This is marketed as a sexuality style guide, but it has had positive effects on all genres that I write. The reason: connectivity. Stories are more appealing when the reader bonds with one or more elements, and this book teaches you to do that. My reader feedback and story sales have improved because of this book and the way it instructed me. Highly recommended!

As romance author of both sweet and steamy, this resource is invaluable. The worksheets alone are worth the purchase! Yes, even if you write sweet/clean romance because most romance authors know it's the tone of the story that draws in readers. How they connect to the characters. The worksheets are excellent tools that can only help an author with a more rounded and in-depth insight to the authors characters. Thank you, Dr. J. LOVE this book.

    3. I really liked a helpful chapter about phrases and description.
    Cons:
    1. It wasn't what I expected
    2. I don't think it will help that much with writing intimate scenes
    3. It was somewhat clinical.

I enjoyed reading the beautiful erotic story Forever Tattooed in this book. Dr. J. annotates it—incorporating the ideas expressed in this sexuality guide. I also liked the “word bank” section which will be helpful as I write. Dr. J.’s word bank includes words to suggest the types of touch; words for how a character feels; words for how something feels when touched; and words for how a character moves in reaction. The words for each section are in alphabetical order. Thank you Dr. J. for compiling them in one reference guide.

If you’re looking for a formulaic approach to writing sex scenes, that is quick and easy, “Insert part A into part B” using a few over-used words—this may not be the book for you. However, if you’re seeking a guide that encourages deeper reflection on your sex scenes, the motivations of your characters, and the nuances of their relationships, this book is invaluable. It offers a wealth of information and, considering it’s available on Kindle Unlimited, it’s a fantastic resource. If you’re serious about your writing, I highly recommend it. While there is some academic writing, I found this refreshing and appreciated the author’s expertise, supported by well-researched insights. Sometimes, stepping back to gain a new perspective is just what’s needed to elevate one’s work.

As a writer, I’ve always found this topic quite daunting. This book covers everything from scenes to developing a sexual history for characters. Very helpful.

I attended a webinar where Dr. J was a presenter, and paused halfway through to come buy her book.

This book is full of excellent information on human sexuality, story telling, and how to apply that to our stories and characters. There are loads of useful worksheets for interviewing characters and planning scenes, which make an excellent supplement to other character building materials. It also teaches writers how to recognize and separate their own biases from their characters.

Regardless of whether you’re writing very steamy fiction or something closed door, this book has a lot of value. My husband doesn’t write about romantic relationships at all and there were points where I stopped to show him things in this book that I thought would help him with aspects of his writing, and now he’s reading through it too.

There is some good information in this book if you can wade through it, but the writing is dense and academic. I am the sort of writer who usually prefers three short words over ten long ones that mean the same thing. If you are comfortable with the latter, here you are.

I purchased this book in the hope of making my certain scenes more realistic between real characters, and it does give some good advice on getting to know your character's past relationships first. But overall, it is not what I was looking for, and why I only gave it 3*s.
This guide is more like a text book.
Although, others may appreciate the style of the author and her advice given.
