4.5 out of 5 stars 28 ratings

Murder rips the veil off her magic…

Caly Cook likes being hidden and alone.

The demons of her long lost family make it easier not to trust people. She’s also living as a human, and the last thing she wants is to advertise her ability to leave her body and roam the world as pure spirit.

But when a series of brutal killings ravage young supernaturals, Caly must use every gift she possesses to track down the murderer. After she teams up with a gorgeous wizard named Knox Alexandru, the irresistible attraction between them shatters her carefully constructed solitude.

As the young victims pile up, the city of Orament teeters on the edge of interspecies chaos. Can Caly accept herself - and face the darkness in her own past - before more lives are lost?

The Thorn Demon series is urban fantasy with a thread of clean but stormy romance. In each book, characters go through hard times and confront their deepest fears. The story builds and builds, taking readers through detective mystery, portal fantasy and psychological suspense - you will not believe where you end up!

My name is not Kendra Callaway. It’s a dream-big pen name, reflecting my infatuation with The Southern Vampire Mystery books and all things magical and romantic.

In reality (where I don’t spend as much time as I should), I live in the English countryside with my husband, two children and my goal of one day owning a husky.

This book had me hooked from the beginning, and I didn't want to put it down. The main character, Calypso, lives in a small town inhabited by humans as well as the supernatural. Calypso is a very relatable character, finding her own identity while facing her insecurities. The supernatural vs human conflict around the town, and the recent murders that took place only add to Calypso's uncertainty. I can't wait to read more in this series, and learn more about these unforgettable characters.

This is a great twist on the supernatural genre as we see a young woman with a tragic past who believes she is human slowly cone to terms with the fact that although she isn’t sure what she is. She isn’t quite as human as she thinks. Many plot threads are not resolved setting up book two nicely. I enjoyed seeing Carly finally find friends I’m quite ambivalent about Knox so much just doesn’t add up about who he wants to be in her life. I love in the end she makes it out and is finally making a bane for herself. Fun read!

If Nancy Drew were a lovesick teen in a fantasy world with a weird ability than this is somewhat how it would go. I think it would be a good teen read for a young tween to teen girl. There were few editorial issues but very hard to deal with the continuous angst and random spats of illogical do something that doesn’t make sense for some emotional reason.

Usually mystery isn’t my genre, but this one was something else.
Story and characters are lively, well-paced and build. It isn't super obvious in plot and storyline which i greatly appreciate.
Calypso Cook is ambitious and energetic at her work as journalist, but hides herself and her magical identity especially in her private live.
We learn a lot about her past as she is solving this gruesome killing spree, but her future is a well of possibilities.
I’m thrilled to see how she and her cute, furry sidekick Rascal are evolving as magical beings and personalities in the next books.
The story ends partly in a cliff hanger, I’m looking forward to hopefully see it resolved in the next book.
I recommend this book to all readers, which like to relax with a good mystery, with well-rounded characters and a pinch of magic.
