Discovery: Razor-Sharp Urban Fantasy Blurs the Lines Between Conspiracy and Reality (D Notice Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

The gods, witches and politicians all enjoyed the daily tug-of-war for control. In a world of constant scheming and manoeuvring, until their peaceful world of ruining each other’s day was truly disrupted.

What if it was all just a distraction, keeping everyone busy until
They came back home again?

At the urging of her beloved grandmother, Cassie takes an apparently safe and humdrum job in a government office in Glasgow. However, it turns out the conspiracy theorists are right, and there’s more to the civil service than box-ticking and inscrutable acronyms. When Cassie is drawn into a plot involving alien invaders, unscrupulous billionaires and the highest levels of government, she also discovers that living in her home city are a group of semi-retired gods, witches and supernatural beings, hidden in plain sight. As Cassie’s true power becomes apparent, she becomes a vital ally against the forces that want to rid the world of gods and humans alike.

They have only 10 days to save the human race and themselves.

Like Good Omens had a cup of tea with Yes Minister and invited the gods, witches and aliens over for a surprise party.

5 star review: "Discovery" is a clever, engaging read that should appeal to fans of Good Omens and Neverwhere. The first book of the D-Notice series, it's a gripping story about one young woman slowly realising that the world around her is stranger than she imagined. Overall, Louise McLaughlin is definitely a writer to watch.

Louise was born in the same hospital where George Orwell wrote 1984. When growing up in East Kilbride in the 80s, it was clear to see the legacy he left; there was a library on every corner and two nuclear bunkers. She went to Glasgow University and achieved a Master of Arts. She then joined the sensible corporate world of paper shuffling. For the last 25 years, her career has culminated in various promotions to the heady heights where she now tells stories for a living. She still shuffles paper, but virtually now, so that’s progress.

A gripping, genre-bending urban fantasy that blends the darkly comic with the politically sinister. Set in a delightfully decadent hotel run by witches, the story casts a scathing spell on corruption and control. With razor-sharp dialogue and a richly layered magical world, it’s an enthralling peek behind the curtain of power, where enchantments and espionage collide. Wickedly clever, with characters you won’t forget.

Louise McLaughlin's "Discovery" took me on a wild journey mixing government conspiracies with gods and witches living among us in Glasgow. I loved Cassie's character - she thinks she's taking a boring government job only to discover she has special powers and gets caught up in saving humanity from aliens and corrupt billionaires.
The supernatural elements blended perfectly with political intrigue, and the 10-day countdown kept me turning pages! The humor was spot-on too. It was refreshing to read urban fantasy set in Scotland rather than the usual American cities. If you enjoy supernatural stories with strong female leads and government conspiracies, this one's for you!

I was really surprised by this book. I loved cassies role. Her journey from bored civil servant to key player in a cosmic-level battle is handled brilliantly. I love how her story folded and this made me fall in love with her and kept routing for her. Also, what I loved most is how the story balances real-world bureaucracy with magical mayhem. Good story telling!

The mix of ancient magic, alien conspiracies, and government secrets creates a unique, immersive world. Cassie’s transformation into a key player against powerful enemies feels fresh and empowering. A must-read for fans of urban fantasy with a modern twist.

I picked it up expecting light fantasy, but it delivered so much more great characters, fast-paced action, and a plot full of twists. Cassie is a fun protagonist to follow, and the mix of ancient magic and modern government conspiracies worked really well. It reminded me a little of Good Omens with its humor and chaos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for fans of urban fantasy with brains, bite, and a splash of divine chaos.
Reviewed in India on May 14, 2025
Cassie is a wonderfully grounded protagonist who finds herself in a not-so-ordinary government job—one that soon leads her into a hidden world of gods, witches, and ancient power struggles happening right in the heart of Glasgow. The tone is intelligent yet playful, the world-building is top-tier, and the blend of real-world politics with the fantastical adds a unique edge.

The pacing is tight, the writing crisp, and the twists genuinely surprising. If you enjoy stories that blur the lines between magic and reality—with a strong female lead and a narrative that keeps you guessing—Discovery is the perfect start to what promises to be a riveting series.

Highly recommended for fans of urban fantasy with brains, bite, and a splash of divine chaos.

5.0 out of 5 stars keine klassische Heldin, kein klassiches Buch!
