About the author

Karen Aldous enjoys village life on the edge of the north-downs in Kent with easy access to the buzz of London. Not only does she love the passive pleasures of reading and writing, she also craves the more active pursuits with her family and friends such as walking, cycling and skiing especially when they involve food and wine!
Much of Karen's inspiration comes from her travels and meeting people. The UK, France, Greece, Switzerland, Italy and parts of the USA and Asia are just some you will experience in her books to date. However, wherever she goes, new characters emerge in 'Karen's World' screaming at her to tell their stories; past or present. She loves to write about strong independent women who can direct their own lives - but struggle to control them! And, of course there's always a gorgeous hunk or two!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2019Loved the book. Being part of a group of five life long friends who come together to help one who has the 1st anniversary of the death of her husband death from cancer. They plan a ski trip. Each looking at their life and marriages. Sometimes life is not what it seems to be. A very good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2019The five ladies in this story are all around sixty years old and have been friends for years. However, family commitments, distance and secrets have kept them from all meeting up until they agree to go on holiday for the New Year . . . . and not just any holiday – four of them are going skiing for the first time ever, travelling to beautiful La Tzoumaz, Switzerland to do so, under the guidance of the one remaining member of the quintet who regularly goes skiing! One of the main purposes of this holiday is to help reconnect with Ginny, who has been particularly reticent to share how she is since the untimely death of her husband during the festive season last year and her being made redundant shortly thereafter. Ginny is the obvious one needing support but, as the story progresses, they discover that they all have their own secrets and that life isn’t always as rosey as it may appear for any of them!
This is a heartwarming story of friendship, learning to face your fears and discovering that a trouble shared may well be a trouble halved! Told mainly from the points of view of three of the ladies, it explores relationships, expectations, temptation and love in a laugh out loud adventure on the Nursery slopes with some unexpected twists though not necessarily of the injury kind. The ladies explore the après-ski options and discover more about themselves and each other in this delightful festive read. It is such a lovely change to have more mature main characters and this story shows that age is not a barrier to making changes in your life, facing new adventures and having fun.
I requested and was given a copy of this book, via NetGalley. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2018I would definitely call this Womens Fiction. It is about a group of women of a mature age.
All are going through changes in their lives, being widowed or having husbands in various stages of career change.
It has been a year since Ginny's husband died. Near the end, when he did not know what he was saying, he apologized. For what, Ginny is unsure. Now he is gone, will she ever know?
Before he became too ill, he had wanted to go skiing with his wife. Now, she is going with her friends, and will have a brief memorial for him.
Only one member of the group is a skier. She arranges the plans, but she seems to have an ulterior motive herself. Another of the women does not live in the UK, as do the others. Her kids are grown and she misses her friends and wants to move back. She also knows something about Ginny's husband*s secret. Even those who talk frequently don*t know everything that each of the others deals with regularly.
As happens when women take trips, there will be some flirting with men they meet.
This is a book about discovering a new path and rediscovering oneself that has gotten pushed aside while dealing with life*s daily requirements and compromises. Secrets will be revealed and friendships are tested.
This is a book you*ll want to take your time to absorb as you get to know the ladies.
I read this book via a Netgalley copy
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2018This was just not for me. Seems to need a lot of editing to make it readable. The characters were wooden and strange.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2018I really enjoyed the setting for this one and I love the cover too!
The book was well written and I thoroughly enjoyed the story and getting to know the different characters and I loved that the focus of the book was older women and not those in their 20s and 30s which seem to be so common in this genre of books at the moment - it was a really lovely change!
For me this was a lovely book to curl up on the settee with a blanket and a warm drink! A really enjoyable story - 4 stars from me for this one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a group of people I would like to call my friends
I thought this book about a friendship would be perfect for me as it's set in the Alps (although I am not a skier), but it wasn't as I expected.
The start was rather laborious as the author set the scene with lengthy descriptions of each character's life and their connections to each other. The way this was written suggested that there was a prequel, with lots of references to events of the past which continued to appear throughout the book, but I looked in vain to find one. There were many missing words, spelling mistakes and inappropriate sentence structure which should have been corrected by now as I see other reviewers have made similar statements. There were also times when the narrative didn't seem to make sense such as when a character silenced her alarm clock when woken by it, but then tried to avoid waking her friends whilst dressing - hadn't the alarm woken them? I couldn't understand why the main character was in so much financial difficulty following the death of her husband, surely they had good life insurance as he'd had his own business, and we are told she'd worked at her well-paid job for many years so the redundancy payment should have been good. The conversations were sometimes strange, did we really need 2 pages of discussion about Sindy, Barbie, Tressy, Penny and Ken?!
The focus of the book was supposed to be the friendship, but I found it unbelievable that people who are supposed to be such good friends would keep secrets from each other, and constantly call each other 'darling', 'beautiful people' and 'gorgeous girls' The amount of wine they managed to consume made me worry about their livers, but then according to the author I am, like Rob, only 'a humble nurse'.
This was a boring book about a group of self-centred drunkards and I wished I hadn't persevered in reading to the end.

1.0 out of 5 stars dull
I love skiing, but even that wasn't enough to make me like this book. It was just dull and not very well written. Lots of typos and grammatical mistakes as well.
