Enemies of the Empire: (Foundation of the Dragon Series: Book 3): A Gripping Historical War Fiction Book about Britannia and the Roman Empire. Kindle Edition
AD 383 Magnus Maximus is on the verge of usurping the Western Empire, but the greater fight will be for his legitimacy. As the empire teeters around him, its enemies getting stronger, he must navigate the narrow path between diplomacy and military aggression. But is the empire still strong enough to bear another internal conflict?
His wife Elen is sworn to protect her mountainous corner of Britannia. Magnus taking an army across the empire will leave her loved ones vulnerable, and so her husband turns into her enemy. Her damaged brother, easily malleable by powerful men both opposed and allied to Magnus, has become a pawn in the circles of power, but no one knows where his loyalties lie. Least of all him.
Three emperors enter the final conflict, but will the empire itself survive?

About the author

Robb grew up in North Wales, but straight after school, left to travel the world. With over a hundred countries visited over nearly thirty years, he now calls Prague his home. Wales is where his heart is, though. He knows what the word ‘hiraeth’ means.
For the day job, he has the unbelievable privilege of test driving and writing about classic Porsches and Ferraris and the occasional crazy off-roader.
His dream was always to write novels. It has taken him a few long years to get here, but writing about the deep history of his homeland is very special.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI get lost in this series in a good way. I lose track of time and am sad when I reach the end. I hope this series continues!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseReally enjoying the series so far, sad to see a few of the characters that didn’t survive this book go but looking forward to seeing what happens to those that remain. Knocking a star off for the lazy editing/proofing.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseYou may know the characters and the outcome, but the author has woven the various motivations with skill. Enjoyed the detail of martial life in a Roman legion.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2024Format: KindleBook 3 picks up 1.5 years after "Usurpers", following Magnus' grab for imperial power.
Robb paints such vivid, atmospheric pictures that I felt like I was in the middle of the story, instantly captivated by Roman politics and power play, intrigue, treason and conspiracy.
I especially like his counterpart Elen, master manipulator, key to his success, yet potential cause for his downfall, with her own agenda for the good of her people in Britannia. I'm sorry to see some characters go, but the end hints at more good things to come.
A great addition to the series- can't wait for the next installment!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific blend of Roman history and Welsh myth
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseRoman general Magnus, who has never lost a battle, aims for the the ultimate conquest - to become the emperor himself. Elen, his wife, cares only about protecting her native Britannia from invaders (as her ancestors have done before her). Magnus' military skills tempered by Elen's diplomacy should make them invincible but it is a loveless marriage - and a Roman wife has no voice. Can either of them achieve their aims, and manage to protect their young family?
Brilliant series, can't wait for the next one.
