I finished this one over a month ago but I needed time to process it, because it was one hell of a mind-f$%k. Distorted was incredibly true to its name, delivering twists that messed with both my head and emotions and I'm still not okay. A dark MM romance, Distorted follows Russian criminal Dascha Reznikov as he's arrested after a failed bank robbery and thrown in Alabaster Penitentiary, a secret prison where the worst of the worst are left to rot. Where the living conditions are horrendous, and the guards take what they want. The author makes a big (and repeated) point about avoiding spoilers, which I'll agree would make a massive difference to the book if you had advanced knowledge of the twist (good or bad - at the very least it would dampen its head-blowing effect). But I will say that to me, it felt like the book was split into three parts (and considering its size, that was how I read it: almost equal thirds on consecutive nights) such that one barely resembled the others, only adding to its overwhelming mental exhaustion. I enjoyed it. I think. I did! I loved the writing and I loved the set-up and I loved how dark and twisted it really was, but I didn't like the twist - not because it wasn't well-written, but because I wasn't emotionally ready to deal with it, and I was in denial for days...it came at a time where my anxiety was flaring up, and it just destroyed me, haha. I recommend only if you are into dark MM romance and have your eyes wide open. But if that's you...it's one hell of ride!

    I honestly don’t know how I feel…this book threw me for a loop in the best way. The plot twist 🤯 was genius and I kinda pieced parts of it together but it was too complex to fully understand it until it came out fully. Dash and Kemp are just freaking amazing and I loved this story so much. Definitely recommend this book but keep your mind open for the craziness and there are triggering things in here, so check your mental health. Jumping into book two and hoping it just as good!!

    Okay, so wow. I'll skim over the part where people complain about the author's foreword. I sort of agree with the "don't post spoilers" comments because I feel like people shouldn't be made to feel bad so long as they hide them or tag them, but this book had some serious twists so I can understand why the author wouldn't want them mentioned.

    Moving along.

    This book has pretty much every trigger you can possibly imagine. The only one I can think of that it doesn't have is a miscarriage, so please do not go into this lightly.

    The only word I can use to describe this book is intense. Basically from the moment it begins you get sucked into this incredibly messed up world where there are no rules unless you're an inmate and lines are blurred everywhere. Dash is an incredibly complex character whose personality takes a long time to unravel. He's a seemingly normal guy living in a messed up place and every time I thought about the fact that he and the other inmates will never, ever get out of there, it kind of broke my heart. Which is interesting because some of the people in there did some incredibly heinous things, so the fact that the author was able to invoke sympathy for people who we would never feel sympathy in the real world is a feat unto itself.

    Kemper was weird and creepy. His obsession with Dash was insane and just gets even more weird as the book goes on. Everything comes full circle and many, many questions are answered as the book unfolds, but wow is it a wild ride until then.

    The ending didn't blow my mind, per se because if I'm being honest I figured out the general idea pretty early on, but I couldn't figure out how it all came together. When it did, that was the part that had me going, "uh what?" and "how does that work out?" I would say 95% of it makes sense, but there are some situations that happened that even now I can't figure out. I honestly don't think some of them make sense so someone could have picked through it a little better to iron out those issues. A lot of the situations are left open with the reader having to use their imagination to figure out how it all worked out, which I didn't entire care for.

    On a picky note, this book definitely needed a round of edits. There were quite a few errors, not to mention, using multiple question marks to signify surprise and confusion is pretty amateur. Aside from that, it was well written and incredibly captivating so I definitely recommend this one. I'm not into mmf, but I am so curious about the next book in the series that I may go ahead and give it a whirl. We shall see. For now, this was a great intro into Nyla K.

    Review edited after listening to it again before reading book 2 in the series, huge shift when listening this time! Changed from 3 to 4.5 stars (rounded up to 5 with the narration). I missed a lot I think in book 1 when listening the first time. Now that I know what was going to happen it read/listened way better!

    So I loved this book until the major twist, I won't sugar coat it. I knew something was up, I thought maybe they had a split personality and was losing time but I didnt see this one coming (that's as much as I will say because I don't want to spoil anything for others). I will say some of the parts in the beginning were tough to listen to but I went in knowing it was a dark romance and I have read a taboo romance from this author so I knew they pushed the lines/limits and I have read much darker MM books so it didnt phase me. I thought the steam was incredible in the first 60-70%. The author really knows how to weave the steamy scenes, get us falling for a couple that shouldn't have been a thing/some non con/dub con moments, but boy was I shipping them so hard hahaha.

    I think for me I appreciate bringing up mental health into books because my family has had a lot of devastation because of them and seeing someone go through it is so hard when you feel like you just want to help and just need to be there for them. I thought there were a lot of plot holes but some things made waaaaay more sense once you listen to book 1 and even more when you listen to book 2. I think I wasn’t too keen on this one when I listened to it the one and only time before because I felt things were missing/disconnected. It read better once you listen to it again, and some holes were filled in book 2 as well with the explanations. Now don’t get me wrong, some things still don’t make sense but I was so engrossed in this one when I listened again, to see if I noticed anything earlier on haha.

    And I really did enjoy the side characters in this one as well, I loved Lex, Wren was hilarious, and I am suuuuuper interested in Rook and his dynamics moving forward. I loved the prison atmosphere and the bartering/favors haha. I was surprised there was so humor in this one (based on the topics and genre) but it was a great mix of steam, plot, humor, suspense, etc.

    Narration was great (I did listen 1.5-1.6X speed depending on who was talking. I have listened to one of these narrators before and the other was new so it was fun to add another narrator to my good list haha. These characters were brought to life by these 2 performances. I felt the heartache, the confusion, the blossoming love, the conflict. They did a great job with their inflections, their perspectives. 5/5 easily from my for the narration ❤️

    I am excited to listen to their audiobooks if/when they come out. I am certainly going to continue with this series, I love MM and MMF, this book had so much potential and the audio was fabulous so I would still recommend this author but this book had a lot of misses for me. I will say not knowing what was going to happen was a huge anxiety moment for me. Like I knew the shoe was gonna drop soon, just not how haha. It created a lot of suspense and intrigue!

    C'est mon deuxième livre de cet auteur, le 1er était PUSH et si vous ne l'avez pas lu je vous le conseille fortement. L'histoire de Distorted se passe dans une prison, après que Dash ait cambriolé une banque. Au début j'étais un peu sceptique car je sortais de ma zone de confort et j'avais peur que ça ne soit pas ma tasse de thé, mais une fois commencé je n'ai pas pu m'arrêter. Nyla a un don avec les émotions et vous avez vraiment l'impression de vivre la scène en même temps que les personnages, je crois que c'est ça qui fait d'un auteur qu'il excelle. Ceci étant dit c'est une très belle histoire d'amour bien que le contexte soit glauque et triste au début. Des amitiés se forment, et Nyla va développer dans ses prochains tomes les personnages secondaires. Je ne peux pas en dire plus sinon SPOILERS, mais vous ne serez pas déçus une fois plongé dans l'histoire.
    Pour moi c'était mon 1er livre MM et j'ai adoré la fusion entre les 2 protagonistes, hâte de lire la suite.

    OMG. The twist, in this book had the best plot twist ever!! It was crazy and Dark! So very dark! Many chapters were triggering and the ending was the best part.

    It's been so long since I have read and enjoyed such an utter amazingness that I am totally consumed by it! The way Nyla has written this book is marvelous. I am not going to say anything about the storyline because the last thing I want to do is give away any spoilers, but I can warn you that this book is one ef of a ride. It was thick af and the twists and turns are definitely not something that you'll see coming. By the 80% of this book, my mind was totally messed up and I didn't know what was happening but when things came to light I was like, OMG!!! So amazing!

    Like I said before, this book does have a lot of triggers such as NonCon , DubCon, etc. So please keep that in mind before reading this book. But trust me, the darkness aside, this book is definitely worth reading! It was more of a psychological thriller and had me totally addicted. I can't wait for more from this series and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to all the DARK MM romance lovers out there!!
