel of fun and romance, shortly followed by, Only Twelve Days, a heart-warming romance.

However, after deciding to turn my hand to writing a series of cozy murder mysteries, I chose my hometown as the setting. Murder on Tyneside - Agnes Lockwood Mysteries Book 1, was released in December 2016, with Agnes as the new sleuth on Tyneside. Death on Tyneside (Book 2) came next followed by Vengeance on Tyneside (Book 3). A Mystery on Tyneside (Book 4) was published in October 2020.

Hopefully, there will be a Book 5 in the series. How could I possibly let Agnes Lockwood down, when she has given me so much fun - she is part of me now.

Twists and turns that will keep you guessing--a definitely fun read!
Agnes only came back to Tyneside because she really likes Alan---with all the hoopla that went on in Murder in Tyneside (see my review here) --it is hard to tell if he likes her-- Agnes Lockwood is a corpse magnet--no doubt about it. Alan Johnson with the Newcastle police force is forever trying to get her to get her nose out of all this dangerous business--but she is having none of it. And besides--this time it gets personal!! Twists and turns that will keep you guessing--a definitely fun read! Will there be a third in this series--the ending makes it seem like there might be--I hope so.

Visiting her sons and missing Alan, she returns earlier than planned. Alan has been busy being a DCI and wondering if she was returning or not. A stroll thru her park, she remembers as a child, the birds caught her attention as well as a body. She already became known from her late visit and what happened. The.clues are missing so it seems, how will she figure it out, She told Alan what she thought of him, and completely surprised him. Another enjoyable story to figure out.

Agnes returns to Tyneside only to stumble across another dead body. This time, not only is she in some danger when she thrusts herself into the investigation, but she is also threatened by a person who unsettles her memory of her father. As with many cozy mysteries, the characters and the setting are what hold the reader. Ms. Thornton's characters have an appealing quality from DCI Johnson's concern about the growth and safety of his officers and Agnes's stubbornness about being part of the investigation. At the same time, they are charmingly hesitant about revealing their feelings about each other.
If you enjoy light-hearted mysteries, you will enjoy the Tyneside series. This book would have benefited from a more thorough editing, but it is still an enjoyable read. Here's to more Tyneside mysteries!

This was an intriguing mystery, which started with the finding of a mutilated body in a park. While the detectives are working on the case, a second body is found in the same condition. With very few clues, the detectives flounder until a girlfriend of the chief inspector notes a few similarities in the cases. She herself is being hounded by a couple who insist she is related to them through her father and want a share of the business she inherited from him. The cases are at a standstill until the girlfriend starts putting some thoughts together. It is a tense story which takes the efforts of the whole police department to stop further killings and to find the perpetrators. Good book!

This is the author's second iteration of the Agnes Lockwood mysteries. In this book she returns from a visit to Australia where she spent time with her sons only to become embroiled in another murder mystery. Two bodies have surfaced and Agnes is the subject of a scam trying to take her business away from her. I will tell you no more. If you wish more you must read this wonderful book.
Eileen Thornton is a consummate English Storyteller. She weaves a tale of murder and intrigue as though knitting a sweater. Each stroke of her computer keys creates a wonderful, believable character, or a scenario resulting foul play. Her books are always immaculate and well presented. The story she tells is always filled with unanticipated twists and turns, some you never discover until the last few pages, if then. Read this book. It is well worth the time and the money.

I just finished reading both books in this series and can hardly wait for the next. Agnes Lockwood is a delightful, real character. She gets ideas (both good and bad) and drives the DCI crazy. If you enjoy British mysteries and especially if you are a fan of the amateur sleuth character, this is the one for you! Well done! Enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting, satisfying murder mystery!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 18, 2018
I love a ‘cosy crime’ novel and, having read and thoroughly enjoyed Murder on Tyneside, Eileen Thornton’s previous book, I was keen to read her new one to see if it matched up. I can honestly say that it does, in every way. Her heroine, Agnes Lockwood, is a strong, stubborn, feisty, but lovable character who just can’t seem to help being on the spot wherever a murder has been committed. And in Death on Tyneside, the bodies soon start piling up.
In the first book, Agnes was making a nostalgia trip to her old home town of Newcastle following the death of her husband when she met an old school friend from the past, Alan Johnson, now a Detective Chief Inspector with the Newcastle police force. This time, she has just returned from a visit to her sons in Australia and is facing a life-changing decision – whether or not to leave England and move close to her family – so she is back in Newcastle, trying to make her mind up; not an easy task when she is also falling for Alan, much against her will.
Having booked into her favourite hotel and agreed to a dinner date with Alan that evening, she goes for a walk in the park where she used to play as a child and there she stumbles across the first body. Almost immediately, she is flung into conflict with Alan, who not only wants her to stay safe when there is a sadistic murderer on the loose, but also wants her to keep out of his investigation.
Of course, Agnes can’t help meddling and this adds to the tension of the book, especially when Body No. 2 turns up, mutilated in a similar fashion to the previous one. Then, when a mysterious man approaches Agnes with an outlandish claim that rocks Agnes’s view of her past, we are all set for a thrilling mystery that unravels towards a slightly enigmatic but ultimately satisfying climax.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Enjoyable Read.

Anges Lockwood made a visit to see her two son's in Australia. She ends her trip earlier as she's wanting to get back to Tyneside because she realizes how much she misses DCI Alan Johnson, more than she ever thought she could. On arriving back, she decides to take the walk through the park that she didn't get time to do last time, due to her help with an investigation she was involved in.
On her walk she notices birds hovering around bushes. It's here the story starts to take off with Anges finding the mutilated boady of a man. Now its up to Alan to make sure, his new found love with Anges is kept safe and out of the investigation. But this time Anges has more thinking to do, expecially when it turns out the case has a lot to do with her.
I really enjoyed this second book as much as the first one. Now I'm on to the third one.
    A recommended read.

Agnes Lockwood returns to the Millenium Hotel in Tyneside, her childhood home, after visiting her sons in Australia. While she was supposed to stay in Australia a few weeks longer she cuts her trip short. Tyneside has a hold on her and besides, she misses Alan. It was only a few short months ago, that she helped Alan, the detective chief inspector, solve a murder, a string of robberies, and was almost killed in the process. But on her first day back in town, Agnes makes a gruesome discovery while visiting the city park. She’s stumbled across a body, and it looks like Agnes once again finds herself in the middle of a crime scene.

I quite enjoyed this 2nd book of the Agnes Lockwood Mysteries by Eileen Thornton. The mystery was interesting and the twist near the end definitely caught me by surprise. I found both Agnes and Alan endearing. The author did a great job showing the chemistry between them as well as the duplicitous nature of the villains.

If you like straightforward mysteries with unsuspecting twists, you’ll enjoy Death on Tyneside

The plot certainly kept me turning the pages. Plenty of suspense in a Miss Marples way, with a civilian woman, Agnes Lockwood, caught up with the investigation of a series of unsolved murders, insisting that she be kept on board with her Detective friend’s enquiries. Newcastle is a great setting for this ‘cosy’ mystery. My one piece of advice to Eileen would be to not have characters continually call others by name when only two are conversing. A good plot, with no swear words, makes me recommend this book as an enjoyable and suspenseful clean read.
