A Donkey On The Catwalk: Tales of life in Greece (The Peloponnese Series Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 488 ratings

“Gerald Durrell meets Bill Bryson.” Praise for the Peloponnese series

"The stories in A Donkey On The Catwalk are funny, poignant and utterly fascinating."

The 4th book in the Amazon best-selling Peloponnese series, A Donkey On The Catwalk is a stunning collection of original stories and travel narratives, many of them following the adventures of Marjory, Jim and their lovable terrier Wallace in rural Greece. Once again there are comical and insightful tales of life in wild and memorable locations.

While this book can be read as a standalone, loyal readers will be further enlightened by the escapades of the unforgettable farmer Foteini: her unique take on life; her outrageous ‘fashions’, including a makeshift shoe design you will never forget, and her ‘haute couture’ offerings for Riko the donkey.

As well as tales of the Peloponnese, there are stories from other Greek locations the couple have visited, including Pelion and the islands of Santorini and Corfu. This book also offers a fascinating glimpse into some of the author’s earliest trips to Greece with tales that have not been published before, including a year of teaching English in Athens during a dangerous time of political upheaval; a humorous story of facing up to bizarre religious relics in Corfu; and a long sabbatical in Crete that didn’t quite go to plan, with a hint of unexpected romance in an idyllic setting.

This book also includes some of the author's photographs of her travels in Greece.

Marjory McGinn has done it again with her latest brilliantly written book A DONKEY ON THE CATWALK. She has captivated me with her story telling and I have grown to understand her adventurous side which is - exploration of destinations unknown! It's a book that the author has written about her many thoughtful and humorous remembrances of her travel odysseys to Greece over the years and spun them into a collection of memoirs that are filled with charm, optimism, history and intrigue. Even in her early travels as a student, she quickly immersed herself in the culture and experience of each opportunity that presented itself. Readers will certainly appreciate the warmth and connection she has with the people she meets. The tales of our heroine Foteini and her pet donkey Riko are endearing, showing Foteini's natural friendship, grace and true quirkiness.
I love the way Marjory can turn a few words and phrases into a sentence of magical joy.
"What you plan to do on a night of mad possibilities on a Greek terrace, after a few wines, can evaporate the next day like a coastal mist in the first shaft of sunlight"
Some stories are poignant, many are funny and some are utterly fascinating! But all are memorable and invoke in me the desire to revisit Greece again - to be in the midst of its beauty and its big-hearted and warm-spirited people again.

Marjory's latest book on Greece and her Greek adventures was a fun, interesting and educational read. As always, she characterizes Greece and the Greek people perfectly. Three chapters really stood out to me:
    Driving yourself mad in Greece
Marjory recommends: give way to everything, always. Sage advice. I remember driving in Chios along a mountainous road with view to the water and steep drop offs just at the side of the road, with no guard rails. I was going VERY slowly, letting everyone pass- old rusty cars, guys on scooters, sea turtles, Yiayias with walkers. Everybody. Let it go and you'll survive.
    Afraid of relics? Look away
Greece has many famous sights that must be seen. However, some of the most interesting sights are off the beaten path. Marjory describes various relics in churchs, body parts of saints for example. I've been to Greece many times, but on my last trip I found perhaps the most fascinating finding. I was able to gain access to a family's private chapel on the side of a road. Inside were nearly perfectly preserved frescoes from the 13th century. In Greece it's good to ditch the tour book and explore
    Losing our Marbles?
I thought I knew all about the Parthenon Marbles. I was wrong. Using her journalism skills, Marjory uncovers info about the Marbles and Greek antiquities that I didn't know.
The rest of the chapters are excellent as well. Pick up a copy and enjoy

What a delight this book has been to read. I've devoured all Marjory McGinn's previous Greek memoirs, and this collection of stories from both her more recent travels there as well as the visits she made to the country in her youth is a marvellous addition. There are many wonderful accounts that fill in the gaps and explain why she kept going back to the country until, with her husband, she spent four years in the Peloponnese starting in 2010.

I particularly enjoyed the chapters about her experiences in Athens and Crete from the 1970s, to the 90s. They portray a simpler, yet richer country and despite the political traumas of 70s, it is easy to see what drew Marjory to Greece and the Greeks. There are beautiful chapters of nostalgia too, some of which moved me deeply. And then of course, there is a liberal sprinkling of humour in the chapters where Wallace, Jim and Marjory's delightful Jack Russel, features as well as those that include the famous Foteini.

All in all, this is a wonderful mix that will give the reader more insights into Greece and Marjory McGinn's ongoing love affair with the country. Highly recommended!

Having read and loved both novels and the 3 previous travel memoirs of McGinn's as well as her excellent blog, I was eager to read this new follow-up, with more anecdotes from her beloved times with husband Jim and their Jack Russell terrier, Wallace (RIP), in Greece and, like so many others, news of Foteini and Rico the fashion donkey of the Mani! I couldn't have been more pleased with this book! This author is a delightful storyteller, with a fine sense of humor coupled with the daring of a journalist's search for truth and understanding from each encounter. Read it and enjoy the scenery, the characters - including darling Wallace (may he Rest In Peace), the magic, and the synchronistic happenings of just ... living the Greek life (but without pickled songbirds) - Thanks for the smiles, Marjory - Yeia Sas!!

The stories are insightful on why people want to escape to a different country, live a different life but some just don't manage to reinvent themselves.
All of the previous books tell a good story of culture, characters, and a history of Greece that is important to remember and not forget. Throw in a unique dog and individual village people and you have an enjoyable experience.

This is a nice addition to her three other books that were about living in Greece. This book concentrates more on later trips to Greece after returning to the UK to live.

The author, Marjory McGinn, first went to Greece in the 70's when she was young. Glimpses of her disappointment with how Greece has changed since then are mentioned throughout the book.

Some favorite characters are back and so are some favorite places.

Almost as enjoyable as the other books in the series.

I've read all of Marjory McGinn's excellent Greek travel memoirs and this latest book in the series is outstanding. It's a highly entertaining and absorbing mix of funny tales and travel narratives, reflecting the author's many trips to Greece, spanning several decades. The stories are full of colourful characters including, once again, the goat farmer Foteini and her fashionista donkey Riko, from a hillside village in the Mani region, creating hilarity as always. The author's incisive observations on Greek life, culture, customs and religion are unrivalled. Highly recommended.
