Finding Finlay (Hawthorne Bluff Book 1) Kindle Edition
Clay’s return to Hawthorne Bluff is a second chance for him. He ran away years ago and his life took a dark turn. When his grandmother, who had always stood by him, suffers a stroke, he comes back to support her and run his family’s bed and breakfast.
But his time in prison changed Clay and he’s not sure the town can forgive him. And then there’s a couple of unsavory characters from Clay’s past that just won’t leave him alone.
Can an ex-con and a banker find romance after all those years? Maybe finding Finlay is exactly why Clay is back in Hawthorne Bluff.

Six years ago, Clayton (Clay) Bradley left Hawthorne Bluff and ended up in Chicago. He ran from Hawthorne Bluff because of Sean Baker who wanted him to help with a robbery, something Clay did not want to do and didn’t know how to get out of. His decision was to run only, he wound up with the wrong crowd again and this time it led to him being behind bars. He served almost three and a half years of his sentence and was released early for good behavior.
Clay lived in a half-way house reported to his parole officer and did everything he could to keep out of trouble, jail was the one place he never intended to revisit. When his grandmother Emma had a stroke, he advised his parole office and headed home to the only person who ever cared for him and would never give up on him. While she is in a nursing home, he is running Bradley House, his grandmother’s B&B. He doesn’t expect to make this move permanent since he has not been welcomed by the town because of his past. Unfortunately, there are so many people who do not believe in second chances or that good people can find themselves doing the wrong thing then pay their debt and want to do better.
It is Finlay Reynolds that comes to Clay offering friendship. Finn always had a crush on Clay but because of their age difference he never acted on his feelings. Finn was six years older, and they were still in school which made that six years seem insurmountable, now it isn’t even an issue. The more time Finlay and Clay spend together the more they begin to care for each other and more than just as friends.
Clay sees a future in Hawthorne Bluff and a desire to bring in more business to the B&B and to hopefully realize a future with the man he is beginning to love. Just when things are finally going in an upward direction for Clay a voice from the past threatens to destroy everything. Sean Baker hasn’t forgotten Clay and plans on bringing him down. Sean’s threats could bring an end to the future Clay hoped for.
A beautiful story about a man who did the wrong thing and wants to make amends. I know that it is hard to overcome past mistakes when people will not give you a chance and in Clay’s case hopefully, he has the right people behind him.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2024The is was a sweet contemporary MM story. His childhood crush comes home so Finlay decides to shoot his shot. I love second chance stories
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2023Finding Finlay is such a great read. Finlay never acted on his chance at telling Clayton that he had a thing for him, but when Clay returns it's all Finlay can think about. With certain other obstacles in the way, its a rejoice when the two finally make it together. Such a lovely story.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2023I'm rounding this up from 3.5. This is a sweet story and definitely is a slow burn. It's not a bad story.
I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2023Age gap is one of my favorite romance tropes. Banker Finlay (Finn) Reynolds gets a second chance to initiate a romance with Clayton (Clay) Bradley. Finn's the elder of the two, and that feeling of robbing the cradle when they were both in school stopped him from acting on the crush he harbored for Clay.
Returning home to Hawthorne Bluff is both a risk and joy for Clay. He's happy to reunite with the only family member who returns his love: his grandmother. She's suffered a stroke, and Clay arrives on home turf to help save Gran's B&B. The risk? He's an ex-con. Many people in Hawthorne Bluff aren't ready to trust, forgive or forget.
The author has crafted a sweet, gentle tale of two men cautiously navigating the path to romance. Finn proves he has the heart to trust, forgive and love Clay.
For those times when you need a comfortable, easy read with sufficient heat and minor angst. Just be prepared for your stomach to growl over the delicious meals Finn and Clay indulge in. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2023This was a second chance story of sorts. Not the usual that I like where the couple had something and it didn't work out the first time for whatever reason and now they have a shot. This is the other kind I like where one of them sees the opportunity to seize the day in a way they had not before. Finlay sees Clay's return to town as an opportunity to befriend Clayton after a run of bad fortune for Clayton both before he fled town and when he left. He fled town to get away from a bad crowd, wound up in one anyway and did town. Now that they are older and Clay is out back and looking to settle in the town they grew up in and have a good life, his past comes to call. They have some obstacles to get past but in the end they are able to wind up together. I liked this story and both men sticking it out to get to where they wanted to be.
I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2023This is the first book I've read by this author and it was okay. I enjoyed the storyline and characters but the writing was a little hard to get into. It's one that I finished but I don't know if it's one I would read again. I will be checking out the next book in the series just to give it a chance.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2023This is a new to me author. I really enjoyed the storyline. We have a second chance. And kind of friends to lovers. We have a character who was trying to rebuild his life after a stent in prison. We have a happy ending. It's a sweet read if you need a sweet story.
