First To Die: Morecambe Bay Trilogy 3 (Book 1) (The Morecambe Bay Trilogies 7) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 83 ratings

The seventh book in the Morecambe Bay series ...

A mistake from the past. An unspeakable evil. A death which will open old wounds ...

When a mutilated body is found in an abandoned house on Morecambe’s seafront, the police are quick to disassociate it from a similar murder that shocked the resort in the 90s.

But the residents of Morecambe know what this is, and they remember only too well the events which once shook the seaside town to its core.

Four children committed a shocking murder back in 1996 - and now history is repeating itself.

When Charlotte Grayson makes a chance connection between the death of her best friend’s father and the events that divided the town, she stumbles across a secret that must be revealed.

Only there’s a killer lurking in the shadows who will protect this lie at any cost ...

Note: This book has a cliffhanger ending and contains mild violence, bad language and occasional sexual references.

Hi, I'm Paul Teague, the author of the DI Hollie Turner series and the Morecambe Bay trilogies.

There are now five titles in the Hull-based DI Hollie Turner series, starting with a trilogy made up from The Fallen Girls, Her Last Cry and The Fifth Girl.

There are two standalone stories - The Killing Circle and Her Final Secret - which follow on from that first story.

There are nine books in the now-completed Morecambe Bay series, with the first story titled Left For Dead.

I've also written the Don't Tell Meg trilogy of psychological thrillers as well as several other standalone stories such as Now You See Her, Dead of Night, One Last Chance, No More Secrets and So Many Lies.

I'm a former broadcaster and journalist with the BBC, but I have also worked as a primary school teacher, a disc jockey, a shopkeeper, a waiter and a sales rep.

I've read thrillers all my life, starting with Enid Blyton's Famous Five series as a child, then graduating to James Hadley Chase, Harlan Coben, Linwood Barclay and Mark Edwards.

If you love those authors then you’ll like my thrillers too.

I also write sci-fi and dystopian novels as Paul Teague and these stories are set in dark and sinister future-worlds.

I have written The Secret Bunker Trilogy, The Grid Trilogy and the standalone story, Phase 6.

This episode has several people and story lines coming together, some good, some not so much. It starts with newspaper journalist Charlotte Grayson being assigned to shadow DCI Kate Summers to report on the daily life of a police officer. Early on, an unknown person is found burned to death in a dilapidated house on the beach. On the wall, the words First To Die were freshly painted, which suggested more victims to come.

An independent film crew has just checked in at Charlotte’s guesthouse – in town to film a documentary on the 25th anniversary of a local teacher, David Brewer, having been burned to death, allegedly by four students. The students made a pact to remain silent about the crime, choosing to be judged as a group. The current crime was a mirror image of the 25-year-old case, the victim had been struck in the head with a hammer, doused with petrol and burned alive. The film crew hoped to solve the old cold case for the police.

A late check-in at the guesthouse was internet sleuth Milo de Vries, with a huge following, who also decided he could do a better job than the police in solving the old case.

Kate had just found out that her father, also a policeman, had some loose connections to the old case, at about the same time he was murdered. His murder had never been solved, and Kate hoped that the pending investigation might shed some light on her father’s death. She asked Charlotte to start checking old file information to see who was working the case. Her first contact with the local history expert turned up only vacant archive files – no news articles to draw from.

Talking with Felicity Brewer, David’s wife, they learned that when the three youngest children had been released from juvenile detention, they were hidden away with new identification for their protection. The fourth, who had just turned 18 at the time of the crime, was tried as an adult, and had been released just two weeks ago. Felicity had been a teacher, but one who was very stiff, prickly, abrupt, and hated the kids involved, as well as the police who had interrogated her at the time. She obviously knew Kate’s father, didn’t think too highly of him, and stated that Kate was just like him.

This is a very busy story, with multiple other story lines involving Charlotte continually having bad luck, with accidents and injuries. But she and Kate were also in the murderer’s cross-hairs, so they were in constant danger from new random arson attempts. Mr. Teague did a great job keeping up the non-stop action, building the suspense, which kept me engrossed, wondering what could go wrong next. As promised, this is a series which is drawing closer to completion, so I was not surprised at the cliff-hanger ending. I intend to stick with it to the end. I was given a BETA copy to read and critique, which I did, but this did not sway me – this review is my honest opinion. I have several of Mr. Teague’s books from other series in my TBR queue that I am eager to read as well.

    Paul Teague – Morecambe Bay Bk 1 – First To Die – Reviewed 11/3/21 - Read 10/27-29/21

We are back with Charlotte Grayson, and she is working with the Morecambe Bay PD, alongside her best friend, DCI Kate Summers, when a body is found in an abandoned building on the seafront. She had obtained permission to work with the PD to gain more knowledge as to how things are done. When this new murder case came up DCI Summers was assigned the case.

While they are investigating the murder, the two of them fall into the path of danger on all fronts. The case has taken a turn that both women feel will lead them to more information about the death of Kate’s father. Charlotte knows this is her chance to finally help her friend and pay her back for saving her life not long before.

Join Charlotte and Kate as they battle the forces of evil to find the killer today, and 25 years ago…

What did I like? Having read all the previous books in this trilogy I was excited to get into this one. Well, excited is the keyword here.. from the first to the last is spellbinding. Paul has thrown in everything including the kitchen sink! We have two books left and if this is any indication of what is to come, then it is going to be one heck of an ending to this series.

What will you like? Unbelievable excitement, intense action, murder, suspense, intrigue, and mystery! The cast of characters is astounding, Charlotte and Kate steal the show though! The storyline is inscrutably the best in the series so far, and I thought the last book was awesome. Paul brings everything to life for the reader with excellent descriptions and a ton of explicit details. Don’t miss adding this one to your suspense library today, Paul Teague’s next book in the Morecambe Bay Trilogy 3, book one, “First To Die” is available NOW!!!

Back with Charlotte and Kate, working together to solve a death of a homeless guy, thinking it relates to a twenty-five year old murder. It was an okay story but I thought it was a little slow. The characters were well developed, the dialogue was confusing at times, and fairly fast paced. Not too keen on being left hanging so not quite ready to tackle the next book.
