Division of the Marked (The Marked Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
Experience the COMPLETE epic fantasy - brimming with mystery, martial arts, and romance.
As children, they meet.
Yarrow and Bray have little in common. He's bookish. She's a fighter. But the same ancient symbol brands their skin, marking them as members of the Chisanta—a superhuman society of scholars and martial artists. Together they undergo a brutal initiation trial, forming a bond that neither can forget.
As adults, they clash.
Years later these friends-turned-rivals reunite, and fond memories won’t stop them from crossing swords. She doesn’t trust him. He doesn’t understand her. But if they don’t learn to work together, a troubling string of deaths will remain unsolved. And the fate of their kind could hang in the balance.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2013If I could give this book 6 stars, I would. It's a crazy good book.
In June of 2013, I read a book called Fire Country by an Indie author and when I had finished it, I was stunned. I had not read another Indie book quite of that caliber and was sure I wasn't going to again. I mean this book was so good, I found myself asking "why is this an Indie book?" and that doesn't mean Indie books are bad, it just means that it takes so much more for them to be phenomenal. They don't have the luxury of professional editors or a whole slew of people letting them know what works and what doesn't. If it's that good, it's because THE AUTHORS have made them that good. Of late, the Indie books I have been reading are getting better and better, so it's really an exciting time for discovering new finds.
So imagine my surprise when I found one that not only has beaten that book, it has blown me out of the water again. I'm trying to put my finger on what exactly made this book so amazing to me, so I'll try to just list the things that I can't get over.
BOOK CRUSH
If I was 17 and still a girl in high school, the answer would be Ko-Jin. He reminds me of Bruce Lee and I had a bit of a crush on him back then. So the answer is Yarrow. As an adult, I find the bookish/intelligent type irresistible. Add to it that he has a deep soul and empathy for others, done deal. I pictured him as Andrew Garfield (the new Spiderman.)
THINGS I LOVED
1) The author has a way of making me see what's going on. I can picture everything perfectly, which is quite a task since this is a fantasy novel. I still can't figure out what EXACTLY she did for me to see the characters, setting, and actions so perfectly.
2) One of the ways a book makes me fall in love with it is if it can make the words dance and feel as if they belong together. This can't be done by just anyone. This is usually reserved for those who were born to write...or very, very hard workers. This happened quite a bit in this book and I would just sit back and smile...and reread the sentence again. I'm kind of kicking myself for not highlighting them as I went on because of the gems I found, but maybe that was part of the beauty of reading this book. I enjoyed every minute of the immersion.
3) The characters. This can't be stated enough. This is probably the biggest reason this book will always have a special place in my heart. Usually I have one character who I can't live without. In this book, there were at least three and I'm still grieving over one I lost. For some reason when this character calls those he loves, "love" I find myself choked up a bit, even a little as I think about it right now. No idea why. There is also a part where the character Bray (who is beautiful) changes her physical appearance dramatically and normally I would think this might bother me, but it didn't...not even a little. Still not sure why that is. Either Bray was so great either way or I just got less shallow, I'll let you decide.
4) I cannot even explain my feelings for this book. There is a cliffhanger of sorts of an ending and usually this pisses me off, but this was the type of book I did not rush (rare for me) because it was just a joy to read and I don't mind waiting to see what happens next. That's a unique thing to do for an author. They rely on suspense to keep the reader involved and while there was plenty of suspense, it wasn't the reason I kept turning the pages, I was just enjoying myself.
THINGS I DIDN'T LOVE
Nothing. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2017Yeah, about that ten years
Orson Scott Card once said that books, fiction books, were divided into four different groups: those that focused on character, those that focused on a new world, those that focused on an event, and those that focused on an idea. This was a character book.
Every good character book needs some kind of tension for their characters, and this book provides them. Indeed two main tensions. Well, no, three:
1) First of all there is the 'wow, I have suddenly become a whole different person than I thought I was going to be growing up. I am suddenly 'marked', have magical powers, and have to become one of two different groups, very antagonistic, living miles apart.
2) I suddenly have a very deep relationship with several new people, including a sexual interest, and our relationships get torn about by the above mentioned two groups.
3) Someone is killing a bunch of people. Our kind of people. Needs to be stopped.
The author handles each of these tensions pretty well. The very annoying ten year gap in the story is a cheat: designed to keep the reader's mind on the 'how we felt about each other when we got broken up', and pass lightly over the (relatively important) new idea that 'we are part of two separate groups the hate each other' without having to actually explain why these two groups hate each other… or what most of them do most of the time anyway.
But the ten year gap works for that. If the author, or the reader, doesn't want to do the hard work of living through (or writing through or reading through) that ten year gap while the tension rises even while the nostalgic 'remember who we were then' fails to fade… then one needs a ten year gap.
But my problem with this book is I happen to like books that actually explain the world, and where the world makes sense. And this book, and this world, do not. Two groups which can fight extremely well due to the above mentioned magical powers: cool. These two groups in a world where no fighting goes on? Weird.
So, anyway, I want to see in the ten year gap, and I want to learn about the world. Oh, and I hate this whole 'sacrifice' thing. Go on a quest and do great things, cool. Condemn to non-existence your potential family? Not at all cool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Addictive
A story about two lovers who find themselves on opposite camps but still manage to come together despite the seemingly vast differences only to be torn apart (at least as far as the first book goes) by a cleverly foreshadowed element.
I enjoyed the drama. And the magical component keeps things interesting enough. This could be the begining of a binge worthy series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars
I'd heard amazing things about this story, so I couldn't resist reading it, even though it started out like a young adult book, with a fourteen-year-old protagonist. But these were hardly children suffering from teenage angst - they live in a society where they're effectively adults and think like them, too.
Fast forward ten years - yes, the story does skip the intervening time - and the majority of the book is about the now 24-year-old Marked characters of Bray, Yarrow and the others. And if ten years is enough time for them to mature, it's also enough time for a planned conspiracy to develop, too...
Brilliantly executed, set in a world so like our own in the Victorian era, yet so different, too. An enchanting blend of mysticism and adventure that had me staying up late, crying over imaginary people, and dying to read the next instalment. Which I believe I'll be doing right away.
Five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exhilarating Fantasy Adventure
I bought 'Division of the Marked' because it was cheap and sounded appealing. Little did I know just how appealing it would be.
The story follows a handful of 14-year-olds who find themselves marked with tattoos that give them mystical abilities and entry to a secretive organisation of monk-like individuals called the Chisanta. Forced to leave home, the group face a grueling initiation and enter into rival factions within the Chisanta where they train for years, developing their skills away from home. Sounds cool, right? Well, when a worldwide criminal conspiracy implicates the Chisanta, the fate of the world is put into question and the adventure reaches even more exhilarating heights.
Personally, I was a massive fan. The author forms a sort of complicity between the reader and the heroes then throws everything you previously thought you knew about the characters into disarray. The plot is intricately laced with foreshadowing and prophesies, all of which are tasteful and clever (as apposed to the cheap attempts sometimes achieved by other, less skillful writers). Without giving too much away, the ending is superb but does leave a lot of conjecture.
Despite being sceptical about a lot of self-published content on Kindle, I was surprised by how absorbing this story turned out to be. I will definitely have to purchase the sequel to satisfy my curiosity concerning how the story comes to a close.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy, young adult fiction... or reading in general. It was fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, it is good. Korean drama-like and lovely.
Reading this book was much like watching a Korean drama. Of course, the story was more refined than a Korean drama's; but the progression and the character development followed similar patters of a drama. I hated all the characters, later loved them, then mourned my feelings of hate as they were replaced by grief and sadness. Further, the love, as described in this book, cannot be found in any other book. Read it if you hate dramas. Read it if you love dramas. Read it if this is the last book which you will read this year. It is good.

3.0 out of 5 stars interesting storyline…
This book, even though marketed for you adult readers was interesting enough to keep an adult reading to the end…it was a little jumpy sometimes and not as smooth reading as similar books / series in this genre, but l am hopeful book 2 will show more signs of flow…as the author gets into her groove, which is usually the case for most series type books, an enjoyable fast read and l unique storyline
