Antimage: An Isekai LitRPG Adventure (Ends of Magic Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,391 ratings

A scientist from another world. A mage seeking deadly knowledge. A power that could topple an empire.

Nathan's life was defined by labs and lectures until an Archmage yanked him into Davrar and made him a tantalizing offer: master magic in exchange for Earth's scientific secrets. Yet, Nathan can't shake off the feeling that darker truths lurk beneath such promises.

The world of Davrar is a dangerous place teeming with dungeons and monsters – ruled by levels, Talents, and a near-infinite progression of power. Nathan will need to rely on himself to survive, forging alliances and taking every advantage he can get against those that seek to control him.

His unique capacity to counteract magic gives him an unprecedented edge, making him a beacon of resistance against those who wield magic as a weapon of control.

Armed with intellect and an emerging power that could dismantle the very foundations of Davrar's society, Nathan emerges not as a mere student of magic, but as its ultimate adversary: the Antimage.

Nathan is summoned to Davrar for his valuable Insights pertaining to science and engineering.

He's a stem cell biology PhD student, but his understanding is as far-reaching as his insatiable thirst for knowledge. Math. Physics. Biology. Chemistry. Nathan could teach college classes on all of them.

In a world where Insights unlock very real power, Nathan soon realizes his esoteric knowledge for the weapon it is. He can leverage it to both teach new forms of magic and recreate Earth technology.

But Nathan won't be content with using what he already knows from Earth. Davrar is a broken world with a forgotten past. Another world hangs above it, always visible, its continents and oceans shifting behind the blue of the sky. It's a world decimated by apocalyptic Endings that usher in calamity and stomp out civilization, cyclically resetting progress. The many races on Davrar all struggle to advance as far as they can to withstand the inclement destruction... but all have failed.

Nathan intends to understand it all.

Endings be damned.

About the Author

Alexander Olson first knew he wanted to be a scientist when his dad taught him how to capture hydrogen gas with foil, batteries, and water. He grew up in Colorado, got his bachelors in chemistry and biology from a small engineering school in Southern California and his PhD in biochemistry from a larger school in Boston. Now he works full-time in science, the closest thing to magic he can achieve in this world. His love of magic came from escaping into fantastical stories as a child, where he could explore worlds that stretch to the limits of imagination. He first delved into creating his own stories by running multiple tabletop roleplaying games. Eventually he decided to write the story he wanted to read.

Phil Thron is a classically trained actor who has worked on stage, TV, and behind the microphone for several decades. A voracious reader and a devoted chatterbox, bringing these skills to the world of audiobook narration was a natural evolution, and for several years now, a wonderful obsession. Now, nothing gives him more pleasure than bringing authors' worlds to life and getting listeners to "lean in." When he's not recording from his home studio in New Jersey, Phil can be found playing tennis, reading or listening to books, watching movies, spending time with his family, and, perhaps, playing guitar. Badly. Really badly. Don't laugh, it's just an unfortunate truth.

Salk's Disciple is the author of the Ends of Magic series.

A wonderful opening to an out of this world adventure. Loved the character development and world building. Can't wait to read book 2.

I really felt like I could relate to the main character and I didn't think I'd enjoy this book as much as I did. A magical world where the Mc is barred from magic? It sounds endlessly frustrating, but it's actually really fun. I think the decisions made make sense and having a scholar barbarian instead of an overpowered mage is surprisingly fun.

This book is pretty well written and I enjoyed the characters. The premise felt fresh. The only reason I dropped a star was due to the author's tendency to ramble about scientific minutiae. I really didn't need a page and a half about magnetic fields. But overall it was a good read and will check out the next in the series.

I think this book is really good. It has a lot of action, adventure, and real characters that come alive. I really like the anti-magic that the main character has and also his personality. He cares about people he cares about his cause and he cares about the world he's in. The only part I didn't really enjoy was the construction of guns I always think it's a little anachronistic when there's a person trying to bring peace or diffuse tensions and war when they create a projectile weapon in a world that is previously not had it or doesn't use it fully. I feel like that can lead to a lot more unrest in a magical world rather than help the person who created it. Just like on Earth; where bombs and guns were created and if they hadn't been, it would probably be much easier to keep order and then keep mass killings from being a thing. Just a little part that annoyed me, but everything else about the world is still worth reading.

A scientist gets transported to a new world--and the first chapters are amazing.

I love the descriptions and magic of this story. The world-building is well done.

My only thing, I wished happened, was that the Main Character focused on building a college in the new world because of their Earth background and lean on the adventuring path. They want to change the world, so logically, it would seem that creating an educational institution is the better way.

I was surprised by their choices towards that end, but this is not (yet) "a revenge story", although the desire for revenge is a great theme. Thankfully other things are going on.

MC's Anti-magic skill is well described and keeps me loving to see it in action.

The Archmage from the first chapter is a phenomenal antagonist and I look forwards to whatever else may happen because of them.

I plan to read the next in the series.

He's a scientist who's been abducted, and he's thirsty as hell!

Seriously though, this has all of the makings of an enjoyable read except for the MC's bizarre thirst issues. Doesn't really matter what it is, but he wants it. Passionately.

    Knowledge, check.
    Vengeance, check.
    Destruction, check.
Men, women and children... <cringe> check.

The last is particularly jarring due to how the author portrays said thirst for people. For example, having been in a position of educational authority as a graduate student he recognizes that lusting after his young adult classmates is wrong. He then proceeds to undress them with his eyes and talk about their bangin' figures. Then he'll check out the rippling abs of his classmates' parents and comment about how hot their dads are. But also, don't forget the rocking curves of their moms. Next sentence, completely other non-related topic and it's as if all of those strangely intimate and thirsty details of everyone around him are completely forgotten.

I get it, the MC has a non-traditional sexual orientation. I don't have a problem with that, in fact it can be nice to see some diversity in fantasy fiction genre. The weirdness is in how randomly it is inserted into the narrative, almost as if it was an afterthought that was added later and that it is frequently directed towards young adults. I think the kids are 18+ but the MC frequently mentions how they are too young and it is sooooo wrong <wink wink>.

If you can get beyond that, there is a pretty good tale in here even if it is a bit hackneyed. Evil, ethnocentristic empire committing acts of genocide and slavery? Yep, it's there. Underdog MC using otherworldly information for a competitive edge? Present. School arc with acts of camaraderie and team building? Also there.

It's definitely not poorly written and the good editing shows through with a few exceptions; It's not a bad story by any means. However, if you shake the trope dice and let them roll, you have probably read this story before but likely without the egregious and jarring creeping on everyone...

All around good first book, nothing particularly ground breakingly new, just slight variations on the tropes done well. The writing and editing is also done well, with little to no grammatical errors or extra editing needed. Characters feel believable and real. World immersive and just overall a fun read. Looking forward to more of this series
