4.3 out of 5 stars 87 ratings

Trying to get free shouldn’t be this hard.

Levi

Parents are supposed to protect us. Love us. But what if they’re the very people trapping you in hell? When I stumble into the gym, I’m only looking for somewhere warm. Somewhere safe. What I found is something far more dangerous than my father’s fists. I found hope. What happens if I lose my safety before I even have the chance to be free? To be me?

August

It’s my job to teach people how to keep themselves safe. Someone shouldn’t be hurt by those who are supposed to love them, simply for being who they are. What happens when the person I want to help more than anything won’t let me in? What happens if I lose him before I even have the chance to show him real, safe love?

Fighting for Freedom is a standalone MM romance novella in the multi-author series Fighting for Love. All the stories take place at the shared gym, Knockout MMA Training Facility. At the Knockout Gym, happily ever afters are hard-won.

Fighting for Freedom is a standalone MM romance novel in the multi-author series Fighting for Love. All the stories take place at the shared gym, Knockout MMA Training Facility. Joelle says she doesn't write angsty, but she does it so well. I really felt for Levi and his home situation and was rooting for him. I was also rooting for him and August. I did feel this book was too short and there was more that could be explored. Things I Loved 🧦Dual POV 🍕Angsty 🧦Epilogue 🍕HEA Joelle, can we please have a Nelly story!

A fantastic addition to this multi-author series and a great read from Joelle Lynne. There is a lot of emotion in this book as we meet August and Levi at the Knockout Gym. The gym and Chuck, the owner, are the same from other books but Levi and August’s story can definitely be a standalone read. Definitely check the triggers before reading this book.

August is running a course at the gym, trying to keep his head above water and attract new clients to make this dream of his into something he can earn a living from. He deals with questions from his family who wish he would find something stable. The gym is where he meets Levi who is literally running away from an abusive home situation and runs straight into the knockout gym and August’s life.

The two characters dealt with some extremely difficult issues over the course of the book from alcoholism, domestic abuse and financial instability. At times it felt like a whirlwind between these two characters but when August sees the situation Levi is currently facing, his prior experiences and protective instinct won’t allow him to sit idly by. I appreciated the author’s sensitivity to the topics addressed in the book. All of their problems don’t just disappear because they have fallen for one another but they have each other for support to work through the tough times.

This book centers around a gym where the meet cute between our two MC's August and Levi happens. Both characters go through some issues including assault, domestic violence, parental pressure etc. I love that while August is a strong person and wants to be there for Levi, he has his own issues and is realistic about relationship expectations. He helps Levi, but let's him save himself. Levi is a strong character that may get beat down, but doesn't break. There was also a lot of emotional growth on Levi's part, regarding his situation. The only issue I have with this book is the length. Everything happens realistically, but very quickly. I just wish readers would have more characterization for the MC's. Readers don't get to know Levi or August past their current situations and physical looks. Overall, a quick but entertaining read that has you rooting strength, love and overcoming your fears.

Ohhh this was so good! It’s such a heartbreaking book. But I’m so happy everything turned out for the best!

August works at the Knockout Gym teaching self defense classes! When a man comes in looking beaten and lost he feels the need to help and protect him.

Levi is not safe at home. One day when he needs to get out of his home he finds his way the Knock out gym.

I’m not sure, once again, how to feel about this story. It was okay but the characters just didn’t connect with me, so that’s all I’ve got to say.

This is a romance between a young self defence teacher struggling to make it on his own (August, 23yo) and a younger guy who has a drunk and abusive father and a mother he doesn’t want to abandon (Levi, 19yo).

Due to the heaviness of the subject matter and the short length of the novella, we don’t get much depth but I enjoyed Levi’s character arc and August’s unending support. I would’ve liked to have seen more of a relationship develop as is it’s pretty instalove-y but again with the short format there’s only so much space. I’m 100% satisfied with the ending and loved the epilogue. This can be read in an afternoon so if you’re looking for a quick read that’ll tug on your heartstrings with low steam, check this one out!

Fighting for Freedom is part of the Fighting for Love collab collection. Book 7 in this collaboration. There are 8 books in total, by 8 different authors. You don't have to read them all in order to enjoy Fighting for Freedom, but after reading this one, I need to read all of them. I am hooked.

I need more of these two men. Their whirlwind relationship was the sweetest thing.

Levi was a broken boy looking to get away from the pain inflicted on him by his father. The day he stumbled into the Gym and into August his whole outlook on life changed.

August sees Levi as someone special, and he is instantly drawn to him, wanting to see what would come out of a relationship with him. He refuses to give up on him, giving Levi everything he deserves and more.

I loved watching their relationship bloom into something beautiful, allowing Levi to get everything he deserves and more. Seeing them be the home that the other desperately need is beautiful.

This was a quick read. I devoured it in less than 24 hours. If you want spice, and a sweet love story then pick this one up and thank me later. I need more of this couple, and I can only hope Joelle writes more to their story.

    what you will get:
    * Hurt/comfort
    *sweet love story
    *first time feels
    *protective MC
*broken boys finding a home in each other
    *dual POV
    *M/M love

I still remain shocked that parents can abuse their children when it is the normal reaction to protect and safeguard your offspring.
Levi was abused not only physically, but also sent out to work from an early age to bring an income to his father. Employment he would lose because of beatings. One day he came across a gym hoping to get respite from the weather and caught the attention of August who gave the self-defense training.

It still took some time before they could find a solution to their problems and circumstances. All the while holding my heart in their hands and my soul fighting for relief. There wasn't much info or storyline surrounding Nelly, perhaps she is a character in one of the other book in this series.
Joelle brings out all the feelings of protection, comfort and security.
I received a copy and it is my pleasure to leave my honest and voluntary review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Levi and August

I had a chance to help Levi and August's story become the beautiful story their novella is. At its heart, Fighting for Freedom is the story of learning to fight for yourself, fight for your future, and fight for your life.

After spending years being physically harmed by his father, Levi has reached the end of his rope. He is timid, a shell of his former self, and afraid to come out and live his truth. The fear is ingrained in his soul. Until he meets August, whose protective soul calls out to Levi's broken & bruised spirit.

August teaches others to stand up for themselves. His class is slow-to-build, thanks to a useless coworker, but August perseveres. After watching his friend recover from an attack that they couldn't defend themself against, August has made it his life's mission to make sure nobody else suffers the same painful journey. When August meets Levi, his soul calling out to August's for help, he knows that he's met the one person who will push his boundaries at work and open his heart to love.

Fighting For Freedom by Joelle Lynne

I saw this book advertised in a book group and I was so intrigued by it,  I downloaded it to my TBR.  This author is new to me.

First off, the story wasn't quite what I thought it was.  However,  it was still an angsty and gritty emotional read.

Poor Levi has been abused by his alcoholic father for years.  Whilst fleeing the house one day, he stumbled across a gym, with a rainbow flag in an unfamiliar area, and went in to ask for directions how to get home.

August had just finished teaching a self defence class when he saw Levi.
Levi was so skittish and jumpy he felt compelled to help him, he had a stuttering desire to protect him,  but Levi bolted before he got a chance.

I enjoyed this insta love novella,  I really felt for Levi, but I wish for more details and justice or retribution.

The beginning of this is awfully painful to read as we learn of Levi's miserable life with his drunken, bullying, abusive father. Too many bruises and broken bones has taught him that fighting back is useless. This story, both stark and sweet, is a tough but lovely tale as Levi searches for an answer, a chance at a better life.

What a great book. Levi and August are so perfect together ❤️

Levi is so strong, and I love that he found the courage to leave his toxic home life and find security and acceptance with August. I loved how Levi felt so comfortable with August and how August just wanted to take care of him.

August is the perfect protective man, and I really liked him.

I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series and seeing more couples find love in Knockout gym
