The Dreamers: A Story of Sam Kullen Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 50 ratings

The award-winning book by fifteen year old author Oliver Dahl just got even better!

THIS SECOND EDITION RESOLVES PAST SPELLING, GRAMMATICAL, AND FORMATTING ERRORS THAT SLIPPED THROUGH AND MAY HAVE HINDERED THE READING EXPERIENCE. **Reviews mentioning such mistakes are based on the first edition or un-updated Amazon "Look Inside" Preview.**

Sam is a Dreamer. This means that he can live inside of his dreams. In them, he must stop the evil Malfix from taking over not just the Dream Realm, but earth as well. Sam's adventures bring him through races, mazes, explosions, battles, and the occasional cheesy knock-knock joke.

Okay, I actually finished this book a couple of days ago. I just am now finally getting around to reviewing it.
First off, I must commend Oliver Dahl for his wonderful writing skill and ability to catch a reader's interest from the start.
I'd love to say that this book was perfect, but it's not. No book is.
Though the vast majority tend to be very enjoyable, they're not perfect. Each book has its quirks, as does The Dreamers.
I don't like to beat people down, so I'll make this quick then move onto the good points.
The story seemed to move a little fast, but that is just my opinion. For others, it could move at a perfect rate. I, on the other hand, prefer my stories to be a little more fleshed out.
Another point to note was that there seemed to be quite a bit of mild language that I didn't expect. "Cr*p" is used, as is "fre*k*ng"; the phrase "h-e-double-hockey-sticks" is used in place of "h*ll"; the abbreviation "P.O." is used in place of "p**s*d off".
On the other hand, the story was fantastically written, the characters were great. The plot was great and I commend Oliver Dahl for writing and successfully self-publishing his masterpiece, The Dreamers.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will most definitely return to it someday.
I recommend The Dreamers to anyone 10 and up, who are interested in a fascinating young-adult science fiction novel written by a fellow teenager.

    God bless,
    Brian

(Please, do not take offense by anything written in this review. This is my honest opinion and should not be judged as fact. Also, any offense is unintentional.)

Holy wow is this book fantastic.

13 year old Sam Kullen has an over active imagination. When his mind starts to wander it really takes him out of this world! He has such an overactive imagination that he breaks through a barrier and ends up in the Dream Realm. Only those who are super imaginative are able to enter this world! Unfortunately danger is afoot. An evil Dreamer named Malfix is trying to take over the Dream Realm! If he can do this...he'll be able to take over the Earth and rule as an evil emperor of both worlds! Can Sam and the other Dreamers stop Malfix or will the Earth as we know it be changed forever?!

Honestly I loved this book. It's short, perfect for tweens and teens. Yes, there are a lot of typos and grammatical mistakes but it was written by a 13 year old for NaNoWriMo! Even with all that it's still a fantastic piece; the characters are well developed. A lot of information is crammed in through dialogue but For a book that ends in a way that could make it stand alone instead of being part of a series, I think that's totally okay.

In the authors note, he mentions that this book was written as part of a challenge to write a novel within a month, and it shows toward the end. The book started off pretty well, a relatively quick read with short chapters. It had a nice pace that didn't waste time with irrelevant information, but still explained the setting and events pretty clearly. Most of the book was like this and I enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, the last several chapters felt rushed, and after reading the author's note, I understand why. Things suddenly start to happen very fast. Major events are quickly glossed over or just briefly mentioned, without any real chain of events explained. Brian Regan's "One thing lead to another" bit is a pretty accurate description of the last few chapters. It really felt like the author was coming up with extremely convenient plot points to finish the book as quickly as possible, I'd give specific examples if they weren't huge spoilers.

I'm impressed that the book was written in only 30 days, and it's pretty good for having such a short deadline. However, it could have been much better if more time had been taken to flesh out the details where they were needed most. You can't put deadline on any form of art.

Tl;DR, Book started out great, but the ending felt rushed in order to meet a deadline.

Oliver and I are friends on twitter, but did I expect such a detailed book to come out of a young person? no not at all, but the Dreamers is an excellent read, I found myself lost in the adventure with Sam Kullen. Very well written for a person of such a young age! I am very happy with my purchase and I hope that others who read this review give this guy a chance because one day he's going to get bigger and write more books and they will definitely be better than his first! 5 stars to Oliver Dahl! and 10 stars for good parents who not only teach their kids to read but encourage them to write. Dream big Oliver! I will be looking for more books from you! -=[Angelo Havoc]=-
