Father of the Future Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 40 ratings

Cassique is a time travelling Fixer in AD 2853. It's his job to nip back into the past and fix problems which threaten to wipe out the world of the twenty-ninth century. But the longer Cassique spends in those past times, the more he comes to wonder if the docile, VR-obsessed people of his present would actually benefit from a reset. It's a dangerous thought, because that would mean taking a stand against Father, the world-running super-computer, and Father takes a very dim view of any form of rebellion.

When Cassique teams up with a couple of relatively famous figures from the past, they start trying to formulate a plan to make time travel work in their favour, and return the reins of control to humanity. But they have to be exceedingly careful, because Father might be listening...

A darkly comic cross between
1984 and Time Bandits, this science fiction work shines a light on the dangers of putting too much power in the hands of a computer, and is more timely than ever when framed against the recent debate concerning the rise of AI.

"A timely, riveting, thought-provoking page-turner."
Kirkus.

"Barbed with sarcastic and self-aware narration, this wildly creative read weaves issues of religion, science, and politics into a masterful allegory of contemporary society, seen through the spectacularly inventive lens of a far-flung future. 4.5 stars out of 5."
Self-Publishing Review.

"Packed with both references to existing history and imagined events and figures in the centuries to come, this is a fascinating and imaginative science fiction tale that blends fact and fiction to weave an entertaining read."
The US Review of Books.

"Darren Dash builds upon an intriguing premise to deliver an engaging sci-fi story with a healthy dose of satire, philosophical discourse, and dark humor. 5 stars out of 5."
Readers' Favorite.

"A fun-filled and provocative time travel adventure."
The BookLife Prize.

"With enthralling jumps into the past, a dystopian setting, a tortured hero, and a race against time,
Father of the Future practically begs to be adapted to the big screen. This story will stick with you for a very long time..." The Literary Connoisseur.

"This book is a true masterpiece set to take the literary world by storm."
Midwest Book Review.

Darren Dash is better known as Darren Shan, under which name he has sold over 25 million books worldwide, mainly in the YA market. While Darren is still in love with the world of YA and as active on that front as ever, he is now also exploring the darker world of the night with his adult works, as Darren Dash.

Darren's real name is Darren O’Shaughnessy. He was born on July 2, 1972, in London, but is Irish (despite the strong Cockney accent that he has never lost) and has spent most of his life in Limerick in Ireland, where he now lives with his wife and son.

Darren went to school in Limerick, then studied Sociology and English at Roehampton University in London. He worked for a cable television company in Limerick for a couple of years, before setting up as a full-time writer at the age of 23. Darren was 17 when he finished his first novel. (It has yet to be published, but hopefully he'll get around to rewriting and editing it into shape for a future Darren Dash release.) For the next several years, sandwiched between university and work, he wrote a book a year, experimenting with different ideas, genres, lengths and styles. When he started writing full-time, his output shot up to 5 to 6 books per year, and although that has dipped in recent years, he has still been an incredibly prolific author, releasing 49 books between February 1999 and December 2016.

All of his early books were adult-oriented, and his initial breakthrough was with an adult book, in February 1999, called "Ayuamarca" (later republished as "Procession of the Dead" under the Darren Shan banner), the first of a trilogy of books known as "The City". That was followed by "Hell's Horizon" in February 2000. Then, several years later, when the first two were re-edited and re-released, he published the third book, "City of the Snakes". All of these came out under the Darren Shan name, as did a one-off thriller with supernatural elements called "Lady Of The Shades." But Darren never felt comfortable releasing his adult work under the same name as his YA work, and decided to create a new pseudonym for his more mature novels in 2014 -- which led to the birth of Darren Dash.

A big film buff, with a collection of nearly five thousand movies on DVD, Darren also reads lots of books and comics, and likes to study and collect original artwork, especially comic art, modern art, and sculptures. Other interests include long walks, watching football (he’s a Tottenham Hotspur and Ireland fan), listening to pop and rock music, theatre, worldwide travel, sampling the delights of both gourmet cuisine and finger-licking junk food, and dreaming up new ways to disturb and entertain his readers!

Definitely an interesting concept, incredibly relevant. A good read, didn’t see a lot of it coming. I can’t think of what else to say, just give it a try.

    “Father knows best.”

Eight hundred and thirty years into the future is where our story begins; a point in time where humanity has reached peak perfection. War is a non-entity, poverty is non-existent. There is no hunger, no disease, no crime, no pain, and a human’s basic needs are always met with the help of Father, a supercomputer solely responsible for the upkeep of the human race.

Cassique, a Fixer and resident of this optimal Earth, is our protagonist. It is his duty as a Fixer to travel back in time and help correct mistakes made in the past before the inevitable collapse of the Time Hole, an event predicted by Father to cause mass destruction. With his frequent journeys to set points in history, Cassique can’t help but start to notice stark differences between his own world, and that of the past. A contact-free life begins to feel sterile, programming masquerades as progress, and all that appears ideal may instead be taking from humans the one thing that is crucial to our existence...our humanity.

As doubt slowly creeps its way into Cassique’s mind, it brings along with it further questioning and fear of the consequences for those who dare to challenge Father.

Intrigue and suspense sandwich this delicious post-apocalyptic, science fiction slow burner in classic Darren Dash fashion. Father of the Future promises to sink its hook into readers on the very first page, and will refuse to let go until it’s finished shocking, thrilling, and chilling. Darren Dash has a particular talent for jotting down stories that will often occupy a reader’s mind when their eyes are no longer glued to the page, and Father of the Future is no exception. In fact, I myself cannot name a novel of his that has occupied more of my headspace than this.

In a future where everything from reproduction to intimacy, entertainment to cleanliness is controlled, will we still be able to recognize the concept of free will? Will we still recognize ourselves as human? At what point will we realize that apathy can be a side-effect of ease and convenience?

With enthralling jumps into the past, a dystopian setting, a tortured hero, and a race against time, Father of the Future practically begs to be adapted to the big screen. And though Darren Dash’s latest nail-biter will hardly cost you a weekend to absorb, I can personally guarantee that this story will stick with you for a very long time...

...perhaps even through the collapse of the Time Hole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just wow!!!

The premise of Father of the Future is simple. What if in the future, AI has taken over the world. Theres no crime, no wars, a disease called RUSH has stopped any births. Instead people are created artificially. VR and sex spas are the only entertainment. Father wants to stop any past events or any alternate realities that could threaten the future. So he sends fixers into the past to well fix things.

Cassique is a fantastically written protagonist and Dash weaves his inner turmoil, torn between the past and present. It jumps off the page beautifully. I really love the scale and ideas and the way Dash writes is simple but very complex at the same time. My favourite read of 2024 so far, especially since I have been struggling with reading recently. As a long time reader of his YA and adult books. It felt like coming home. It is scary but also very believable that with the rise of AI this something similar could happen to us at some point.

My only complaint is at times I wish it would've parred back on the sexual elements which didn't really add much(although the ideas were interesting) and the book should've been longer!!! 10/10

Check out his other books also as they are just as good, but so different. Never stop writing Darren.❤

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing yet cautionary read

    CAWPILE = 9.07

This was such an intriguing yet cautionary look at a world that's ruled by an all-seeing AI. Some things appear amazing at first, no crime, no laws, no police, no discrimination and lots of other things that we wish weren't either present or necessary in reality. As Cassique begins to question his place in the world, we as readers smash through the web of security to witness the true horror of the darkness lurking at the heart of the mainframe right beside him and some unlikely allies.

This book truly is the kick we all need to examine the state that our society is in and the motives of those in charge before there's some truly irreparable damage done.

I absolutely devoured this book in five hours. Great writing by Darren as always. I would have rated it 4/5 literally only for it being so short- but enjoyed the read too much to give it anything other than a 5
