The Dragon God's Sacrifice: A Gay Fantasy Romance (The Dragons of Serai Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 345 ratings

Can I survive loving a god?

For as long as I can remember, and even further back than that, the Dragons of Serai have worshiped a goddess and only her. But everything has changed. A god has risen. He has returned long-lost magic to my people and balanced the Fire within us. Those who could, made the journey to Ha'tezan, where the God's temple was unearthed. I am fortunate enough to be one of those Dragons.

Shortly after my arrival, Karadas, the Dragon God of the Moon and Water, demanded a sacrifice—a man willing to give himself completely to our god and serve him in every way. Although the Sacrifice would be a servant to the God, he would hold a status even higher than that of a king. Dragons vied for the position, lining up every day at his temple to be considered. I did not go. I knew there was no chance of the God choosing me.

And yet, that's exactly what happened.

Karadas chose me. I'm honored and overjoyed to be chosen. I know that serving him will bring me undreamed of pleasure. It will free me from my family and give me a chance at a new life. But I'm not a fool. I also know that his interest will wane, and he will eventually choose another. He's my god, the most beautiful being I've ever seen and more powerful than anyone on Serai. I will surely fall in love with him. And he will, just as surely, destroy my heart. Pain is coming, a lot of it, but that's nothing new for me. I will glory in the pleasure and not think about the agony that will come when I cease to be the Dragon God's Sacrifice.

Trigger warning: This book contains scenes that may be upsetting to readers who are sensitive to abuse, including domination and infidelity.

What can I say about this one? I was starting to think of this review before I finished reading the book. I was thinking at the time that the author had hit a wall at that point in the story and just changed the characteristics of one of the main leads to get to where she wanted in the story.

I should have known better, 4 books in, that this author doesn’t do that.

So why am I still holding out on that last half a star, mentally? Because I felt as emotionally abused as the main character was at the time.

Yes, it was all explained by the end of the book and it was not his fault, but trauma lingers and I do not have a mate to kiss me and make it all better.

With that being said. Once you make it to where you see volcanoes, you start to mentally heal and you can “relax” and “enjoy” the rest of the story. I put up the “” because that is how I felt, but you may be on board for the everything or bitting your nails up until the very end. And the end does go places I didn’t expect and one thing I was thinking about just after the volcanoes.

I kinda hope I see them again in the next story to answer a question that they ended this story on.

For this world, the last three or so chapters, or so, is a must read. There were similar bread crumbs dropped earlier, but they get put into play here.

Now I’m off to find out how a modern human rockstar ended up in this place.

    Later.

I really liked the first and second books of the series. The third was weak, as I said in my review of it. As someone else noted, the series has gone downhill fast. While I enjoy the sex scenes in Sumida's books, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. In this book in particular, the first quarter of the book (27% on the Kindle) was nothing but sex. I ended up skimming through a lot of it because I wanted a plot of some sort. The abusive nature of the relationship was not palatable and not particularly interesting either with too much angst about the relationship. I kept skimming through pages just to get it done. I bought the rest of the series after having read the first two and am now regretting it. I will probably try one more but may never finish all of them.

It got an extra star because the actual writing was fine. Everything else i.e. the plot and characters was a dumpster fire. You can have domestic and s*xual ab*se in a story. You can even have DA and SA between the love interests. What you can't have, is a story and ending where the the DA and SA is excused, minimized, and forgotten. There is no love in this story. Zero. Nada.

This isnt one of those titillating books where you've got some over the top bdsm, dubious-consent fantasy that isn't supposed to be taken seriously. I enjoy books like that. I'm not a pearl clutcher. But this is just straight up classic abuse. If you wanted a primer on power and control relationship dynamics, and how the abuser excuses and gaslights his behavior, by all means, pick this one up. Every aspect the relationship is horror inducing. Frankly, I find it appalling and dangerous to glorify physical and s*xual abuse the way this book does. Literally, a classic abusive behavior is to react with over the top rage to the victim's attempt to assert independence as a form of punishment and control. The MC is a victim and the love interest is his abuser that he never escapes from.

I feel like I was lied to. This book is not a romance. Not even close. it left me with a sick taste in my mouth. If you want to write a book like this, by all means, write what you wanna write. But please don't market it as a romance.

I wasn’t sure what to expect but I’m so glad I got sucked into this world; it’s been a lot of fun!. It seems so easy these days for stories to veer off into deities, and often it is to the detriment of the overall story, even so far as killing the storyline. This story did a credible job with the addition of gods, believable, and even ended it such that the storyline can continue unimpeded. Impressive!

Karadas and Sora, god and sacrifice. I liked the god when he first appeared in The King's Philosopher. Here, he was not acting like himself, but by the end he was back.

3.0 out of 5 stars You better skip this book in the series!

I have read 4 books in the series, the first one I loved, 2nd and 3rd were ok, but this one? It’s a disaster! I really had to push myself to finish it; and I did that just because I want to read the following book and understand all the references. Otherwise? I would have, without a doubt, dropped it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different to the rest of the series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 30, 2023
I've loved this series and enjoyed each and every book but this one didn't quite live up to the rest of the series. I feel this book had more steam then was physically necessary it lacked the action like the first 3 books and focused allot more on the heat and i did find the mc a little bit abusive and didn't really get any punishment , i wouldn't have forgiven him so easily. Don't get me wrong its worth the read its just different to the others in the series. Really looking forward to book 5 hopefully allot more action , better storyline and lots of angst .

1.0 out of 5 stars Normalising partner abuse - not my cup of tea
Reviewed in Australia on June 5, 2023
Normally I love Amy Sumida’s books but this one just wasn’t for me. You spend most of the book with a front seat to some pretty horrific partner abuse. Which *spoiler* is ultimately excused away with no residual trauma or consequence. There is a trigger warning but the issue is not just the depiction but the messaging and normalising, even trivialising, of such abuse. Not cool.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment after enjoying Book 1-3
Reviewed in Germany on February 3, 2023
A vulnerable and self sacrificing victim gets psychologically and sexually abused by a "god". Endless and repetitive sex scenes and godly temper tantrums. Had higher hopes for this after 3 enjoyable books.
