- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2023I haven't finished reading the book "How I made 52 films in 3 years" but I had to stop reading to share my thoughts about this fantastic book immediately. I love this book, it is very educational for someone who wants to create their own films. When you read about film making, you want to know how to get investors in your films, or what equipment filmmakers use, or you simply want to know their journey, that can be inspiring for those like me who are looking into creating films. Blake Ridder captures that in his book. In fact more than that, this has become my new guide (tool box) to create my own films and I totally recommend anyone who is interested in film making or even in the industry to check this book out. I normally do not write reviews but this book blew my mind and it is worth of your time. Too good not to be share with the world.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2023I got some really great ideas from this book, and some great tips too. It was easy to read, read it over the weekend. I highly recommend anyone working with a camera read this book, and take notes.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2023Pros:
-I love hearing about anyone's creative journey and this is a great story.
-As someone new to "filmmaking" but not new to "video production" I still enjoyed his little tidbits of information, suggestions, and stories that resonated with me.
-The book is short enough to be easily digestible, but long enough to feel substantial (More about this in the 'cons").
-The chapters are broken up in such a way that it is a pleasure to read.
Cons:
-The author's second language is English, which is amazing and impressive. However, he seems to toss so many English colloquialisms and phrases that seem very out of place, especially when they get overused.
-The writing feels like he was given the assignment to write a paper a certain number of words long but his content was only half that. So he repeated things, only rephrasing them. In other words, this book could have been half its length.
-The cover is AI art, which, ok, fine. The author isn't a writer or an artist, and he just wanted to get his content out there and speed through all the other stuff. I get it, it's what you do when you self-publish. But given the fact that he is "creative" and he chose the least creative way to come up with a book-cover just left a bad taste in my mouth.
- I lost respect for this writer after I read two things in the book he admitted to. One; He said to get your name and work out there, you need a big social media following. So, he bought fake followers on instagram... Then he admitted to being hired for a film as the DP (I think) but he quit the gig in the middle of filming because he had an idea for a movie and he wanted to start right away. Bro, finish the work you committed to. That's not cool.
-I realize the title is "How I made 52 films in 3 years" but it really didn;t feel like a "how to book"
- I'll sum up his advice for getting the money you need for a film; find a rich friend and keep asking them for money. Literally, that's what he did.
Overall, I'm not going to say "Don't buy this book". But I really can't say it's going to help or encourage you to make 52 films in 3 years. If nothing else, it's an interesting "biographical journey". I would have been more interested in the book if that's all it was; A non-English speaking person moves to the UK and how he ended up making 52 films despite obstacles.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2023This is a poorly written book by an amateur for amateurs. If your goal is to become a content creator influencer, this is for you. If you want to become an actual filmmaker, there are better resources.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fellow indie Filmmaker’s Reflection: Resonating with Blake’s Journey
Sure! Here's the revised version with your signature included:
Having been in filmmaking for almost 15 years, I found Blake’s book deeply resonant. Despite being worlds apart, the experiences and insights he shares reminded me of my own journey. The book is well-written, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. As I work on my debut feature film and reflect on my path through over 150 short films, Blake’s experiences hit close to home. I highly recommend this book to anyone aspiring to step into the beautiful world of cinema.

5.0 out of 5 stars A no nonsense guide to low budget filmmaking 🎬
Highly recommended if you're an inspiring filmmaker or just have an interest in the craft. It's clear and straight to the point with no faff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Count the films in years not the years in Films.
I loved the open and honest style of Blake's book as he guides us through his early experiences from his corporate job in Marketing then into acting before he's finds his 'home' and passion as a film maker. Its right to say don't judge someones experience in years but more what they have achieved in those years and this is where Blake has earned his stripes as a rapidly establishing leading film maker in the budget indie space. Im only half way through but the insights are invaluable as anyone in the creative industry knows you have to celebrate every win however small to balance the relentless 'no's' that we all experience. I wold recommend this book to student and those in the early days of their film making journey but also to actors who want to gain insights as to the other side of the camera and how they can be a more giving partner in the overall film making process. A great personal read or a gift to a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book - a must have for any aspiring filmmaker
Mr Ridder's book is a must for any aspiring filmmaker. His portfolio of films is impressive, and his sheer passion and work ethic shines through in these pages. Written in a highly engaging way, Mr Ridder's personal insights are both compelling and informative, and - as a fledgling filmmaker - I could relate to a lot of the experiences he discusses. I found this book to be extremely inspiring, and it has both taught me - and prepared me! - for a great deal when it comes to pursuing my own career in filmmaking.
Five stars. I highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Part instruction manual, part memoir of life behind the camera
I've been a fan of Blake's work since 2018 and it's been wonderful to witness the evolution of his films over the years.
The book is well structured and he takes the reader from the very beginning explaining about the films that inspired him and how he got started. I consumed the whole thing in one evening. I enjoyed reading about his early life and I could relate to his struggles with shyness and getting lost in the worlds of movies. They are magnificent forms of escapism.
There were some sections in the book that didn't particularly grab me as it was about cameras and lighting techniques. As a writer who wants to get into penning screenplays one day, I would have liked to have known more about his writing process.
The book is inspiring, raw and brutally honest about the working life of an indie artist. It ends on a note of hope for all creatives out there - we can achieve our dreams, if we put the work in.
Blake's work is available to watch on YouTube. "Cuttlefish" is my favourite of his short films.
