Enemies in Earnest: A Small Town, Forced Proximity, Enemies to Lovers Romance Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 71 ratings

Acacia Ashley has one love: the written word. Specifically the rich, earthy, prose of Mr. Ernest Hemingway. Her love for Hemingway goes so deep that she opened a bar in his honor. Every year in July she plays host to Hemingway Days in Candy Cane Key, and every year she has to stay on guard in case Edwin Wheeler decides once again to find a way to ruin the solemnity of the occasion.

Edwin Wheeler doesn't care about books or old men, but the sea? The sea is where he spends his days in search of the almighty dollar. But when he grows bored of plying tourists with fruity drinks, he’s often found needling the resident bookworm, Acacia. She's hated him ever since the incident five years ago. Why does getting a rise out of her give him a bit of a rise as well?

When the bell tolls signaling approaching stormy weather that threatens both of their businesses, the pair realizes a farewell to arms may be the best way to avoid a dangerous summer.

Willow has always had a penchant for weaving tales. Whether it was horror stories for her bunkmates during sleep away camp, or full blown novels, the written word is always something that Willow has been drawn to.

A Chicago girl born and raised, you will find that most of her stories are either based in, or somehow tie back to the city she knows and loves. Her loyalties lie on the North-Side, as she proclaims she is a Cubs fan, and a fan of anyone playing against the White Sox. She can also be found regularly rooting for the Illini, when she isn’t being forced by her husband to betray her loyalty to the Blue and Orange in favor of a weekend cheering on the Spartans.

A marketer by day, and a writer by night, she can be found feeding her coffee addiction at the Green Mermaid (otherwise known as Starbucks), spending way too much time on TikTok, or trying to convince others she's a long lost Gilmore Girl.

Acacia runs the bar on Candy Cane Key, while Edwin pilots a charter boat for parties. They start of as opposing forces after a misconception five years ago. During a major storm and forced talks, they start to show their attraction and cravings for each other. The characters are well developed, with great backstories, determination, entertaining situations and banter. The storyline has drama, irritating remarks, twists, surprises, revelations, danger, steam, progresses perfectly to a heartwarming ending. Loved the chemistry and friends that support them.

Acacia and Edwin have been at each other's throats for five years and the reason is so petty as to almost be ridiculous. Acacia owns a bar where she honors her favorite author on the anniversary of his birth every year. Her Hemingway celebration is very popular among their tiny island until one year when Edwin and his charter boat business ruined the moment. Acacia has hated him ever since. But things start to change and they begin to bury the hatchet. Things develop as they tend to do in a romance novella and a happily ever after is achieved.

While this is a cute and quick read, I had a hard time liking the heroine. She was petty and mean. She'd spent five years belittling Edwin, which she complained people used to do to her. She liked to say that he gave it back to her just as hard, but I didn't find that was the case. He let her barbs roll off him more times than not and never retaliated in kind. Did he tease her? Of course. It wouldn't be an enemies to lovers trope without the banter. But Acacia acted as a bully more often than not, and I thought Edwin should have walked away from her long ago. She was ridiculously selfish, especially as a hurricane barreled toward them and she refused to let go of her Hemingway party. Edwin, on the other hand, was sweet and completely book boyfriend worthy. His protective nature and gentleness made up for her stupidness in this story.

Edwin and Acacia are like oil and water, constantly butting heads the last five years. Like most people in the same predicament, the reason is petty. Edwin spends the days toting around tourists on his boat and irritating Acacia when he can.

A storm rolls in, it is like a change in tides, a hot kiss and both are looking at each other differently.

Edwin and Acacia were the perfect enemies to lovers couple. They butt heads all the time and after 5 years Edwin wants to mind the bridge even if it means never speaking to her again. The attraction between the two is off the charts. But one hot kiss changes everything and suddenly they can't seem to stay away. she has been hurt before so having her admit she loves him back might be the biggest fight Edwin has ever faced and he's not letting her go the second time around. This story keeps you on your toes until the very end.

Acacia and Edwin have battled each other for the last 5 years. It seems that Acacia has an honorary party to honor Hemingway on the anniversary of his birthday. Edwin seems to have crashed it 5 years ago and they have butt heads since. When a hurricane moves in it takes only one kiss to change the outlook of how these two feel about one another. They move from enemies to friends to lovers. Find out if Acacia ever lets Edwin into her heart. There are surprises, drama, danger, and steam. I enjoyed this cute story.

I really tried to read this book, but it is very disjointed and makes no sense. I made it to chapter 3 page 23 and finally gave up.

Acacia, is a character that is VERY unlikeable and holds a grudge for far too long (5 years). Edwin is likeable, but allows Acacia to be very means to him for way too long (5 years).

After reading the book part way I still don't understand it.

The candy cane keys series has been a series that ai love, but I'm going to have to skip reading the rest of this book and move on to the book in the series. I don't know if the author is new at writing or had one too many while writing this, but I wouldn't recommend reading this book.
