About the author

Liz Mistry moved to West Yorkshire in the late 1980s. Her gritty crime fiction police procedural novels set in Bradford embrace the city she describes as ‘Warm, Rich and Fearless’ whilst exploring the darkness that lurks beneath. Yet, her heart remains in Scotland, where childhood tales of bogey men, Bible John and grey lady ghosts fed her imagination.
Her latest work, The Solanki and McQueen crime series is set around West Lothian, where she uses the distinctive landscape, historic heritage and Scottish culture as a backdrop to her gritty yet often humorous stories.
Struggling with clinical depression and anxiety for many years, Liz often includes mental health themes in her writing. She credits her MA in Creative Writing from Leeds Trinity University with helping her find a way of using her writing to navigate her ongoing mental health struggles. The synergy been creative and academic writing led Liz to complete a doctorate in creative writing researching the importance of representation of marginalised groups within the genre she loves.
Her husband, three children and huge extended British Indian family are a constant support to her. In her spare time, Liz loves visiting the varied Scottish and Yorkshire landscape, travelling, listening to music, reading and blogging about all things crime fiction on her website blog, The Crime Warp.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2022This was a difficult book to read. The characters are well developed and the story line consistent. My difficulty was rooted in the pure evil of a parent who plotted carefully to destroy his child and her family. The treatment of the dogs and their carers was also painful. I understand that evil exists in the world. I have witnessed it. I did finish reading the book and will consider reading other books by this author - but later. I have to digest this one first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't see all the twists coming
What a change. Normally you can work out what is coming but in this book there are so many twists and turns that it kept you on the ball. Really enjoyed this and looking forward to reading the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another amazing book
I love reading Liz Mistry’s books each one holds your with the story line. Even if the bad guys are really evil you can imagine psychopaths like them being alive in this current awful world. The latest book in DI Nikki Parekh, Dying Breath, doesn't disappoint. You feel Nikki’s frustration, anger, personal doubt and love for her family. I felt as if I was part of her world and experiencing her story.
This book 5th in the series, goes into the dark world of dog fighting and taking the final step into evil it also tells the continuing story of the terrible man who is Nikki’s biological father who killed her mother. He is a psycho who deems his blood family need to be destroyed, especially Nikki. It delves into control by evil and how her whole family and colleagues are effected. I can’t praise this book enough and in fact the whole series. I’m hoping this isn’t the end of the Nikki Parekh and that there will be more books to follow. It’s is a page turner that can’t be put down be prepared for some late night reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liz mistry never fails
Could not put it down. I love the Nikki Parekh series and this latest installment did not disappoint. I always feel so connected to the characters and totally invested in their stories.
A great read for those who like to be kept on the edge of their seats. A brilliant thriller, Liz doesn't shy away from the grittier, nastier side of society but manages to keep the human element at the forefront of all her storytelling.
If you're a fan of gritty crime thrillers with characters you can really believe in and root for then I would 10/10 definitely recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb
Wow talk about keeping you on the edge of your seat, action packed from start to finish. The team get involved in dog fighting rings when an arm is discovered, what they find out as they piece all the clues together, turns out to be one of the most disturbing cases yet. The chase is on to find the monster who is facilitating these crimes before they are faced with another disturbing find. My heart was in my mouth by the end. A brilliant read and I hope this is not the last we will hear from Nikki and the team.
