He thought she was weak.
She thought he was dangerous.
Both were wrong.

Layton Parks keeps her life simple. That’s until her new neighbor moves in. He’s insanely attractive, impossibly moody and frustratingly arrogant. The last thing she needs is someone like Kane Thatcher bulldozing into her uncomplicated existence.

Kane Thatcher is his own man, with his own mind. He doesn’t need to be thinking about the quietly hot woman in the apartment opposite his. She’s not his kind of hook up, not at all what he’s interested in. Yet, he can’t stop thinking about her.

It should be wrong. It would never work. Their lives are as opposite as their front doors. So why is his darkness attracted to her light like a moth to an open flame? And will they be able to weather the onslaught that’s heading for them?

AJ Love - sentence maker, cool mum and proud Ravenclaw.

Born with an overactive imagination, and a tendency to day dream, AJ Love fell into writing stories from an early age. Now, as a romance author, she spends her nights making sense of the love stories in her head.

When she's not writing until the early hours of the morning--with maybe one too many gins in her--AJ spends her time chasing her wild child toddler around, and trying to get her pre-teen son to take a shower.

She also forms one half of the AJ Love and D Breeze partnership, which was born out of a mutual hate for peeling potatoes and socialising, and a love for wine, cheese and make-believe.

AJ Love crosses all sub-genres of Romance, loves her job, and aims to be sitting with her laptop well into her golden years.

Funny, thrilling and loving. I read it all in one sitting. And I really don’t mind the few hours of sleep that I am missing. The read was that entertaining. He was perfect, she was in need of perfection. Wonderful matchup!!

The blurb called my name but getting to know realistic and uniquely flawed Layton and Kane was the cherry on this sundae.

I love that Layton is a hard worker who despite her job, isn't rich nor out of reach for the reader to understand her. Kane like his leading lady, is far from perfect and try as he might that he won't get involved in Laytons' life, he's right there time and time again.

Their story is as original as they are. It's got bits of humor, incredible characters, believable progression, the back and forth that I for one love, seeing how life situations and love can be a maturing combination is just the recipe to have you wanting more that just a bite. You want to get lost in their world. I received an ARC for an honest and voluntary review.

There’s no doubt a lot of young adults make choices and/or mistakes they soon come to regret. Even At Your Darkest features a main character that has to live with her poor choices and the trouble they get her into. Lucky for her, there’s a reluctant Alpha male in the story that comes to her rescue. This standalone is also a romantic suspense, that moves at a fast pace, with lots of heavy action in between. It has a good storyline, that had me biting my nails, and was filled with secondary characters that were so entertaining they should have their own stories.

Layton Parks lived an ordinary life back home in Louisiana. She was going to college and following the life her mother had planned out for her; graduating, marriage and children. Until she decided to drop out of school and move to Texas after running into a friend, McKenna, that told her she had a fabulous job, making a ton of money dancing. So she packed up and followed Kenna to White Caps, Texas, to discover the promised job wasn’t exactly as she’d been led to believe. A year later she’s working two jobs to make ends meet, living in a crappy apartment, and has more or less given up on life. She just takes every bad thing that comes her way as if she deserves it.

“I don’t fight for what I want in life because what’s the point?”

Kane Thatcher moved to White Caps to open a garage, something he thought he’d do with his brother, Tommy. Unfortunately he’s not there to help him, Tommy died three years ago, and Kane blames himself for his death. He’s filled with self-loathing, unfriendly and kinda scares everyone. Especially his new neighbor, who seems scared to death of him. When he helps her out, more out of pity than anything else, they begin a strange friendship of sorts.

“I know that you’re scared: of everything going on, of fighting for yourself, and of me. I want to change that.”

Things take a turn for the worse when Kane finds out Layton works at a strip club run by a shady character that sets his sights on Layton. And when McKenna disappears, there’s more danger involved for all of them.

AJ Love did a great job on this story, the plot and characters were strong. The story was written well with many emotions. Layton and Kane may have had this issues but they were made for each other, they were drawn to one another. Their connection and chemistry was strong, they wee good together.
I enjoyed this story. Thanks, AJ Love. Great work :)

Even at your Darkest is my first story by AJ Love and I will definitely be looking out for more to come. This story of falling and accepting love in the darkest state of mind and even at a rough time in life left me an emotional mess.

Layton Parks life seems to be out of her control. She's an amazing character who literally works her ass of and it still seems as if everything around her is falling apart. I love her attitude and that attitude also catches the attention of her sexy next door neighbor. Will she be able to handle all the unexpected complications in her life or could it destroy the happiness she has found in her life?

Kane Thatcher's hard edge drew me in from the start. He is a broken man, he is holding on to a tragic moment from his past and it has made it difficult for him to open up to others. That's until he meets his new neighbor and he finds himself wanting to get close to her, he starts with finding a way into her apartment. Kane's protectiveness, love and the sexual desire that rolls off of that man had me falling in love with him.

Even at your Darkest is an emotional rollercoaster of a read. Warning: there is a very dark scene that left me shredded to pieces. I wanted to scream and I have to admit that tears rolled down my eyes. An amazing story of falling in love, letting go of your past, forgiveness and what it means to have true friends in one's life.

This book! It's so powerful and written with almost a poetic light touch. My first book by AJ Love, but it won't be my last, she's a truly gifted word master.

This was my second read by this author and I can say I really really enjoyed it!
Layton is one kick butt main character.. she's fiesty.. sassy.. confident and independent.
Kane is serious.. grumpy..a mamas boy.. and feels like he doesn't deserve happiness.
Both struggling with how things have gone in their past they aren't willing to let anyone in and both have their defences up but things start to change slowly giving us a rollercoaster of hotness.. angst and some truly hilarious times!
I loved all characters in this story not just the main ones.. I could do with more from those MC members too 😉
I will be honest and say that I feel that certain parts were rushed and I could have read more but overall this was a fab essay read for me with some fab characters!
Look forward to reading more by AJ Love over time.
