Double Pursuit: A European thriller (The Mélisende Thrillers Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

She’s hunting arms smugglers. But who is hunting her?

One dead body, two badly injured operatives and five crates of hijacked rifles.
In Rome, former French special forces intelligence analyst Mélisende des Pittones is frustrated by obnoxious local cops, hidden agendas and ruthless thugs. Although backed by the powerful but secretive powerful European Investigation and Regulation Service, her investigation has stalled.

Then an unknown woman tries to blow her head off.

As Mel and fellow investigator Jeff McCracken pursue an international criminal network as well as negotiate their own unpredictable relationship, all roads point to the place she dreads – the arid, remote and dangerous African Sahel – where she was once betrayed and nearly died. Can Mel conquer her fear as she races to smash the network and save her colleague’s life?

Double Pursuit is the faced-paced sequel to Double Identity from the author of the award-winning Roma Nova thriller series. A great read for fans of Daniel Silva, Stella Rimington or Chris Pavone.

--------

“The most perfect female heroine that the book world needs more of! It’s been an absolute joy to jump back into this series, and I’ve loved every second of Mel’s new journey. If you love crime thrillers, you need to read Alison’s work and you won’t regret meeting Mélisende des Pittones!” – A Quintillion of Words

I was so excited to learn that Double Identity was not a standalone, but the start of an action-packed international thriller series that features one of my current favorite kick-butt action heroines. Mel is such a strong character.” – Avonna Loves Genres

In this international nail-biter, Morton doubles down in a tale of intrigue, politics and the shadows of the past.” – J J Marsh, author of the Beatrice Stubbs and Run and Hide thrillers

I have grown accustomed to being thrown straight into the action when reading Ms Morton’s books – and Double Pursuit does not disappoint, with the first murder victim popping up on the first page. Our heroine Mel is in Rome at the time, and other than a sequence of breath-taking action scenes in this city old as the seven hills upon which it perches, Ms Morton throws in several elegant and vivid descriptions, complete with a somewhat supercilious Italian policeman.
The violence becomes personal: one colleague is badly injured, Mel and partner (in more senses than one) Jeff are almost blown to pieces as they doggedly follow what few leads they can find. Clearly, they’ve trod straight into a hornet’s nest—and even more intriguing, there seems to be a personal angle.
Mel and Jeff bounce from Rome to Brussels to the UK to the south of France. Slowly, a pattern emerges, one that leads directly to the Sahel in Africa and the terrorists that hide in its wide expanse. The Sahel…the mere name has Mel shivering, drowning her in memories of betrayal and loss she would prefer not to have.
Things are further complicated by the rising tension between Jeff and Mel, leaving our heroine very alone as she is obliged to face the lethal combination of new terrorist threats and the restless ghosts of her past.
As always, Ms Morton’s dialogue is crisp and pitch-perfect. As always, she presents us with complex characters. As always, she creates a strong sense of place with her descriptions, be it of the empty wastes of the Sahel or the interior of an English pub. Most of all, Ms Morton gives us a deliciously intricate thriller, with each little twist peeling off like yet another layer of an onion as Mel slowly digs her way down to the truth. And as Mel digs, this reader holds her breath and crosses her fingers, quite, quite incapable of tearing herself away from the book. That, IMO, is the hallmark of a truly gripping read!

Double Pursuit by Alison Morton is the second book in this series. I did read book one, Double Identity, which gives lots of background on the characters, however, I do believe this could standalone. I’m glad I read the books in order though, because I appreciate the characters even more.

Speaking of characters, I love them! Mel is such a great main character and she really makes this novel compelling to read. I couldn’t wait to read this after I’d read the first book. This is an action packed, international thriller with a fabulous heroine. Mel is strong, with a rich background, and she’s easy to love.

Double Pursuit is a page turning, character driven novel, that I’m so glad I had the chance to read. I can’t wait for more from Alison Morton. Don’t miss out on this one!

Thank you to Alison Morton for the free review copy. All opinions are my own and unbiased.

Alison Morton's newest thriller, "Double Pursuit," does not disappoint! It's a fast moving story involving illegal arms sales and a multitude of nefarious characters that criss-crosses two continents as Melisende tries to learn who is the evil ringleader. I was hooked at page 1!

I love how the action never stops in Morton's novels and the characters she creates are so realistic you feel like you see them on the street everyday.

    Highly recommended.

    REVIEW
When it comes to creating strong female lead characters, Alison Morton is at the top of my list of authors who possess that ability. Melisende is tough, gritty, extremely capable, and yet vulnerable to the emotional twists and turns put in her path. Double Pursuit is a taut, non-stop thriller, much in the tradition of the author's Roma Nova tales. This is the second book in the series, but it is sufficiently built upon the first one so that I had no trouble following the plot as it referred back. The characters are a nice blend of conflicting personalities, so that even the good guys have problems with each other. 😊 The story line keeps the reader on their toes: there be some surprises in there, shock induced page turning surprises. So, my peeps and fellow readers, it is the opinion of this scribbler of reviews that you can't go wrong with this series. I'm certainly going to rectify my having not read the first volume. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!

This is the second instalment in this thriller series and I absolutely loved it! It follows on from the previous one so I would recommend reading that first. The story is perfectly plotted, moves at breakneck speed and whisks you along into intrigue and danger right from the start. The heroine, Mel, is tough, capable and quick-thinking. She never gives up and stays focused on her task – to unmask and catch an extremely dangerous terrorist, arms-dealer and human trafficker who seems to have some personal vendetta against her. It’s a race against time and the stakes become even higher when her partner, Jeff, is taken hostage. I was on the edge of my seat to see how/if Mel would manage to come up trumps. I love the dynamics between her and Jeff, and the ‘opposites attract’ thing they have going on. Really hope there will be more books in this series – highly recommended!

I read the first book in this series, Double Identity, and thoroughly enjoyed it and Ms Morton's latest doesn't disappoint. Mel is a wonderful heroine - courageous, fiercely loyal, extremely bright, and a perfect match for her fellow investigator, Jeff McCracken, who is opposite her in character in nearly every way. What a team they make as they try to break a criminal network which pulls them into life-threatening situations. This kept me up late, but worth every thrilling page as I ran with Mel all the way. I do hope this is only the second of a series.
