- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2017Format: KindleAt times slow moving storyline filled with treachery, royalty warring with trolls, picts, dragons, magic and witches. Oh yeah..some unnecessary sensual stimulated scenes.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI gave this book four stars, not because it wasn’t delightful reading, it was. There were two chapters about the downing and rescuing of a dragoon that sounded like there were two different outcomes for the rider and the dragon. At times it was almost a spoof on fantasy as the characters were sometimes overly forgiving of someone trying to kill them. The dragons and fairies, however, rescued all from their human follies. I also felt the prophesy could have been highlighted a bit more. If you love dragons, this is a must read!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseKenna's"Engaging The Dragon" is a great fantasy novel with intriguing characters. If you enjoy romance, magic, dragons and fantasy stories this book is for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2017Format: KindleA pleasant, playful, poetic foray into fantasy, McKinnon's novel feels like a faraway place in which to cozily escape. I was especially enchanted by the dragons who spout epic poetry and periodically hold council, as well as human apocalyptic undertones somewhat akin to the Planet of the Apes, replacing apes with trolls, picts, and ferries. I would have liked to have seen more character development, particularly in the dialogue, and more literary tension throughout. Also, the story is sometimes more told than shown. However, overall a fun, enjoyable read and delightful, talented, imaginative tale with nice description in many places. Recommended for frequent fantasy readers.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2018I gave “Engaging the Dragon,” five stars because I like dragons and Kenna McKinnon wrote a great story about them. I admit that in the beginning, I had to reread a few pages to get the characters sorted out. However, once I did get it sorted out, I enjoyed the ride. Character descriptions, the intrigue and the dragons (I really liked the dragons) although a fantasy, were all made believable. I highly recommend Engaging the Dragon.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2017Format: KindleMcKinnon's "Engaging the Dragon" is a lovely, sensuous, and tactile fantasy novel with rich characters and a bit of intrigue. I say tactile and sensuous because it's filled with little details missing from a lot of fantasies that makes the world feel more real, from the description of a bath, to the reins made of fire on the dragons. It's all very romantic, and you can tell as you read, the author is enjoying telling the story as much as you are enjoying reading it, and the luscious setting with its trolls, magic, and subterfuge is a nice escape in the hot summer. If you like whimsy and intrigue, and sensual writing, you'd miss out by ignoring this pretty book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2017Format: KindleThis novel offers a wealth of characters of differing species, including humans, fairies, witches, and dragons. They are all players in a sweeping drama of war, love, and betrayal. Draxx is a planet upon which an Earth spaceship crashed in the past. The survivors occupy a part of the land and build a thriving kingdom. Wars between rival lands become increasingly costly while the current king is unwell. Palace intrigue ensures, complete with love affairs, battles, and subterfuge. The main character, Princess Almere, married to the king's son, is deeply involved in all the king's politics and becomes a major contributor to the new cause. With the help of dragons, of course. Wonderful, lovely, helpful dragons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating tale of kings, princes, and dragons
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI readily admit that this is not my usual reading fare, but I liked the great cover, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did, because this story took me back to my younger days, when I loved stories about days of old when knights were bold. Okay, there are no knights in this book, but it has everything else, kings, queens, princes and princesses fairies, and of course, dragons! With Trolls and Picts thrown in for good measure, all the ingredients were in place for a great read, and so it was.
Far across the galaxy on a planet once colonized by humans, we are treated to a tale involving wars between the different races, intrigue in the royal palace, and brother plotting against brother. It's a rousing tale that held me in its thrall from start to finish.
Kenna McKinnon has created a world that is wholly believable and in my opinion, suitable for readers of all ages. A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining read. 5 stars from me, well deserved.
