Ends of Magic protagonist

Nathan is summoned to Davrar for his valuable Insights pertaining to science and engineering.

He's a stem cell biology PhD student, but his understanding is as far-reaching as his insatiable thirst for knowledge. Math. Physics. Biology. Chemistry. Nathan could teach college classes on all of them.

In a world where Insights unlock very real power, Nathan soon realizes his esoteric knowledge for the weapon it is. He can leverage it to both teach new forms of magic and recreate Earth technology.

But Nathan won't be content with using what he already knows from Earth. Davrar is a broken world with a forgotten past. Another world hangs above it, always visible, its continents and oceans shifting behind the blue of the sky. It's a world decimated by apocalyptic Endings that usher in calamity and stomp out civilization, cyclically resetting progress. The many races on Davrar all struggle to advance as far as they can to withstand the inclement destruction... but all have failed.

Nathan intends to understand it all.

Endings be damned.

Alexander Olson first knew he wanted to be a scientist when his dad taught him how to capture hydrogen gas with foil, batteries, and water. He grew up in Colorado, got his bachelors in chemistry and biology from a small engineering school in Southern California and his PhD in biochemistry from a larger school in Boston. Now he works full-time in science, the closest thing to magic he can achieve in this world.

His love of magic came from escaping into fantastical stories as a child, where he could explore worlds that stretch to the limits of imagination. He first delved into creating his own stories by running multiple tabletop roleplaying games. Eventually he decided to write the story he wanted to read.

If you're a fan of litrpg adventures, this is definitely the book for you! Great writing, fun worldbuilding, and continuous development. Great story!

The first two books are excellent. Our protagonist is a little overpowered, but in an interesting way. Instead of simply being the best at everything he’s given one unique skill, plus some advantages from his life on earth that allow him to immediately punch above his weight class. Better than that, though is he’s clever and smart, weighing his actions and using what he knows to help himself and his friends. I was originally turned on to this series by reading a Reddit thread Litrpg books where the characters are actually smart and I think the series very much fits that bill.

Nice characterization too. His teammates are flushed out and interesting characters in their own right which is unfortunately too rare in this genre.

Perhaps best of all the world feels fully realized in a way that is again too rare for the genre. A nice level of description, which lets you picture the settings. Things like the existence of dungeons have actual explanations in the law of the world. They’re not just added on because every one of these books has to have dungeons.

I can’t wait to read the next book. It feels like things are just getting interesting.

The story is good, grammer and readability are as well. I enjoy reading it. My biggest issue is the MC is getting annoying to read. He grandstands often, gate keeps Insights about Earth because he knows better, has an anti magic class but somehow gains a powerful magic perception ability, he's a PHD student but is somehow the greatest mind pushing knowledge on Earth (the spell that brought him was programmed to find such) he's too good and mature at everything, and just so much more. It just feels like the story was decided and then an MC was written for it if that makes sense. Also, he constantly refers to men and women as hot and such but like a highschool kid would. It's annoying because it keeps happening oddly, usually for his teammates parents, and there is no romance. It's like the author is trying to shoehorn in bisexual commentary so they can have a tag.

I enjoyed reading it and like the plot and characters but the MC is just bugging me as well as his class. I'll read the next one but am starting to skim skip the MCs dialogue more and more.

This has been a phenomenal read! Lots of thought put into the story and great attention to detail! The working of knowledge from earth into a magical system without the prior knowledge has been great!

Just awesome. I love that the progression is well paced and you see the characters powers growing steadily. I also enjoyed the last battle and the new enemies Nathan earned. I do miss his teenage girl crush comments tho.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 8, 2024
My main issue with the first book was lengthy science lectures that were boring (and coming from someone that reads detailed slice of life). That is dealt with in this one, the science grounding to magic is still there but no grating lectures.

Power comes along nicely, the group grown closer and I’ve really come to care about them. Interesting setup for the next book, overall loved it.
