A mix of romance, drama, action, passion and humor ❤
This book was a mix of romance, drama, action, passion and humor - which blended perfectly into the theme of the WAR - a story about friendship, loyalty and lots of love. ❤ 📚 “𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙗𝙤𝙙𝙮 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪, 𝙇𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙒𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙧, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙄 𝙙𝙤. 𝙄 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪.” 📚 15-year-old Jamie Murphy has built walls around her heart after her father died in a car accident and she had to move into a foster home. 💔 One day, while she was sitting outside, a boy from the other side of the wall sat down with her. She doesn't know what he looks like or what's his name besides the nicknames they gave each other (he calls her a 'Little Warrior', and she calls him 'Bear') but very quickly he becomes her only solace... In her 16th birthday, she finally gets the courage to go to the other side of the wall and meet him face to face - but she discovers he just... left. To join the army. 😱💥 📚 "𝘼𝙡𝙡 𝙄 𝙙𝙤 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙄 𝙥𝙪𝙨𝙝 𝙝𝙞𝙢 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮, 𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨𝙣’𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙩 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙖 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚." 📚 At 18, Jamie is independent and strong but can't figure out who she is - so she decides to enlist. The day before, she meets Jake Tanner, a soldier in the Australian SAS unit and the night they spent together was filled with sweetness and passion! 🔥❤ Jamie finds her destiny as a medic in the fire lines of Afghanistan - but Bear's memory and the way he abandoned her still hurts... But sometimes the road to happiness is unexpected, because there, in the line of fire, she meets Jake and his friends again. 💛 Everyone around Jamie is advancing, leaving the service and building a life for themselves - and she has nothing but the army. Will you find out what the world has to offer, apart from war? 💥 And will she ever find out why Bear left her...? 😭 📚 "𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙗𝙪𝙧𝙣 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙘𝙠. 𝙏𝙤𝙤 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩. 𝙏𝙤𝙤 𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙩. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙛𝙖𝙧, 𝙛𝙖𝙧 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙙." 📚 OK, so... WOW! 💥 The author definitely did some serious research, because this story was surprising but realistic. I enjoyed the journey - it was painful, sexy, touching... and although I really wanted to know how the story ended, I didn't really want it to end! 🙏 However, this book was long (460 pages) So, there were parts that felt to long and despite the amazing writing, there were some unclear jumps in the plot - for example, Jamie knocks on her commander's door - and right after that, it's the end of their conversation... Plus, There were some twist I guessed too quickly. 😬 Yet... I finished reading this book with tears in my eyes, a smile on my face and a huge feeling of satisfaction... for me, THIS IS EVERYTHING! 😭💛💥 So just... READ IT!!!

I don’t know if this has ever happened to you after reading an epic love story, but it was a first for me. When I turned the last page of Fighting Absolution, I rushed to my PC, opened a doc and then stared at the screen gormessly. No words came, just tears. I needed to collect my thoughts before even attempting to put pen to paper, but I simply couldn’t. It took me exactly a day to read but ages to write this review. Now, this isn’t normal, Fighting Absolution isn’t your normal military romance, either. McCarthy took me on a roller-coaster ride which squeezed my heart, touched my soul and gave me a profound feeling of hope.

The character development is nothing less than spectacular. In their own way, they all have imperfections, making them so much more relatable. The storyline is dramatic without being overdone, the pace is fast, keeping me on the edge from the beginning to the end. It’s a real-life warzone. It’s battling with emotions so deep, those affected can’t see what’s in front of their very own eyes. The details of the surroundings at home and away, the camaraderie shared hardships to heartfelt friendship, trust and love are carefully thought-out. Nothing is left out, nothing is exaggerated.

“Isn’t that why any of us join the damn army in the first place? We’re hoping it’s going to perform some kind of miracle and piece us back together.”

Young Jamie Murphy is in need of a friend and she finds one on the other side of a fence, but they never cross the panels. Not one to tell all, she gradually opens up to Bear. But who is he? Why does he hold back on her? You’ll see although one thing’s for sure, she’s his Little Warrior.

“There’s the little warrior I know. I would laugh if we both weren’t hurting so much.”

What he sees in her is strength; a strength he encourages and oh boy, she’s going to need every ounce of it. I really and truly liked Jamie. So unpretentious, her beauty doesn’t even register with her. When she’s on form, you’ll love her dry wit and through it all, she still managed to make me smile.

‘Careful. You cracked a joke. Isn’t that your quota for the year?’

The worse happens, he’s gone, she can’t find him. Wow, to say she was peeved would be putting it mildly. Hmm…so it’s his bad luck, life goes on and she has a plan. A plan which not only turns out better than she could ever have imagined, but in its way, also reflects on future happenings which for this reader, caused utter despair.

‘Maybe that’s what life is all about. Snatching moments like this. Ones that get you through when you have nothing else.’

As fate would have it, the same war-torn road they’d chosen to go down brings Bear and Jamie together. Their friendship rekindles, he becomes her rock and to be perfectly honest, I still don’t know if I cried more for him or Jamie whilst learning how they coped with loss. But there are happy times which melted my heart. Their leg-pulling and comebacks; a welcome reprieve, had me grinning from ear to ear. How Jamie and Bear’s story evolves brought out more crushing feels if that were ever possible. And in all fairness and as much as I would like to tell you the outcome of their journey, I can’t. What I can say is this book will captivate you and be warned, having a man-sized hanky at hand is a must.

“There’s no such thing as stupid when it comes to grief. We all deal with it in our own way.”

I would love to have two besties with such wisdom in my life as does Jamie. Wood with his clumsiness, affection and encouragement. Erin who with no holds barred, makes her stubborn friend see things for what they are. And Bear’s mate Ryan, still hurting inside, is there when most needed. Meeting Fin through Jamie’s eyes left a lump in my throat but hey, this tight-knit group became my people.

“You can’t lose the memories inside your heart.”

The dual narrative written in the present is particularly important as it gave me the two sides to the story and although the protagonists’ inner thoughts were at times contrasting, both of them express how they feel perfectly. Fighting Absolution is without a doubt, one of the best love stories I have read this year. Bravo, McCarthy!

I am a voracious reader; I normally plow through books at a breakneck speed of one every other day. But this one, this one has stopped me cold, making me need time to think and recover from the overwhelming journey contained within it. “Fighting Absolution” by Kate McCarthy has captured my very soul and broken me open. It has absolutely wrecked me and it will wreck you too.

The story of Jamie and Kyle, “Little Warrior” and “Bear”, childhood friends unknowingly bonded in the pain and grief of loss. Both running from emotional ghosts, and the shared trauma of their initial parting as kids. They separately join the Australian Army in hopes of escaping their pasts and finding their individual places in the world. Their story is one of unspeakable pain, guilt, self-loathing, the true horrors of dealing with day-to-day living as soldiers thrust into war, and the loneliness and longing that comes with closing yourself off to the world in order to cope. It is also the story of all those who surround them, the “chosen family” who love them fiercely, and endure the equal pain of watching them both struggle, all the while, knowing they are helpless to break the emotional armor they've both built.

It is a breathtaking story about emotional brokenness, about the masks people wear to hide the pain deep within, the lies we tell ourselves to run from our own truths, and the struggle to put yourself back together even when all of your instincts scream at you to retreat behind the mask and remain deep inside the safety of the darkness.  It is also a story about hope, redemption, of pure love, unadulterated loyalty, and a lesson in true family.

It is without a doubt, one of the most commanding books I've read this year.  McCarthy’s expertly written prose so powerful, it planted within me a seed of loss so strong it ripped open something inside of me long forgotten, and turned me into a sniveling mess.  Like the flesh of a walnut plucked from its shell, this book plunged itself deep into my chest, cracked beyond meticulously placed walls, and ripped the remains of long dormant traumas from my body. Not for many years have I felt such grief, such pure, unadulterated emotional pain.

Jamie and Kyle, characters of enormous depth, experiencing senses of emotional brokenness so familiar in pain to my own it gave me chills.  Rarely have I felt so connected to a literary character.  From within the pages of this soul tearing book I see myself staring back, lost, hurting, broken, using humor and steely arrogance to keep myself at arm’s length from all around me.  I relate to Jamie’s learned trait of swallowing pain, bottling it up so deep inside the well of her soul, stealing her spine to the outside world, that she almost doesn’t recognize herself in the mirror.  I too learned to keep the world at bay so my emotional armor never cracked, working, and working, and working, always alone, trying to absolve myself of things that were never really my doing to begin with. And I relate to Kyle and Jamie’s need to flee, always moving forward, and trying to escape or find answers to the pain in places they don't exist.

As a result, both during and since reading this book, I see Little Warrior and Bear in my head.  I feel them both in my heart, and in my soul.  And I can say without a shadow of a doubt, I always will.  They will always be with me.  That is how powerful this book is.  And there are simply not enough stars in the literary world to do this book justice because it deserves them all.

Amazing story! Loved the Australian setting. Incredible characters. I eye rolled s couple of times towards Jamie’s attitude but overall, loved it.

The only flaw for me was the length. It became tedious making is sooo long. Some scenes were repetitive and there was no de de in delaying their romance.

But I enjoyed it and definitely will read more from the author 💜

This was. Wow I really dont know how to put into words what an incredible read this was. Heartwarming, heartbreaking and all that's in between. Was this book really just about 400 pages? I feel like I just lived a lifetime with these characters. Like I probably read a trilogy or something? And that is my favorite kind of read. Kate McCarthy did a phenomenal job with this work. I feel sad that it's over but so happy I lived this and so satisfied with how it all turned out. I want more like this ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

I cannot rave enough about this book. And i dont 'rave' about anything. I've been putting off reading it for 2 weeks because I had a feeling it was going to consume me and i needed to be in the right mood. Well I've had all say to do nothing but nurse a cold so I got stuck in. I dont even know where to start but I lived all the elements. I think I'm guna shy with army focused books bevause they tend to be cliche and that was part of my hesitancy but it pleasantly surprised me and i found myself thinking a little of our girl the series. It gave just enough that it was interesting and we got an idea of it, but not too much we get bored or lost by the technicalities of the army. JAKE though. Ugh we usually know with a story like this, how and where we want it to go in terms of love interests, but honestly? I was rooting for them and i loved their relationship for what it was. But at the same time, it came to an end in an acceptable way, no matter how sad. I'm glad they had what they had separately before we got to Kyle. I loved the banter and comedic moments. My feelings were there every step of the way and i loved the journey.

This book is all encompassing. It takes you on a journey spanning 20 years. Through death, through war, heart ache, survival, guilt, laughter, friendship and an undying love.

One of the most powerfully beautiful and emotionally charged stories I have read in a long time.

Her words are written so beautifully, you can easily become absorbed in the story and picture yourself watching from above.

Her characters are strong, emotional, and evolving.
It’s a powerful journey of love, forgiveness and deserving of happiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a stunningly beautiful book
Reviewed in Australia on April 29, 2020
I've now read this book twice and it was every bit as good, if not better the second time around. While there are sparks between the main characters right from the start, it's definitely a slow burn, so be prepared to buckle in and enjoy the ride. The journey is long, convoluted and at times heartbreaking, but never boring. As well as having a great plot there are a few other things worth highlighting. The book is written in dual POV and the author skillfully swaps between the two main characters, sometimes right in the middle of a scene. In a less skilled authors' hands, this could have been clunky. Here it works wonderfully well. While the timeline is largely linear, there are considerable sections, again often right in the middle of a scene, that are told in flashback. Again, this is beautifully handled. I've seen this used in other books and it can be awkward and off putting, but that's definitely not the case here. The author is Australian and she paints the Australian landscapes beautifully, many of the places described I have been to and they are very much as they are written. But she paints with a deft touch, she doesn't labour over long drawn out descriptions of the sky, the trees, the buildings, the animals. She sketches in words, and it's perfectly done. The Australian vernacular and attitude is captured too, complete with colourful slang and evocative swear words. The dialogue is incredibly naturalistic, its never clunky or stilted. And finally, the book just has that "it" factor. That thing that you can't quite put your finger on, the thing that elevates it from a good read, beyond a great read to an amazing read. Her prose is almost poetic and just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. I absolutely recommend reading this book, especially if you love military romance and Australian books.
