The Duke of Ice (The Untouchables Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,035 ratings

Everyone Nicholas Bateman ever loved has died. Except Violet Caulfield, which must mean he never loved her. Eight years after she threw him over to marry a viscount, Nick is a widowed duke who prefers isolation. When a friend convinces him to leave his lair of self-imposed solitude, he considers taking another wife, provided she agrees to his terms: no emotional attachment of any kind.

Now widowed, Lady Violet Pendleton hopes for a second chance with the man she’s always loved. But she isn’t prepared for the desolation in his soul or the animosity he still bears toward her. Despite those obstacles, it’s clear their passion hasn’t dimmed. However, the heat between them isn’t enough to melt the Duke of Ice, and this time Violet may find herself the jilted party. Can love, once so tragically lost, finally be found?

Review

"5 out of 5 for this reader folks!
So usually this far into a series one sometimes thinks, "ok 7th book this is getting a little old!" .. NOT THIS SERIES! Each book gets better and better and this novel was no exception. I think this one may be my fave yet!"
- Front Porch Romance

"Ms. Burke keeps proving that she excels in historical romance novels. Writing beautifully, eloquently and ever enchanting. Her descriptions in her settings as well as her characters are on par, capturing you within the century she enfolds you in. From the looks of the characters down to their clothes and the scenery. She crafts her novels in a way that I can see everything in my minds eye... perfectly!
If you haven't embarked on this series, I highly recommend you do! It's one not to be missed!"
- Wit & Wonder Agency

"THE DUKE OF ICE is an incredibly emotional story; there was a lot of drama I did not expect, and I dare anyone to stop reading once the second half gets under way because this is intense!"

Darcy Burke is the USA Today Bestselling Author of captivating, compelling historical mystery and romance as well as small-town contemporary romance. Darcy wrote her first book at age 11, a happily ever after about a swan addicted to magic and the female swan who loved him, with exceedingly poor illustrations.

A native Oregonian, Darcy lives on the edge of wine country with her guitar-strumming husband, artist daughter, and imaginative son who will out-write her one day. They’re a crazy cat family with two Bengal cats, a small, fame-seeking cat named after a fruit, a senior rescue Maine Coon with attitude to spare, an adorable former stray who wandered onto their deck and into their hearts, and two bonded boys who used to belong to (separate) neighbors but chose them instead. You can find Darcy at a winery, in her comfy writing chair, folding laundry (which she loves), or having hilarious game night with the family. Nick and Violet...Sigh. A love story worthy of both of them. Nick and Violet fell in love in Bath but Violet was forced by her insufferable father to marry whom he chose for her...a disastrous marriage. But soon enough that husband died and Violet was free to live an unfettered life...until she saw Nick again 8 years later. Nick suffered because he did not know Violet was forced to marry someone other than him who was not a duke. He blamed her for running off and jilting him. And so, due to the death of the next in line for dukedom in his family, Nick did not want nor was he prepared for the rule of Duke in his family. He did not marry the first time for love and lost his wife and infant son shortly after his birth. He became the Duke of Ice because of his stoic outlook on life and his denial to be on the "marriage mart." But his best friend, Simon--the Duke of Ruin--had something else in mind for Nick, to bring him out of his icy shell and to marry again. Thus is the background for a delightful second-chance romance between Violet and Nick. The courtship was fraught with difficulties and misinformation ... but still their love persistently beckoned them to try again. You will need to get your own copy of this story to find out what happens to them both...it is a story well worth the purchase.

I just never felt good about how Violet’s life played out. It was too frustrating and seemed so unnecessary. It made for a less than satisfying romance, even though well written with an interesting plot.

Everything was “too” something. Violet’s parents were too reactive. They could have taken her away without forcing her to immediately marry a jerk. Young Violet was too much a doormat. Present day Violet was too complacent. Young Nick was too ready to give up. Present day Nick was too morose and selfish in his misery. The ton treated Simon too cruelly (he IS a Duke after all.) Diana is too emotionless and a bit of a traitor. What, everyone but she knew there was something between Nick and Violet?

There were some good moments, but I too often wished the plot had developed differently.

This book almost gave me a heart attack. It is such a great book about feeling guilty that one never deserves happiness. And it walks a fine line of making right decisions or wrong decisions and it was one of the best books in this series.

Book 8 in The Untouchables series, this is the story of Nicholas who fell into his position as duke as a result of a series of tragedies, and Violet, who has had past pain of her own.
Years before, the two were enthralled in each other and the emotion of young love. They had plans for a future together, but plans, as romance readers often find, “are invitation to disappointment”(Derek Landey).
Now, at a house party Nicholas was dragged to in support of a friend he meets Violet again, eight years later. The reintroduction of Violet into his life is not altogether pleasant. He wants Violet, but can he forgive the past and trust in a future? As for Violet, whose love for Nicholas has never waned, can she risk opening herself to him and possible rejection?
This story is filled with emotion and heat, and I read it from start to finish without putting it down. It pulled this reader into each of their hearts and minds and looked to the reasons for their actions. It also had interesting and colorful additional characters that added to the plot. I highly recommend the book and the series to romance readers. Once you start you will be pulled in as well.

I really liked the heroine, Violet. Even though she had been badly treated by her parents and her deceased husband, she still looked for the good in others and tried to help anyone that she could. When her former love turned up, I thought "Aha, here we go! This will be good." Shortly thereafter I was wishing that he would take a long walk off a short pier. He was cold, self-centered, deliberately rude, and didn't seem to change a lot throughout the book. Just when you think that there is hope for him, he does something even more dimwitted. The main reason that I kept reading this book was because of the "hero's" best friend, Simon. Every time he turned up, the story heated up. Why Violet didn't grab him and run off with him is a mystery to me! I didn't care much for this book but have already purchased the next one which is, of course, about Simon. I am hoping that it is better than this one. If it isn't, it will be my last Darcy Burke book!!

I love regency romances! I’ve read many of this author’s books and liked them, and this book was no exception. The premise was intriguing - a second chance love story between a widowed viscountess and a widower Duke. The heroine, Lady Violet Pendleton, was compelling - pretty, mature, and loyal. The hero, Nicholas Bateman, Duke of Kilve, was a little less compelling - handsome and aristocratic. They had good chemistry and a little sizzle. The storyline was simple and straightforward but entertaining. Overall, a good book, and I look forward to Diana’s and Simon’s story.

The Duke of Ice and the Duke of Ruin are untouchables. Simon (Duke of Ruin) requests his friend to a house party. At the party the Duke of Ice is once again face to face with a woman he loved 8 years ago. I loved this book! It is a slow burn romance, well developed plot featuring house party, loyal friends, interference of gossips, tragic backstories, matchmaking and a HEA. The story is well paced, readable and enjoyable!

I’ve loved every book in this series , but this one I think will always have a special place .
Nick is the Duke Of Ice , so called because of his demeanour, he’s moody , and not open to socialising in the least , seemingly the opposite to his best friend Simon the Duke Of Ruin a nickname picked up from the fact that society suspects him of his wife’s murder.
At a house party thrown by her friend ,Violet meets an old flame eight years on ,all Nick remembers is that she left him one night and was married to a Viscount soon after . A marriage she had no control over and never wanted .
How can they reconcile their differences, if that’s even possible, Nick can’t stand to loose her again .
But will her take a chance on love a second time ?

A wonderful and moving story that I think is the best so far in the Duke series , looking forward to the next

A good read, but I got a bit impatient with the Duke at the end. He took his time doing the right thing, but that was the lead up to the next book chosen by the author. Just made him seem a bit wishy-washy.
