- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2024Format: KindleVerified Purchase“Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: Eye of the Tempest,” by Matt Mememaro, is Book 2 of a pirate fantasy trilogy. I previously read “The Oncoming Storm,” book 1 of the series. Be advised that this is a dark and rather brutal series. Book 2, which is not a complete story arc, begins right after the events in Book 1. King Davis had hoped to conquer the pirates, but his efforts failed. Rather, his home Asenfort, has suffered a devastating attack by the pirates led by Goliath and Reave Reynolds. They destroyed the city, and Reave killed the king’s twin brother, Aaron and almost succeeded in killing the king as well.
Although King Davis does not have complete confidence in resurrected pirate hunter Forn Rask, he is left with few options after the attack, and agrees to send Rask after Goliath and Reave.
Reave has the assistance of fallen pirate king Goliath, whom he had brought back to life, but must also combat Captain Greybeard, who has taken over the island Port Vera. Goliath had previously killed Rask and taken his ship, so Rask is out to get revenge and his ship back. Will the King’s Imperia forces be able to defeat Reave and avenge his attack on Asenfort? The cover is a great choice for the book: a pair of skeletons in combat, one in a pirate hat, the other wearing a crown. This series will appeal to readers who favor action adventure mixed with dark fantasy, fighting, and intrigue.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thoroughly enjoyed reading Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: Eye of the Tempest. It is the second in a series, but I found the storyline so engaging that I had to go back and buy the first book in the series. I have also read another book from a different series from this author and am waiting for the next installment of that series.
The pirate storyline is interesting. There were turns and twists that kept me engrossed. It’s not overly gory, but it's what you would expect from a pirate-type storyline. I really enjoy the author’s character development. It seems natural, not overly wordy, and it is easy to become invested in the characters you choose to root for (or against!) I would say that it falls into the dark fantasy genre, with lots of fighting, blood, action, and pirate shenanigans. I have not read the whole series yet, but if the author continued as he started, I don't think you will be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseVoyages of The Kaliban’s Cradle: Eye of the Tempest is the perfect follow-up to the first book. I like how it picks up right where book one leaves off. The characters continue to shine, and I’m especially partial to Reave. The adventure feels like a movie, with its twists and turns, great dialogue and fun interactions. The scenery, flagships, and supernatural elements are so much fun! I’m excited to read book three, but will be sad to see the end of the tale.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2024Format: PaperbackI would describe Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle: Eye of the Tempest as a fascinating novel That doesn’t shy away from the brutality of dark pirate fantasy. The world-building is spectacular, the stakes are high, and the road to hell is paved with complex and morally profound characters. As a newcomer to this fiction genre, I wasn’t entirely sure what I would be in for, but I am happy to say that it was a fun ride. Felt like going back and experiencing the action and adventure of the old pirate films, and not just the Caribbean variety, though that was a vibe.
If I were to comp this for you, I’d say it was Black Sails and Pirates of the Caribbean colliding on the page before you. All the intrigue, darkness, and moral ambiguity of Black Sails with the fantastical elements of Pirates of the Caribbean to keep things from staying too close to the mundane.
The characters worked well, too. There was a lot of nuance amongst them, and I was a little unsure who I should be rooting for—Games of Thrones in that way. I thought it worked well and would recommend that everyone check it out.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2024Format: KindleI started reading the trilogy with this book. It's a fun and adventurous read, especially for those who enjoy this type of story and theme. It got me interested enough in the series that I would like to go back and read the first book then move on to the third book in the series.
Even though I started with this book in the series, I was able to just jump in and read it without feeling too lost.
I look forward to reading the others and curious to see if the author plans on writing more books set in the same world as this one. The mythology around pirates is always a fun atmosphere to visit. I can tell from reading this book that it is the kind of world the author enjoys writing about. There's always something haunting and mesmerizing about entering a world like this. This was a good recommended read and I'll be starting book one next.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseVoyages of the Kaliban’s Cradle: Eye of the Tempest is a rollicking pirate adventure from start to finish! This unique blend traditional pirate tales and paranormal conspiracies is a fresh take on the theme.
Captain Reave Reynolds leads the crew of his ship through very perilous waters in an attempt to get his revenge. The world the Matt Mememaro has brought to life is rich with distinct and varied characters, grim and dangerous settings, paranormal monsters, and all kinds of other creations.
This pirate action adventure book is a proper page turner that compels the reader through right to the gritty final page. I had a great time reading this book, and was swept away to a seafaring world of danger and adventure, thick with monsters, deception and deceit at every turn.
If you’re looking for a high concept, paranormal pirate adventure that takes no prisoners, is well written and is utterly fascinating, then look no further.
Well done Matt Mememaro on a great story and book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for fans of the pirate adventure genre
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEye of the Tempest is the explosive sequel to the Voyages of the Kaliban's Cradle fantasy trilogy by Matt Mememaro. I didn’t read the first book, but this one works very well as a standalone. Great writing and cinematic world building from the author to create a seamless sequel to the action of book 1. There is much as stake as Reave Reynolds and Goliath, the pirates have escaped Port Nolls on the powerful ship, the Dreadnought. Lots of action and adventure ensues as they fight for control when Forn Rask, the pirate hunter is on their heels to reclaim his long-lost ship. If you enjoy sword fighting battles and pirate adventure on the high seas this book is for you! It is not my favorite genre, but I enjoyed the exciting storytelling and wanted to see what would happen next. Highly recommended for fans of the pirate adventure genre.
