You are not failing if your baby keeps on crying!

Do you want to know how to:

- Respond compassionately to your baby's crying?

- Understand how feelings affect 'cluster feeding' and frequent night waking?

- Accurately read your baby's cues?

Do you want to support your baby to:

- Sleep soundly without 'self-soothing' or 'controlled crying'?

- Stay connected with their true self?

- Heal from birth trauma and daily stresses?

In this deeply detailed and informative book, Dr Marion Rose offers the answers to all these questions, drawing on the Aware Parenting approach, which was created by Aletha Solter, PhD.

The Emotional Life of Babies explains how crying isn't only a way for babies to communicate their needs. It's also how they heal from daily stresses and larger trauma, as long as we are holding them with compassionate presence. In this way, babies can return to deep relaxation, leading to more restful and restorative sleep.

With a research background including studying mothers and babies for her PhD at Cambridge University, Dr. Marion Rose invites you to make your own observations as a parent. In this way, you can differentiate between the two types of crying and between relaxed presence and dissociation. You can also gather evidence and receive reassurance that your baby really does feel more connected, more present, and more relaxed with Aware Parenting.

From two decades of working with thousands of parents as an Aware Parenting instructor, and a decade before as a psychotherapist, Dr. Marion Rose supports you to be compassionate with yourself on the journey to transform your parenting.

The Emotional Life of Babies includes inspiring true stories from parents who have experienced the life-changing effects of being with their babies' feelings. Discover the powerful role you can play in shaping the foundations of your baby's emotional life so that they can feel at home in their body, as the aware and present being they were born to be.

Praise for The Emotional Life of Babies

"I believe this is the most fundamental learning of our times. Somehow in 20 years of being in the mental health field I didn't know this vital information and unconsciously yearned for it - the anatomy of feelings. Not some wishy-washy new age concept. No, the exact patterns within which our feelings arise, what happens in the body, and how to respond to them." ─ Clare-Louise Brumley, PhD, OLY

“In The Emotional Life of Babies, Marion Rose shares her amazing ability to perceive the world through a baby’s eyes. She offers a gentle invitation for parents to put aside preconceived ideas about babies and learn to interpret cues that are often overlooked or misunderstood. With deep compassion, she explains how parents’ own childhood experiences can cause them to misinterpret what their babies are trying to tell them. Parents who follow her advice will enhance their baby’s emotional development and strengthen attachment.” ─ Aletha Solter, Ph.D., founder of Aware Parenting

Raising children is hard, finding time to read while raising them or babies is even harder. Yet, this book will change your life and give you so many tools and piece of knowledge to transform the way you live, interact, and respond to your baby. Marion writes with such compassion and empathy if you have raised babies before and without this information. This book will be my always recommended book for parents with a new baby! This was such a wonderful and healing book from my own childhood too. It gave me so much more awareness, my experiences, and helping with my children. Everyone should know the information in this book! There would be so many less people carrying around trauma cause the best time to release trauma and emotional baggage is when it happens.

Wish I would have found this and Aware Parenting years ago! Would have helped immensely in the early years.

This book is an amazing book to read alongside Aletha Solter’s books on Aware Parenting. Deeply compassionate, full of real examples this book dives deeper into Aware Parenting with babies. I love this approach and Marion’s book clearly and warmly will help guide you deeper into its practice with the babies/ children in your life. Easy to navigate, full of questions and answers, and loving reminders throughout to drop the guilt and shame and be compassionate towards ourselves as parents. I have re-read it several times and have post-it’s sticking out all over it!! Highly recommended if Aware Parenting resonates with you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone who raises children or works with them

While reading "The emotional life of babies" I constantly thought, "How different would my child be if I had this knowledge when he was a baby? How different would our world be if we allowed our babies and children to express their feelings freely?"
An amazing book, which gives us great insight into how healing it is for our babies to do what parents dread the most: crying.
Marion Rose explains in detail how parents can distinguish the reasons why a baby cries, and then either meet the need that is behind the cry, or give the baby the time, space, and presence for them to express all the feelings that make them uncomfortable.
Reading the baby's perspective on every situation, and how our methods of stopping the cry affect them and cause their dissociation from their feelings was illuminating.
Marion also offers moments of compassion and self-reflection after every new piece of information, inviting the readers to let go of any possible guilt for their past practices, and constantly mentions how important it is for parents, especially mothers, to receive support in order to be able to be present for their babies.
A book that must be in the bookcase of every parent, every specialist who works with children.

Thank you Marion. The world definitely needs more space for crying.

I am a better parent because of Aletha Solter and Marion Rose. Listening to crying in loving supportive arms when all my babies needs are met have been a game changer. I’m so grateful that my midwife suggested the Aware Baby book when I was just a few weeks post partum, which then brought me to Marion Rose books.
I want to shout from the rooftops to all parents struggling with sleep, fussy babies, control patterns and constant feeding. This book is INCREDIBLE, worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marion’s work has changed our lives forever!
Reviewed in Australia on September 20, 2023
I was recommended by a friend to Marion’s work when my first baby was 10 months old. I was practicing Classical Attachment Parenting and I couldn’t understand why my baby wasn’t sleeping. He wasn’t having his naps during the day any more and was sleeping very poorly during the night. I was exhausted. Through Marion’s work, I was able to identify that he had a breastfeeding control pattern. When I started to apply what I learnt from Marion about listening to his feelings, everything shifted, and he (and I) started to sleep much
better. With Marion, I’ve also learnt how to be compassionate with myself, especially while learning how to parent my baby with much more awareness to his (and my own) emotions.
Marion also supported me with my second baby, who had developed a thumb-sucking control pattern. Through receiving one-to-one support from her, Marion helped me to understand the reasons behind my baby’s control pattern. Marion supported me and my partner in reflecting back what we could do for ourselves to enable more emotional capacity so our daughter would feel emotionally safer to express her feelings to us. We’ve applied what Marion taught us and very soon we could notice a difference in our daughter as she started expressing her feelings much more. We also started to feel much more compassionate to our own feelings whenever she would suck her thumb.
Marion’s work is also so beautiful in supporting mothers to be more compassionate with themselves and this is definitely for me, one of the most unique things that I’ve learnt from her approach. Learning a new way to parent our children can be hard to take in as we might find ourselves feeling guilty about how we used to do it before. Marion has this beautiful talent of offering all this information while holding the parents with so much love and compassion, that melts the guilt away. It’s very hard to find someone with the ability to do this, and I see so many instructors like me, who work close to Marion, who are all learning this beautiful Aware Parenting way from her. Thank you Marion, your beautiful work and dedication impacts so many families around the world in finding much more connection and compassion in their homes.

5.0 out of 5 stars EVER NOTICED HOW MUCH BETTER YOU FEEL AFTER A GOOD CRY WITH SOMEONE'S WARM ATTENTION?
Reviewed in Australia on September 25, 2023
    Well.......Babies do too!

I met Marion when our daughters were a few years old and was delighted to discover we were on similar parenting paths. it's fantastic she's bringing the JOY of parenting this way to a wider audience via this book.

Logistically, I really love the layout of the information presented. There's a (very) comprehensive q&a section toward the rear of the book and every question is listed in the Table of Contents, so it's easy to look up a question you might want answered (and if you are tired and stressed, this is helpful).

There's also an extensive section of reviews right up front from people who have benefited from Marion's work directly, which is very comforting.

Dotted throughout, there are 'self compassion moments' in highlighted boxes, encouraging anyone who hasn't been doing things this way to be kind to themselves, as this information just hasn't been available in Western society and one can't do what one doesn't know. I love that Marion is as supportive of parents as of their babies.

From personal experience of parenting this way, it certainly helps with sleep.....and with having more fun.

And Marion's information comes with tons of academic research, if that helps to know (her PhD was with mothers and babies) and lived experience as a parent of a young adult and a teen . Marion helped me personally with some deep re-parenting of myself. Her work was fundamental in changing my inner dialogue from constantly harshly critical to warm and loving.....and the tone of that is present throughout the book.

The information contained here is life-changing. I'm not exaggerating! I will go further and say it has the potential to be world changing. Humans raised with respect and access to all their feelings have so much more space for thinking new thoughts than those of us jammed up with every hurt from our birth experience onwards.
