Duckett & Dyer: Dicks For Hire Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 298 ratings

An SPSFC 2021 Finalist, Book Bloggers Novel of the Year 2022 Semi-Finalist, IndieInk Funniest Award Finalist, and Indie Fantasy Fund 2022 Award Winner! ...if you can believe it.

Michael Duckett is fed up with his life. His job is a drag, and his roommate and best friend of fifteen years, Stephanie Dyer, is only making him more anxious with her lazy irresponsibility. Things continue to escalate when they face the threat of imminent eviction from their palatial 5th floor walk-up and find that someone has been plastering ads all over the city for their Detective Agency.

The only problem is: Michael and Stephanie don’t have one of those.

Despite their baffling levels of incompetence, Stephanie eagerly pursues this crazy scheme and drags Michael, kicking and screaming, into the fray. Stumbling upon a web of missing people curiously linked by a sexually audacious theoretical physicist and his experiments with the fabric of space-time, the two of them find that they are way out of their depth. But unless Michael and Stephanie can put their personal issues aside and patch up the hole they tore in the multi-verse, the concept of existence itself may, ironically, cease to exist.

G.M. Nair is a crazy person who should never be taken seriously. Despite possessing both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering and a job as an Aviation and Aerospace Consultant, he writes comedy for the stage and screen, and maintains the blog MakeMomMarvel.Com. Now he is making the leap into the highly un-lucrative field of independent book publishing.

Duckett & Dyer: Dicks For Hire is his first novel, and in a world with a fair and loving god, it would be his last. Alas, he tends to continue.

G.M. Nair lives in New York City and in a constant state of delusion.

Duckett & Dyer is an exceptionally funny romp through many multiverses with memorable characters and encounters.

    Plot: 4/5
    ----------
Duckett & Dyer follows Michael Duckett and Stephanie Dyer as they enter into a mysterious situation of having started a detective agency, except neither of them actually started it. Of course, if someone starts a detective agency for you, there’s absolutely no reason to not go along with it. And if you go along with a mysteriously started detective agency, of course you’re going to find yourself learning about theoretical physics and the multiverse close up and personal.

This felt like a story that targeted me. The humor, the ridiculousness, I just loved it so much. It does feel at times like it’s meandering without real purpose until everything starts to line back up. It can feel a little like it’s not going anywhere in particular, but the book’s not long and every moment features something fun and interesting to keep your attention until it all comes together at the end! I think it’s a relatively small issue compared to the entertainment value of giant people-eating hamburgers.

    Characters: 5/5
    ------------------
I would die for Stephanie Dyer. I would also kill her if she was my real life roommate. The pairing of her with Michael Duckett leads to some excellent moments, both hilarious and emotional (yes this story’s not just jokes, there’s some great emotional moments between friends). With an excellent leading pair, G.M. Nair has also constructed a wonderful supporting cast of other characters.

    Worldbuilding: 5/5
    ----------------------
The main story exists in the real world, so to speak, so the worldbuilding really fleshes out once we get glimpses at the different universes. And, I can say without a doubt, it flourishes well with G.M. Nair’s excellent humor. We get unique and interesting worlds that put our protagonists in hilarious situations (have I mentioned the giant people-eating hamburger yet?).

    Writing: 5/5
    --------------
The humor is the strength of this story, and G.M. Nair nails it; just about every chapter had something for me to laugh about. Plenty of emotion was baked into the story revolving around the Duckett & Dyer friendship, and overall it was very well written.

    Enjoyability: 5/5
    --------------------
This book hit me just right. I loved the ridiculous moments, the emotional moments, the very idea all together. And it wrapped up into something excellent that makes me excited to continue on with the story. I loved this book and look forward to returning to Duckett & Dyer in the near future!

    OVERALL: 5/5 People-Eating Burgers

How I read this: book gifted by the author, repurchased on Amazon

Duckett and Dyer was the wackiest read ever!! It has funny, it has serious, and it even has a bigger plot coming for the next books. I am excited to read the next ones, I gotta say! If you’re looking for some fun evening reading, you should definitely pick this one up – it’s worth it. Especially if you’re a fan of the scifi comedy novel.

What I loved about this book was how easily it read, how wacky it got and how witty it was! I love G.M. Nair’s talent for putting the serious dialogue into the wacky parts as seamlessly as he did. It had just the right balance of fun and serious. The wackiness got a little confusing for me in parts, and I guess that’s where the half star went, but it may as well have been me as any other thing. I feel a little sad that I chose to read this book during a trip and then came back home as I was only halfway into it. When you come back from a vacation, a lot of hassle tends to manifest, and that’s exactly what happened to me. I didn’t manage to remain in the same frame of mind and had to abandon the book for a while, and coming back to it was tough. So I feel like maybe it’s just really unfortunate circumstances, because if I read it as one block, I would have enjoyed it so much more! (And forgotten less details!) So don’t let my missing half star judge for you. It really is a great story and I keep worrying that maybe I’m just not cutting it slack because of my own personal reasons, completely unrelated to the actual book. Ah, #bookbloggerproblems...

Anyway, the characters are quite interesting! Michael is too serious about life, and Stephanie is his exact opposite. She’s almost like a cartoon character – her behavior is ridiculous to an unrealistic degree. But as different and clashing as they are, they do make a good team… sort of. Because while Stephanie needs to be more responsible and less hyper, Michael also needs to open up his mind a little and ease up on the anxiety. As happy go lucky as Stephanie is, her own character does not prevent her from seeing the world as it is – even when it’s being ridiculously unrealistic. And it’s being way more than ridiculously unrealistic! (Hence the aforementioned ‘wacky’ part.) So at first you question the morality of what Stephanie and Michael are doing, but after a while you just… Stop. Because things are going head over heels and things are just too wild to follow. That’s when you start wondering where it will take you.

This book is a mixture of wacky and serious, sad and just way over the top and out there. It will talk about friendship, responsibility, anxiety and finding your place, but it will also have people with apple heads and giant bunny rabbits as horses. Exploding, for some of them. It’ll have details of the wackiest things, like Dogpile being there instead of Google and a number of other things you would imagine yourself if someone asked you to come up with a weird alternate reality. But they’re all really fun and make for good, dynamic reading.

I thank the author for gifting me a free copy of the ebook. This has not affected my opinion.

I had problems putting this book down and then picking it back up again. It felt like a bad episode of the tv show Sliders. It did have some good moments though and was a lot better than some books I have read by seasoned professionals. The characters alone are worth a star. Glad to hear they continue into a new book.

"NO CASE TOO TOUGH, NO CASE TOO CRAZY"!!
Now if that isn't a motto that foretells serious trouble, well, then I don't now what is! The way things get started in "Ducket & Dyer : Dicks for Hire" by G.M.Nair, let's you know our protagonists, namely, Michael Duckett and Stephanie Dyer are both about to get into some very crazy situations!
I would suggest that you do not think too hard about some parts of this book as it you will allow you to have a much more enjoyable read. I mean, it gets crazy and then some! But oh wow, is it funny, too! I found this to be a truly wonderful, bizarre and yet even caring book. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and especially enjoyed the plotting. And I also really loved that how - despite it all - how it really came together at the end in a way that made sense and also left me wanting much much more! This book definitely reminded me of several of my favorite urban fantasy authors and I can't wait to continue!

After a long time, I read a book within 2 days. It kept me riveted until the end. Mike and Stephanie, two friends, run into all sorts of trouble in this hilarious yet worrying train of suspense.
The story starts off with Mike, that relatable hard working young man who's trying very hard, admirably so, to get some. But all his plans go awry when Stephanie enters the picture. Stephanie was definitely one of those characters, I didn't know whether to love or run away from.
The story is fast-paced, moving from scene to scene with lightning speed. I didn't feel like I was getting bogged down.
There wasn't much character development but this wasn't that type of a story.
All in all, just a fun read for anyone.

Duckett and Dyer: Dicks for Hire is about as unconventional a detective novel there is, because it’s about two detectives, Michael Duckett and Stephanie Dyer, who don’t even know they’re detectives.

Someone has been advertising Duckett and Dyer as detectives, but they just have ordinary jobs, or in Dyer’s case, no job at all. Behind this odd occurrence there’s a series of disappearances that eventually cross into their lives. Eventually, Dyer pushes them to just go with the whole detective thing, despite Duckett’s concerns.

For me, the relationship between Duckett and Dyer is the hi-light of this novel. Duckett’s hesitant about pretty much everything, whereas Dyer just acts, or reacts, and the things she ends up doing are absolutely hilarious. And she never has any regrets, which adds to the comedy. The author has an excellent sense of timing when writing humor and I laughed out loud numerous times.

Minor spoilers ahead. The first half of the novel is an excellent set up of disappearances and confusion about who’s advertising Duckett and Dyer’s services. The second half goes into an unexpected direction of multi dimension travel. It’s actually really creative and I enjoyed portions of their “adventures”, but this aspect was a bit hit or miss to me from an entertainment/plot aspect, as some worlds didn’t seem to add much to the story.

Over-all, I really enjoyed Duckett and Dyer and I’m definitely going to be reading the next book in the series. Easy five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolutely hilarious dimension-hopping detective romp

Oh my gosh, why did I put off reading this for so long? I’ve had Duckett & Dyer: Dicks for Hire sitting on the Kindle for ages, and I’d never gotten around to it until now. And it is hilarious. I haven’t read many comedies—only Hitchhiker’s Guide, some Discworld, and Terry Brooks’ Magic Kingdom For Sale. Sold! and that was quite a long time ago. So it was refreshing to read some more sci-fi comedy, and G.M. Nair’s novel was an absolute riot.

I loved this book. Michael and Stephanie make a fantastic odd couple, with Michael as the more straight-laced of the pair, and Stephanie being the chaotic mess. They are genuinely very funny both together and alone, and are excellent characters that you really grow to love. And the introduction of secondary viewpoint character, Detective Calhoun, is done very well, bringing a bit more of a serious edge to the book. The comedy is well balanced with more earnest character moments that really flesh out their relationships and personalities.

The book has excellent pacing and great action. The dimension-hopping element brings with it a bit of time-looping too, but it never strays into totally mind-bending territory with it—even in the most absurdist moments (which I won’t spoil). And the ending neatly ties up all the loose threads in a very satisfying way.

The plot is absolute nonsense in the best possible way. It all stitches together believably, and draws on tropes which are sometimes played straight, and oftentimes subverted in unexpected ways. There are some great laugh-out-loud moments in this book; the comedy is a good mix of sometimes dumb, sometimes smart, and there’s a few well-placed pop-culture references too.

Everyone needs a good laugh now and then, and Duckett & Dyer: Dicks for Hire is one I’d absolutely recommend in that regard. I’ve already got the second book in the series, so I’ll be launching into that sooner rather than later. I’m keen to see what crazy shenanigans Michael and Stephanie get up to next!

4.0 out of 5 stars A roller coaster ride through the weird and wonderful

I just finished reading Ducket & Dyer: Dicks for Hire, an adventure/science fiction story written by G.M. Nair. This story revolves around a pair of life-long friends who are about to embark on an adventure. Problem is, they just don’t know it yet.

Those who read the blurb before buying will not be disappointed. This story drives through space, time, alternate universes and people to deliver non-stop action that will leave you baffled as to where exactly in this story you are.

The author’s creativity really shines when it comes to the alternate universes. While the series Sliders may have been limited by sets and budgets, his imagination and ability to set scenes to page knows no bounds!

If you want a quick read that feels like a roller coaster ride through the weird and wonderful? Then this book is for you! The author closes up all the loops nicely but leaves just enough of a story behind for the promise of a sequel which is out now! So what are you waiting for?
