Dear Readers,

Let me take you back to a time when the lives of ordinary women were changed as never before.

I used to listen with avid interest as my mother and others told me of their wartime experiences, the fear, the shortages, the blackout and the sudden changes in their lives. Factory girls, typists, debutantes and housewives left the home front and took up nursing, ambulance driving, fire watching and much more. En masse they left the home front behind and took up duties on the war front. These are the women whose stories I tell – whether they are keeping the home fires burning or serving on the war front.

Despite everything, they still found time to have fun, to love whether for the moment or such love that lasts a lifetime.

I hope you too will come with me and follow these very ordinary girls of whom much was asked and a lot given.

I am at an age when I often evaluate my life and what I've done. I grew up on a tough council estate in Bristol where members of my family worked in the tobacco industry. Those years were the basis for my Coronation Close series.

I was a rocker in the sixties and looked good in leather. My late husband rode a Triumph Bonneville motorcycle. When I wasn't wearing motorcycle leathers I wore a mini skirt and am sure my hair was longer than my skirt.

Having been taught to type at thirteen years of age I ended up working in an office. I hated it but needs must. I had a baby daughter to look after plus we bought a house so it was a case of two wages being better than one.

Horses and dogs figured greatly in my life. I used to breed and show Irish Red Setters and regularly qualified for Crufts.

Horses were really my daughter's bag. Although I loved them I was a lousy rider, but I could draw them. Used to be quite good at drawing but haven't done much for a long time.

Yes, I am a writer, but initially and right up until now, I am a storyteller. I used to tell my siblings stories when we should have been sleeping. That's what I still am.

It began in the early nineties. I was broke and jobs were few and far between. So I took the advice of an American friend and called myself a writer.

Over the next thirty years I wrote my socks off with some success. I won the BBC New Writers' Award with a script and for three years had my own newspaper column.

I had my first book published in 1994. I think it's now close on seventy.

No longer dog breeding or riding horses, in 2011 husband and I sold up and sailed away. For five years we lived on a sailing yacht, down through the Atlantic and into the Mediterranean. Very off grid! Very much the gypsy life. There was nothing like sailing beneath a sky full of stars or anchored in a tranquil bay, tapping away on my laptop - another book in the offing. Thank goodness for e-mail!

I now live in Bath, not far from where Jane Austen used to live. I am alone but never alone. I have the characters I bring to life in my mind and thence into my books.

An interesting read. I found myself waiting for the next in the series. Very interesting and kept me entertained. Amen.

I enjoyed this series. I would have liked to see an epilogue to show how the girls all settled into their new lives. I wanted to see Bridget’s arrival. Lyndon’s reaction. His family’s reaction to her. I felt kind of cheated we didn’t get to see it. What happens with the other girls? After all these books I found the ending to be abrupt and unfulfilling. I would still recommend reading the series.

Excellent story. So sad to have this series come to an end. I will miss reading about the 3 M's.

This is the 6th and final book in this series.

Throughout the books and years that have passed we have watched the 3 M’s - Maise Miles, Phyllis Mason (now Fairbrother) and Bridget Milligan (now O’Neill) grow from young girls working in the local tobacco factory into these incredible women who have fallen in love, survived the war and now about to start on some new adventures so to speak. This series makes you think a lot of what happened during World War 2 in the UK, it touches so many topics like hunger, lack of clothing, love, death and more. So much more could be mentioned but then that would give a lot of it away. It is a series that you cannot put down and it is sad to see end. It’s almost like you wish there would be that one more story years down the line when there is a reunion of these 3 very special ladies.

Bridget thought she had it all with this incredible marriage to Lyndon and son but now she is having some doubts and questions in her life. While she loves her husband is she truly willing to move away from all her friends and family in the UK to a new life with him in the US? Can her dad and brothers survive without her? What about her friends? What about the children being sent to Australia …..excuse after excuse is being made so she doesn’t have to leave. But they can only last so long. Especially since Lyndon while he was alright with the first delay, is now running out of patience. He just wants her and their son with him in the US. Now the decision has to be made….love or family.

Phyllis lost her first love but luckily found it again when she met Australian Mick one day. When their first wedding was delayed, she married him as quickly as possible when they had the chance. Now as the war was ending it was discovered that Mick should not have gone back in serving so quickly. His head injury had caused more damage than first thought and now all the plans they had made to go back to Australia were on hold. The fact he can’t work, he can’t travel, he can’t create his dream is causing Mick to have a lot of issues…it isn’t until a little girl and a friendly neighbor pull him out of his fog that he realizes he needs to live every day to its fullest instead of lollygagging around. This could mean staying in the one story house that Phyllis found for them through someone she knows that is close to the hospital and friends, working back at the tobacco factory…or take the chance and go back Down Under where there might a surprise or two.

Maise had struggles during her life, hard struggles that not everyone would have survived. But through time, friendship, her job, and love she has worked through it all. When Sid is taken prisoner in Singapore, she patiently waits for him to return, her love for him never ending, even when offered another option. The only thing truly getting her through all that isn’t just her friends but a friend’s child named Paula. Who came into this world giving them hope. Then a tragedy strikes and now the question is what will happen to the toddler? What will happen to the relationship between Maise and Sid after he returns home after 4 long years?

A Fond Farewell for the Tobacco Girls

I have not read any books of this series until this one. I was surprised how quickly I fell in love with the Three M's.

I enjoyed this book and stayed up until 2 am last night to finish it. I'm not sorry I lacked sleep and will feel yucky today.

I was hoping everything went well for Maisie, Phyllis and Bridget. These were hard times. I can't imagine what they had to go through. The strength of these women were amazing.

I think I need to look up the previous books and discover their back stories. Great book.
