DragonRider: MMM Paranormal Romance (DragonKin Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,608 ratings

Dragons are real. I should not be so distracted by the men riding them.

I’ve found myself in a hidden world of dragons and nightly battles to protect Earth, but while the dragons are magnificent magical creatures, and bonding with Ri and learning to fly is an exhilarating joy, other dragon riders are taking too much of my attention.

Mordecai is haunting my dreams and thoughts. He is a strikingly good looking man. Tall and lean with long blond hair and blue eyes that change shade with his emotions. But he is cruel, mocking and aloof. He lets no one close. I should leave him well alone.

Harlen is far nicer. He is friendly, takes an interest in me and smiles. His broad muscles and bronzed skin, together with his dark curls and copper eyes, give me butterflies.

When our bonded dragons mate, I know it affects us. A dragon’s passion is impossible to resist. But I’m shocked to discover which man is more dominant. And I’m awed by the awakening of my pleasure. Dragons aren’t the only things that are new to me. Exploring this side of my nature is divine.

But I can’t help hoping it is more than that.

In this strange new world of dragons, magic and desire, can I find my place? And can I find love?

Dragonrider is set in our modern world, one where dragons fly every night, you just can’t see them. It contains a gay 'Why choose' love triangle, with high steam, high stakes, high angst & a happy for now ending.

Kirby has set himself up as a sort of freelance mage, offering wards, spells, maybe the odd potion, to whomever needs them. He receives a commission involving a castle in Wales, but he’s not sure of the specifics. When he arrives, the imperious young man who greets him informs Kirby that he is just there to “round out the numbers” for the selection of a new dragon rider. Dragons were one of the few mythical creatures that Kirby was sure didn’t exist, so he’s thrilled just to get to meet one. Much to everyone’s surprise, the dragon chooses Kirby as his rider. Dragons and their riders defend Earth from demons attempting to invade from another realm. The stern man who greeted Kirby, Cai, leads the team and seems to dislike Kirby. The second in command is Harlan, who shamelessly flirts with the new rider. Kirby finds himself attracted to both men, but he's sure they're way out of his league.

“DragonRider” is a fun action-packed fantasy set in modern-day Wales. Kirby is the classic underdog hero. A seemingly ordinary young man caught up in extraordinary circumstances who proves to be more than he seems. Kirby discovers magical talents that he didn’t even know he had. He also discovers an appetite for sex despite an ex-boyfriend who convinced him he wasn’t any good at it.

Kirby is a very likable character. He is a very unassuming kind of man. Even when there are signs Kirby may be a long-awaited super-rider, he attempts to reject the idea. His reactions to things seem very natural and fitting with the picture that gets painted of his personality.

We only get to know the two love interests, Cai and Harlan, from Kirby’s point of view. Although both men are dedicated to the cause of the riders, in most other ways, they are complete opposites. It’s easy to understand Kirby’s attraction to Harlan, especially when the second in command makes his interest clear. He seems like a very likable fellow. Cai is much more of a mystery that only begins to get unwrapped as the story progresses.

Where things end up is not surprising given the full title of the book. However, this is just the start of a series. The next book picks up the story from Harlan’s point of view.

This is a very interesting read as I have not read any M/M/M paranormal romance stories before this one. It some ways it felt made for the young adult as nearly all of the characters are above 20 and under 30. But the sex scenes are definitely ADULT! Hot, Hot, Hot! The story line is interesting and I am looking forward to reading the next installment in the trilogy. I recommend this story for its ability to pull you in and let you get lost in the story.

This is definitely a instalove story so if that isn’t your thing, you may not enjoy this one. Characters are interesting but the plot lags a bit. I am planning to read the next one.

I am absolutely in love with Kirby. His lack of filter is something I can definitely relate to. The world building in this book is absolutely phenomenal. Harlen is the life of the party. Cai is the uptight, always serious leader who needs to be put in his place from time to time.

“It feels like the three of us can face anything. As long as we face it together.”

Harlen, Cai and Kirby just fit together perfectly. I’m theory it doesn’t seem like they’d work but they balance each other out with their different personalities.

“So what you are saying Ri, is that you are a huge slutty bottom and I’m along for the ride?”

DRAGONS. The bond that the dragon and rider share is really beautiful to witness. The complete trust and love that is almost instantaneous.

I’m not going to give much away because it’s worth the read to find out for yourself. But the spice is absolute fire

I cannot wait to see what happens next for these three and their dragons.

Not a bad story. I would’ve enjoyed it being longer and with more world building, it was still rather enjoyable. Kirby, Harlen, and Cai were interesting and I really liked their relationship. Though I do think Harlen and Cai could’ve done with more fleshing out. We learned so little about Harlen’s background and what Cai really thinks about each of them.

Hopefully books 2 and 3 will expand on the world and the characters.

Although this is a hot MMM romance, it could have stood on its own as a fantasy story. The author has successfully blended the two genres together to create an engrossing story. Although it doesn't end with a cliffhanger, there are unresolved issues that you will want to continue the series to get the whole story.

This book is paranormal and is about dragons. Kirby, a mage, goes to Wales for a job. Someone at a castle wants him to open a portal. Once he does this, he finds out that is not all. Unbeknownst to him, there really are dragons and one more mage is needed so that a dragon has 13 mages to choose his new rider from. To everyone's astonishment, Kirby included, the dragon chooses him. Then begins his "road" to becoming a dragon rider.
Kirby is very attracted to Cai, the team leader, and Harlan, his second in command. The three of the "dance" around each other before becoming involved.
I'm not a huge fan of dragon books, but this book was a wonderful surprise. Great storyline, humor, angst, danger and really steamy sex. It is the first part of a trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good and Bad is Very Subjective.
Reviewed in Australia on July 15, 2024
Have you ever noticed how subjective the terms good and bad can be. S. Rodman’s books are very good at highlighting this fact. This first of a series is another example of this fact as the ruling body is not as pure as it should be. If you like lots of action and a good storyline with your hot romance this is what you’ve been looking for. However do check the triggers first. Consent is there but isn’t always obvious.

Reviewed in Canada on July 19, 2023
A single POV story with a layperson chosen one trope becoming the morter that holds two people who love each other together. Yay! It's a fun story with some intriguing mysteries woven through it, and I'm really looking forward to the next one.

As a preference on writing style, I'd like to see the author choosing descriptions more often rather than the direct statements he's so fond of. (Eg, "his eyes bore into mine, cold enough to mimic the blue ice at the bottom a glacier" vs. "his eyes are so blue.").

The story was so good I couldn't put it down. I flew through the pages - the story developed at an excellent pace, I found myself looking forward to each chapter more and more. They were funny, heart warming, the hot scenes were scorching and Kirby 's growth was so rewarding to read. I cannot wait for the next book❤️

Reviewed in India on July 31, 2023
I didn't know what to think going into it as this is a new author for me but I'm super glad I did! This was well written, the pacing and characters were all on point. The descriptions of flying and magic, especially the solsrkce were beautifully written and It was better than what I've read in the same genre. Kirby was funny! Ioved his inner monologues and the plot is getting interesting for sure. It didn't look like it was going to go to a second or even a third book but I'm excited for them. Though I wish, we'd get them in Kirby's pov again as he's damn relatable and hilarious!
