About the author

Lois Wickstrom lives in a world where imaginary playmates are real. She doesn’t remember being born, so she finds unbirthdays are more exciting than the official once-a-year date on the calendar. She’s taken so many science classes that she believes science is the solution to almost every problem, including the dilemmas in fairy tales.
She writes by herself. She writes with co-authors. She asks illustrators what they would like to draw. If she ever writes her autobiography, the title will be My Life as a Group Project.
Her mother used to get angry with her for daydreaming. Her little sister picked on her. So she lived in books and wrote her own stories in which the bad-guys made sense, and the good-guys had a chance. As she has grown older, her imagination has grown weirder. Even she doesn’t know what she will write next.

Good children's story, engaging and relatable, great characters, reminds me of having imagination as a kid. I give the book 4 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2025Another excellent book from Lois Wickstrom. My girls love anything involving magic and dragons so I knew this would be a perfect chapter book for them. It has adventure, magic, mythological/magical creatures, and a little girl who is growing into her own person.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has children that are starting to get into chapter books. It has enough happening that it will keep their attention while still being easy for them to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2025My kids and I love Lois Wickstrom books but are getting more advanced in their reading and gravitating more toward chapter books, something we really enjoy reading together before bed. I was really happy to stumble across In The Dragon’s Fiery Lair.
I enjoyed reading this with my kids as it was not an intimidating length and the chapters were short and easy to squeeze “just one more” in before bedtime.
The writing was just challenging enough with great imagery. I was really pulled in when the author described petting a dragon and the characteristics that come along with it.
I definitely recommend this book if you like fantasy and great world building. (My kids are 8 and 10)
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2025When Amy turns 12, she wants to know if she will be Magyck, like or father, or normal, like her mother. To figure this out, Amy and her mother go into the cave that 12 years before, her father had disappeared from, believed to have died after cheating on his Magyck test. When Amy and her mother find a way into the cave that has been sealed since her fathers failed test, they meet a genie friend of her father's, as well as an invisible dragon and the ghost of a Magyck teacher who is trying to protect and teach the dragon. What none of them can see coming is the truth of what happened to Amy's father.
This book is.a good read for young readers with a mystery and a happy ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2025All in all an interesting book. I feel like there’s holes in the back story that make it hard to fully understand the characters relationships. Maybe it’s just better suited for a younger audience. As a 32 year old female it was hard to follow and I had a hard time keeping interested.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2025I really enjoyed this story, this is not what I usually see from this author. Amy knows deep down she has magyck and that comes to fruition on her twelfth birthday. Her grandma and her mother have told her stories about her dad Basil, but in her heart she thinks him to still be alive somewhere. I was scared for her going into the cave on her birthday to discover her magyck, and was very happy her mom decided to go with her. The dragon and genie both seemed like tricksters to me, but it was funny that they, Amy and her mom, kept referring to the dragon as floating bird poop. The adventure in the cave and trying to solve problems was fun to follow along with, the only downside is the ending. I feel it was left very open ended, I really wanted to know what happens to Amy and her family as well as the ghost.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2025Amy is taught that at the age of 12, she will learn if she has magic powers or if she is like everyone else. She and her mother enter a cave that was believed to be where her father Basil passed away. When they enter this cave, they soon learn that they are stuck inside. They come across a dragon, a genie, and a ghost. Will they ever be able to leave the cave or will they be stuck in there forever? This is a FUN read for young kids that are learning how much fun reading can be!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2025This was a cute little story about a young girl trying to find her magyck and on the journey finding so much more. The story had twists in it that I was not expecting, but it was good in the end. It was a good little story and I think many young people would enjoy this book if they are into paranormal. I recommend this author and will look forward to reading more by the author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Children's chapterbook.
3 – 3.5 Stars
In the Dragon’s Fiery Lair by Lois Wickstrom & Jean Lorrah is a fun chapter storybook aimed at tweens/middle-school aged children. It is a fantasy with action, adventure, magic, spells, drama, mystery, suspense, family, danger, paranormal elements, a genie, a dragon, a ghost, and a journey of discovery.
This is something a little different from Ms. Wickstrom, being a children’s chapter book, though it’s not her first, but I am more familiar with her illustrated storybooks aimed at younger children. Now my eldest grandson is old enough to appreciate chapter books and loves adventure, so I happily grabbed a copy for us to explore together.
Amy yearns to discover if she will carry on the legacy of magyck that runs in her family. But that means entering the mysterious ‘Cave’ where her father lost his life. We follow along as she sets off on her adventure, which not only brings danger, but turns into a bit of a journey of discovery too.
Happy Reading…
Thank you, Lois Wickstrom & Jean Lorrah!
