Never Have I Evan (Games We Play in Granville) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,721 ratings

Never Have I Ev... Wait, what was the question again?!

What happens when an ill-advised party game makes it obvious I've still got my V-card?

Embarrassment. A lot of embarrassment.

Especially when the sexy, older guy at the party who witnessed the whole thing turns out to be someone I have to see every week. Not to mention my best friend's cousin.

He's not only straight, but way out of my league.

It's going to be so awkward for both us.

Or awesome...if his protective nature and flirty attempts to teach me how to date lead to the kind of tutoring that lives in my fantasies. But how likely is that to happen? I'm not known as the sweet, naive one among for my friends for nothing.

I'm probably imagining those looks he throws my way. Probably projecting my own want onto his expression.

But...what if I'm not?

Never Have I Evan features an inexperienced, shy tech geek, an assistant football coach who oozes confidence, a town full of quirky, nosy residents, and sexual awakening and discovery themes!

Dawson is Calista's cousin who played college football until an accident railroaded that one night. He's lucky to be alive after what happened. Now he's in Granville as the assistant coach looking for a fresh start. He meets Evan at one the parties not realizing that Evan was trying to flirt with him. Evan hadn't realized Dawson, who at the time, thought himself straight didn't realize he was being hit on.

Evan's a sweetheart who I cherish. He helps run his grandpa's hardware store barely getting paid and helps the tech club at the high school. He's also developing two apps. Evan and Dawson got off on wrong foot the first two times saw each other at party and school bit things picked up for the better.

Dawson said he wanted to help Evan get experience since he's still a virgin. I loved the development that Dawson went through in this from wanting to help Evan only to discovering hos own sensuality. Evan helped him just as much when Dawson needed it with a player on the team. Evan showed Dawson that the bad break up and accident wasn't his fault. So glad no third act break up happened. When a misunderstanding happened Dawson went after Evan instead of dealing with who caused it right then.

Sex was hot and they fell in love along the way. Another excellent book by DJ.

This is a sweet story. Evan, who is gay and out, is slightly socially awkward, but mostly he’s just an introvert who is so focused on his various projects and helping others, like his grandfather and the tech club teens, that he doesn’t have time to practice basic social skills, let alone ones like flirting. As for Dawson, who is straight, he’s also a sweetheart—just a more damaged one. He’s moved to Granville to be close to family and for a fresh start after losing his chance at an NFL career due to an accident that left him with a spinal injury and a lot of emotional baggage. But Dawson is naturally generous and dedicated.

When Dawson and Evan start running into each other at the high school, after having briefly met at a party where Evan tried unsuccessfully to flirt with Dawson and where Evan’s friends teased him about being a virgin in front of Dawson, things are awkward at first. But they are also drawn to each other. Even though Evan is a bit younger than himself, Dawson admires Evan for how smart he is and for how dedicated he is to working with teens. So he finds himself spending more time around Evan. Believing Dawson to be straight, Evan tries hard to keep his crush on Dawson to himself. But one night, a massage reveals that Dawson is not unaffected by Evan. While Evan convinces himself it was just a reaction to touch, Dawson starts to recognize that he’s attracted to Evan.

I always think it’s interesting when the “straight” guy just goes with it when he starts feeling attraction to a man for the first time. I don’t know how often this happens in real life, but I like it in books. It’s fun because they just enjoy it and often make amusing observations about themselves and their lack of freak outs.

I thought Jamison did a really good job of bringing in the small town elements—the town residents were quirky without being too over the top. I don’t know how believable this is either, but I liked that homophobia wasn’t really a thing in this small town—most everyone was just happy for the new coach and Evan.

I liked how the conflicts and obstacles were resolved. I liked that Dawson, at no time, felt ashamed of his newly discovered sexual fluidity or of his relationship with Evan. I liked how the next book’s characters and situation were woven into the story, too. I think it’s fun that one of the MCs in the next book spent much of this one hitting on Evan. I liked that though there were some steamy scenes, they were limited to times when they were emotionally relevant to the story.

Overall, this is just a cute, fun, happy story. The characters, especially Dawson, deal with some personal issues, but things never get too angsty or dark. So if you’re looking for a light, sweet, nerd/jock, mm romance with some steamy bits, check this one out.

I loved this book so much, I bought it immediately after reading it on Kindle Unlimited. It was the right mix of sweet, spice, and angst for me - the angst was there, but it was certainly outweighed by all the gooey yummy stuff.

The book starts at a party at Evan’s best friend’s place, where he meets a handsome stranger and then is immediately embarrassed in front of said stranger. In a game of Never Have I Ever, Evan reveals he’s still a virgin, something he’d rather not admit or be. His embarrassment grows when he learns the hot stranger is his best friend’s cousin. And he’s just moved to town. And he’s straight. Still, Evan can’t resist getting to know Dawson, who is a genuinely great guy. So great, in fact, Dawson offers to help Evan learn how to flirt and date. That help soon becomes more… hands on. Evan and Dawson agree to a casual friends-with-benefits situation. Dawson doesn't think he can be the man Evan deserves, and Evan's insecurities convince him Dawson can't possibly want him. So these two goofballs get closer while still holding each other at arm's length.

This was a very sweet and low angst book. The story itself was full of adorable, shy, flirty, and laughable moments. Cocky, straight Dawson offers to help bring sweet, shy, virgin Evan out of his shell. This turns into taking the lessons between the sheets... for both of them.

Overall, this was very much a simple small town romance. There wasn't a lot going on in the story besides the relationship itself. And while sweet, I definitely needed more from this story to be truly invested. It got a bit boring for me at times, and that is why this got a 3 star rating. I will say that this book did get me intrigued by the other characters and their stories. This was a fine, middle ground read for me.

    Tropes include:
    MM Love Interests
    Dual POV
    Bi-Awakening
    Friends-to-Lovers
    Friends With Benefits
    Football Coach x Tech Nerd
    Hurt/Comfort
    Low Angst
    No Third Act Breakup

Wow! Just wow!!! I don’t write many reviews, too busy getting my next book but this story is sooooo perfect. The first time these two guys were together left me breathless! Honestly the way DJ Jamison writes this book is phenomenal, I forgot I was reading and just enjoyed it unfurl in my head. Every moment is captured and projected off the page into a reality in your mind. So so well written! Well done love this is amazing and cute and funny and so romantic, can’t wait to see what happens with Darren and Linc, ordered it already, should be a blast!
I think anyone into MM romance with low angst, sporty storyline with a geek and a jock (my fave trope) a HEA and lots of hilarious moments, would love this read. Just buy it, you wont regret it, honestly. It gets a yes from me!

Edit to add - I just re read and can confirm it is as sweet and fun and Amazing as it was the first time around!

Okay so I picked this book up purely because I liked the title and I love this author! I instantly liked Evan and wanted to protect him at all costs and then enters Dawson feeling all woe is me and then he starts looking after Evan and its just so sweet.

There isn't a massive plot line just two guys trying to make the most out of the hands they were dealt while getting to know each other.

I enjoyed how easy this relationship was and how relatively angst free it was.

Can definitely see myself picking this book up again.
